cool ps3 feature!

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/cool ps3 feature!

You can link 2tv's up to one ps3 and play on seperate screens, no more split screen, how cool is that?

Gee, must use up a lot more GPU time :-)

<sarcastic_swipe_at_sony>

Bet it only works with Sony TVs.

</sarcastic_swipe_at_Sony>

Wonder how many dev's will even support the feature. ;/

It fries Burgers? (George Freeman....)

Cool. Does it wash dishes, too?

Where did you get this information? Because what I thought I heard a couple days ago coming out of Sony's conference was that they'd gotten rid of dual digital TV outputs, and only the more expensive version had a digital output or something.

Reminds me a bit of the original PSX - two could be linked together. How many devlopers/users actually took advantage of that feature?

you only get dual TV in the more expensive version. The cheap version has a bunch of inputs missing, and some features removed but costs $100 less.

At least with the 360 you can easily upgrade to the full blown one if you wish. Seems like a waste of time if you have parts of the system missing in the low cost version. Of course, for sony its not about games anymore. It's about taking over your living room and offering a digital media service to compete with itunes, and HD DVD

Command and conquer red alert was great on the link up. Except when there was too many tanks on screen :S

Bah, they took this idea from Alienware with two or three LCD monitors hooked up to the same CPU tower, that's where PS3's going with this. Nothing new with that feature, knowing that gaming PCs have been doing this for years.

heh, how many people have 2 HDTV TV's in the same room anyway?

not saying its a bad feature, but probably won't take the console gaming world by storm :).

It's a good feature when you come from a generation of playing console games in split screen. Still won't be buying one though for $600!

I was really hyped with PS3 before the conferances.. now - not so much.

Nintendo Wii is on my list of MUST-BUY because it reminds me of the good old games where simple fun is the main focus. I loved the old games with light guns, too bad they didn't make many of them.
With every Wii coming out with this controller, we'll see some very cool consepts coming out.

I agree with Gfk, in general Sony should stop trying to force people to adopt their newly developed (and unwanted) new standards - Memory stick anyone? From a practical point of view all devices that use it have to be long and narrow - just seems illogical.

Their new console? Over-priced. End of story.

the cheaper ps3 appeals to me, because it doesn't cut out any of the fluff i don't need anyway...

If I can ever afford an HD tv... I can afford owning 2 ps3s.

Honestly i haven't seen this many good games for the Wii. The controller seems to be plenty of fun with games like Tennis but other games like Zelda really didn't look like they would need it. The people looked more like some trained monkeys to me and i thought it was more in the way when they were trying to achive certain things with it... :O)

Till now it seemed to me that the best games were presented for the xbox360.

"but other games like Zelda really didn't look like they would need it."

Zelda was originaly designed for the Gamecube, so of course it doesn't need it. They just added some additional features that would enhance it with the controller.

There will be games which you can hack and slash and use the nunchuck as a shield, but Zelda is not one of them. It wasn't designed around the controller, and is a third person game. Where the controller will really shine most is first person games.

Yes but also when watching games like Red Steel then the only scene which was obvious that it's fun was the sword fighting. Shooting, opening doors etc didn't really look like it would be easier or more fun to play. I also think that after some time there will be games which make heavy use of it but i also don't see it working for all type of games and secondly also for those were it works i'm sure you'll feel your arms and muscles much earlier then when just lying your hands on the table or holding an oridnary controller in your fold.

Beware of your new Popeye muscles! ;O)

Um, it's not like Alienware has a patent on multiple monitors. Seriously though, Alienware? I'm sure there are people using Alienware computers who have multiple monitors, but the same is true of, oh, pretty much every computer brand in existence.

i'm sure you'll feel your arms and muscles much earlier than when just lying you hands on the table or holding an oridnary controller in your fold.

It'll probably make you more tired, but it's probably also a lot healthier. And I don't mean in terms of the exercise; using a control pad for long periods of time is not good for your hands. Kingdom Hearts destroyed my thumb.

In which way got your thumb destroyed?

Personally i do play 90% with mouse and keyboard and had no problems so far. Don't get me wrong i like the controller but when i wanna move then honestly i prefer doing real sport instead of sweating in front of a screen in a room.

What they really should be doing by now is allowing two or more PS3's to be hooked up to share CPU power, which I thought was the whole point of the Cell processor's design - that everything sort of scales up into a grid computer at the hardware level.

Rubber/platic thumb-sticks hurt more over time then clicking your finger-tips on a keyboard/mouse.
(I remember getting my thumb blistered playing GoldenEye007 on the N64 for who knows how long.....ah those were the days)

Regarding physical movement, if you ask me, I believe that'll just add another layer of challenge to multiplayer games, pick out all the fat people in the audience and yer guaranteed a win. ;)

moved...

IPete2.

If it was cool, it wouldn't cost $500-600 :P

I prefer to just big up and play the games on the consoles that are available right now and the games that I can play NOW! Next gen stuff is ok, but you know, you're missing out on the present day fun to be had.

Has anyone else noticed how "next-gen", so far is still all about surface detail?

It all looks completely fake in action, and the only thing that looks better than today's graphics is the more dynamic lighting, pretty hair, and heavier use of refraction/bump map effects.

What about real time animations and all that fun stuff?
There's a demo for Easy-Tok which demonstrates ragdolls doing some pretty fancy animation including picking themselves up from any position... and that's probably done on a pretty small budget :P

In my opinion, you can't call it "the next generation" unless there is something NEW going on (a new cycle), as opposed to something just being further enhanced (an aging population).

I couldn't care less about the detail seen in a screenshot of a game if, in action, the entire thing ran seemlessly and didn't feel totally pre-arranged.
Sound, animations, and AI all suffer from this... and it still happens in all of this next-gen stuff. (With the exception of Spore in the animations department... but since it seems excluded from the "next-gen" obsession, it doesn't count).

It can't be that hard, with these enormous budgets that some developers have, to have the game actually modify tone of voice to suit the situation a character is in so that "cover me" is said loudly and perhaps more quickly/briskly when somebody is being shot at. In fact, the whole sound department is lacking. There are only a select few games which properly alter the sound that an object makes when it hits the ground based on how it made contact... and has anyone else noticed that almost everything in Oblivion sounds like a brick?
I'm sure we've all bumped into points in games where characters yell the same thing every single time, and it's ridiculously annoying. They seem to fix this - and the issues with AI being completely scripted - by making it harder to die so you never notice.

Oh, and it would be nice if they stopped calling guys with big assault rifles who run around shooting things "recons"... and if these so-called "recons" did not yell out "Recon!!!" every five minutes.

Err... back to the topic.
Yah, that's a nice feature... but who's going to have 2 TVs in one room for the sake of multiplayer on their PS3?

Besides, my computer has done dual screen stuff for ages.

I thought they were pimping the concept of hooking up multiple PS3s as one of the system's features? Have they removed it?
It seems like a pretty dumb feature to me, though... These things aren't going to be used to do big 3d renders (I'm NOT talking about the real-time stuff in games), and I really hope that they don't start putting stuff like "this game requires 2 PS3s to run" on various "extra-next-gen" games.
Still, I guess someone would have found a use for it... and it could potentially be kind of cool to see.

>Yah, that's a nice feature... but who's going to have 2 TVs in one room for the sake of multiplayer on their PS3?

Are you kidding? I work with guys that will run out and buy an additional 61" tv JUST for this feature!

Maybe, but they're in a MASSIVE minority.

And you can probably still buy 2 wii for less then the price of the PS3, and they can wirelessly play a single copy of a game.

If the controller for the wii really works then I may just be switching over to console gaming in the future - but there is also an excellent crop of PC games coming.

Will this crop include whatever we're all working on?

...Doesn't look like it ;)

A much better PS3 feature.

Other than game studios tied to official developer licenses, we'd like to see various individuals participate in content creation for the PS3."
