DirectShow abandoned?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/DirectShow abandoned?

Got the update message of 3Impact, but that's not the major concern.

This info is more confusing
"DirectShow interface has been removed from latest version of DirectX as it is no longer suitable for game development"

Does it mean we shouldn't use DShow from now on, or all new user with Newest DX installed will have problem play old games used DShow?

Thats weird.. there should be some kind of legacy support?

I have read in CPU Magazine that the next generation of DX will have no legacy support... I don't see how that could be... Billy Boy would be shooting himself in both feet.

I suppose then that you would have to have BOTH versions installed. Possibly someone develops their own through GNU???

You can definitely have multiple versions of directx installed...

You can definitely have multiple versions of directx installed...

I wouldn't be so sure about that.

Essentially, DirectX's DLLs probably all have the same name, so they'd be overwriting eachother unless the ones you wanted were placed manually in the same directory as the application in question.
(And this would probably have to be done by the end user).

Edit:
Actually, looking in WINDOWS\system32, they actually did DLLs properly for once:
d3dx9d.dll is the name of the DLL, and the others are named properly, too.
I'm surprised!
Not sure about its other components, though, but I suppose they are probably done right.

So, you're right. I'm wrong :P

Microsoft did something right?! Oh no, the world's coming to an end!

I'm all for ditching legacy... Anyone used Maya before.... *shudders*

Legacy will probably be just as supported as OpenGL is in the future - that is, the same as it has always been for OpenGL - software renderer. 'Proper' legacy support will be provided by gfx card manufacturers. I doubt much will change. It just means you can't use DirectShow if you're using DX10 stuff.

So, you're right. I'm wrong :P

We all have to be wrong once in a while... I think. I may be wrong about that.

Makes one wonder -- does killing off direct show also affect video for windows?

Wouldn't put it past microsoft to try to kill off a good chunk of 3rd party video codec compatibility in favor of their own...
