Anyone had this problem with an LCD Screen before

I've had my notebook since June/July 2005, with no problems until now.

In the last few days while using it on some occasions the laptop screen has had bright blue/white bandings - as if someone is 'bloom filtering' the screen so that sections of the screen are smudged and bright - impossible to see what is behind it. I can usually see the top 100-200 rows of pixels reasonably fine, but the rest is garbage.

Difficult to tell as well is that the PC becomes less responsive, although that is hard to discern when you can't see what is going on on the screen.

Fortunately it is still under warranty (2 year warranty), and the repair centre is not far from here.

The problem went away the moment I closed the screen and re opened it, which is odd.

Also the environment it has been in has changed in the last few weeks: Moved into a new house in which I use the laptop on a small table in the centre of the living room - with a gas heater on the opposite side of the room. Being almost Winter here the heater is on fairly regularly. I am wondering if perhaps the heat could be affecting it, although the back of the screen doesn't feel warmer than usual to the touch.

Any thoughts....

it's possible a loose connection to the motherboard, or a faulty cable. Or the screen is dying and needs replaced.

My sister's LCD screen has the same problem, I tried everything to fix it with no luck (driver reloads, checking the cables, changing display modes, etc...)

It might just be the monitor is going bad.

I had this problem after I used my Toshiba Satellite to rebound a Boot and a Rubber Egg. College was great, We threw the rubber egg at each other (the thing was *not* soft) and my mate Ben got pissed and chucked the boot.

I raised my laptop to rebound both the Egg and the boot.

Poor old lappy....

I just bought a new LCD monitor, looks like they are expected to last about 3 years with 8-10 hours daily use. Maybe it's just getting old?

If that is how long they are expected to last then perhaps I've overused mine. Outside of work I think very few hours go by that the laptop is switched off - and I turn off screensavers/powersaving features by default. So you are probably right it has 'aged' - although I would have hoped that heavy use for less than a year would not be too much to expect from the screen.

heh, your right matty, for some reason I thought your notebook was older. 1 year isn't a long time, I don't suppose its still covered by a warranty?

On another note, 3 years? I'd not buy one if that was the life expectancy. My old flat screen was 2nd hand when I bought it in 2002 and it works fine to this day, it's just smaller than my 19" :)

Take it back right away if it's still under warranty. Computers are fickle things, if it's done it once, it's likely to do it again. Take it back, at least you'll be able to get a newer model/repairs done for free. :)

It's still covered by warranty and I am taking it to the repair centre tomorrow hopefully. (Warranty is 2 years - still got until June 2007 before it runs out)

EDIT - It is fixed - simply a cable had worn out in the laptop screen hinge, supposedly the commonest fault with this model and easily fixed.
