Cannot stop playing...

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Cannot stop playing...

The game I'm currently making, honest, the engine is nearly there, but the more I make it, the more time I just spend playing! :)

My girlfriend is currently nailed to it too, and she doesnt even like playing computer games! :D So that's a good sign lol.

It's a 2D puzzle affair I started after playing the online demo of Grey's Easter Bonus, though the game play is completely different!

Great game Grey by the way ;)

I think I can really make a jobbie of this game, but my GFX are a tadge lacking, and I havent got a clue what style to use, but then, I can sort that when I finish the engine!

Me having fun! WAHEY

Anyway, anyone else had this nice problem? :D lol

Yeah - the same thing happened to me when I was working on BattleTanks II. I probably wasted a lot of time playing it, when I should have continued working on it :)

I think this is one of the best things about game programming - it's not only fun to make the game, but it's fun to play it, too.

I know that feeling .. With my Verlet Physics thingy I've spend around half the development time playing it :)

Exactly ... I wouldn't waste my time creating something I would never play ..... unless someone was paying me lots of money of course ;)

It's not playing your testing! It sounds better that way

The game I am working on too, hard to stop playing it :)
Nice rewarding feeling.

that just means that your game is good... if it weren't, you would be playing something else...

:)

cool. I enjoyed playing my game too. But after designing and testing 110 levels I was pretty wiped out.

Hey do you need a decent game framework to go with your game? Get in in place now so you don't have to rewrite too much later on!

Well, that's what I feel about my Plasmatic Organization game, "Plasmorg" for short. Even tho it's supposed to combine elements from Tetris and Space Invaders into one fun platformer/shooter combo, it seems like I may port it to console (GBA SP to be more specific), if I get addicted enough. May as well outsource my project to Nintendo and have them publish it, if I can't do much on my own, but it is worth playing, I can rest assure you. I feel that there are other games worth playing, just like your games, Grey. There should be some games more like yours on the market.

lol, there are tons of games like mine on the market. It's making them different that's the hard bit.

I dunno what it is, but I just can't stop pringling.

Yeah, I've been making a little game in Blitzmax for about two weeks now.

I'm really really bad for getting people to come and look at my game, even though I know they couldn't really give a toss about it... but with this one they're actually wanting to have a go and I'm having to fight to get my PC back.

Its bad... but in a good way... or something.

I agree with Agamer ;c)

I get stuck playing my own stuff too. But then I mainly make games that I like to play and hope others will too.

As an example, today I added birds flying around in my golf game and I have sat here for at least two hours watching them fly around while tweaking them.

golf game? what's this? hmmmmmm?

I'm a functionist, everything I make usually ends up in a function, before I dabble with C++ and WinAPI userlibs, I made a lot of stuff with Blitz, I'm eventually going to invest in BlitzMax and spent a little time rewriting them, just as practice, we're never to old to learn! :)

Anyway, I'm not working on the game tonight, because I'm knackered with work, though no doubt, the g/f will be playing on it later... just for testing purpose's! ;) hehehe

I am working on my first project (after a year and a half of messing around with blitz) and i spend more time "testing it" then actually working on it. Of course i may just be easily amused

stevie G, i had to force myself to stop playing your physics engine its so much fun, yet theirs no point to it.

Yeah, after studying some old NES, SNES, and GBA games, as well as Sega's Sonic series, I thought about how to revitalize the Plasmorg project, if I want something that'll have that "old school addiction" feel to it. After all, there are some old games from years past that still have that good feel to them, and keeps you wanting to play more for some strange reason. However, to duplicate that feeling will require head-splitting thought to it. I like fast-scrolling speed, high scoring action, and always wanting that surge of energy while trying to make it to the end of a stage/level. Sonic the Hedgehog series really did me in, as well as some Mario games (even tho he wasn't exactly fast like Sonic, but he was addictive in his own way, too). However, Plasmorg plays more like Asteroids and/or Space Invaders, even tho it's based on playing on an alien planet surface. So, having that speed surge feel, yet having a fun factor is going to be a challenge... Shooting down space blocks before they crash into you, that'll be something to think about. Whew, better hope Nintendo'll take to this for being a game for the GBA or DS market, maybe even on their new Wii, for all we know! It should play more like a console game than a PC game, IMHO.

*shhh* *whispers* "its being written in a competing language" ;c)

lol, seems a lot of us have been there and done that. Yah I remember even back in the day, working on something and just sitting back and oogling at it running, spenging a whole load of time doing that rather than actually continuing to develop it. Mesmerizing! I think I even once set up a small game to automatically run itself (I switched off air resistance so the ship automatically kept moving), and then just sat and watched it. :-)

yup... i'm trapped now diving and racing the sub around...

still adding effects and tweaking code for the external views of the sub and ocean, but i just can't stop playing around with it...
