FireFox 1.5.0.3 - Broken?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/FireFox 1.5.0.3 - Broken?
I've been putting off upgrading as I usually like to let other people beta test my programs, but I bit the bullet and updated a week ago. And since then, everything's broken. Typing certain characters ' and , for example sometimes opens the search window instead of typing the characters. right clicking on links occasionally freezes the browser for 20 seconds, it's a pile of crap basically.
Am I missing some updates or something or is this just how crappy Firefox has become? I have automatic updates on, so I don't think I can have missed anything.
I'm seriously considering switching to Opera if this is what's happened to FireFox.
Do what you're supposed to do with Free, Public Software that you say you are beta testing.

Post a bug report, and it's probably also not a bad idea to send one through BugZilla.
I am on 1.5.0.3 and have no problems.
Also, I believe it was a complete release, and just a security fix.
Have you upgraded from 1.0 or something? You give me the impression that it's changed a lot :P
I believe typing ' to open Find is a thing that has been there since day 1... not sure how to deactivate it, but I had trouble there too, once.
Usually, it doesn't open the find window if you're typing in a form, but I have encountered it going crazy in version 1.0, and you may be having the same problem.
Check mozillazine.org, the Mozilla wiki, or Google, and you will probably find the answer.
Your right clicking on links problem sounds like a bug. Does this happen with ANY link?
Doesn't it happen with anything else?
Have you installed any extensions lately? They are likely to cause such a problem.
This reminds me of a bug in Windows XP on slower machines, where right clicking on the desktop it takes forever for the context menu to come up...
Heh, didn't know ' openend the search, I always used / which does the same thing, sure beats hitting ctrl+F.
For me, whenever the browser appears broken, odds are one of my 15 installed extensions is the culprit, which a little shutting them all off to see if they were the prob/activate them one at a time if so fixes.
Opera is quite a nice browser from my experiance, I just couldn't be arsed to learn all its default key-combos when I already but my Firefox browser all nice & customized to my personal likings.
Dear god, what were they thinking...
So, the following open the search, then? :
'
/
ctrl+g
ctrl+f
I guess there's a hotkey for everyone here.
I've broken my browser with extensions many times, too :P
Heh, the only thing Firefox is really missing that Opera has is an actual built-in hot-key configue window.
And man, dont remind me of extensions breaking Firefox, had it happen on one of my most-used extensions, had to manually shut-off Firefox via Task Manager until I figured out what caused the prob.
(which thankfully was updated a week later)
I guess the additional hot-keys are for those multi-lingual keyboards as well that have things like / & ' shifted about making them less accessible then the average US 101-keyboard.

Yes.
Your right clicking on links problem sounds like a bug. Does this happen with ANY link?
It only happens here and there, but as far as I can tell, yes. Image link, text link, anything goes.

No, never needed any.
Anyway, since it's not a general thing, I'll uninstall the whole thing and clean install it.
When such problem happens to my Fox, I keep the bookmarks and uninstall FF completely, then install again.
R you can test on Opera, if such bug exist as well, maybe system issue.
wow..... ... thats lame.
just make sure you are typing in the text boxes... /'/'/'/'/'/'/' no prob... click outside the box and
YARG!!..
hehe.. oh well... i hadn't notice till you pointed it out.
I get the 'freezing' problem too.
I also had problems with installing software from websites - I cannot install Firefox plugins.
I have no difficulties with FF 1.5.3. And yes, it was only meant as fast security fix. Something you won't see with IE!
FF runs stable. The "freezing link" might be a serverside issue.
I have tried Opera, but FF+TB works better for me.
The only cons is the higher memory usage than it was in ff 1.0. But as I have 3 GB or ram, 100 MB more or less aren't an issue anymore.

I have the same thing here. It does that in my webmail when I type HTML mail. I switch HTML mail to TEXT mail to avoid the problem...
Yah, we need hotkey configuration... and we need hotkeys that people aren't always typing.
I guess somebody could... sneak that into the Firefox 2 todo list?
