1) Have you ever bought a phone game?
No, but I don't have a cell phone.

What Kuron said.

What Kuron and Noel said.

what Kuron and Noel and Gabe said...

if i really felt like microwaving my brain tissue, i'd stick my head in a microwave and get it done right...

besides... there was a time, wayyyyy back in the dark ages, when people used phones to talk on...
nowadays, you play video games on em, take pictures with em... aahhhh, i guess it makes sense, in a nonsensical sorta way... i mean, there's usually noone to talk to on the other end anyways... you wind up leaving a text message for the person you're calling anyways, or end up talking to his/her machine...

... so why not play a game.

what a strange world this place has become...

--Mike

Yes, I've bought Doom RPG (which is great for a phone game), Call of Duty 2 (though I shouldn't have), some 3D golf game, and Metal Slug. They all use Java.

what everyone else said but especially red. even if i had a phone, i wouldnt waste money on a stupid game. buy the stupid game for pc, i shall

[edit] ooh, metalslug what a fun game

1) Have you ever bought a phone game?

Yes. Three.

2) What was it?

Gradius, Arkanoid, and one other I can't remember right now.

3) Was it java or c++?

No idea.

4) How did you purchase it? Credit card or SMS?

SMS.

5) Was it any good? Would you do it again?

I bought them all one right after the other one night while waiting for an hour to get dinner at a restaraunt. Why did I buy three? Because the first one I bought wasn't any fun, and I thought some of them must be fun because people buy the things.

6) 2D or 3D?

Are you kidding? :-) I haven't heard of any 3D games for cellhpones, but considering how slow and choppy the screen updates were on my relatively new cellphone, the idea of making one in 3D is crazy.

Anyway, the games I bougth weren't any fun because of the slow update and the poor ability to control them with the recessed and tiny keys. I won't be buying another one until I see some phones that can actually run them decently, or I get bored and have some money to burn, and if that happens I'll be sticking to puzzle games rather than action games. :-)

There are quite a few so so 3D games. The biggest problem with the cell phones is the slow input. You can only press one button at a time. Doom RPG really is the best cell phone game for that reason. It's basically a slower version of Doom but they added a lot of little bits of character to it.

1) Have you ever bought a phone game?

Yep.
2) What was it?

Ancient Empires - one of the best mobile games ever.
3) Was it java or c++?

Java

4) How did you purchase it? Credit card or SMS?

SMS, through the WAP site.

5) Was it any good? Would you do it again?

Hell yeah it was good. But no, I wouldnt do it again because I know where to "aquire" them....

6) 2D or 3D?

It was 2D, but if you want to see some serious awesome 3D, you should check out the N-Gage stuff.

1) Have you ever bought a phone game?

Yes, loads

2) What was it?

Bejeweled, Collapse
FruitMachine,Sudoku ...

3) Was it java or c++?

Not sure

4) How did you purchase it? Credit card or SMS?

Credit Card

5) Was it any good? Would you do it again?

Excellent

6) 2D or 3D?

2d

I never buy platform or shooters on the mobile. Most mobiles only allow one key to be pressed at a time. Ideal for puzzle games though.

What Kuron and Noel and Gabe and Red October said...

Don't have a cellphone... But even if I did, the only feature I would be interested in would be making & receiving phone calls.

Games, internet access, camera's, etc -- all pretty pointless to me.

Yes I've bought 5 games via sms. Most were daft, but ancient empires is very good.

I developed a game in java and J2ME called sam boulder, it has been downloaded 6880 times at this site

http://www.getjar.com/products/2950/SamBoulder

My website is http://www.gameidle.com

The problem you have developing for cell phones is making sure that your game is able to run on all the different phones that are available.

Commercially it is a very good market if you have a good game and you can get exposure.

Nope.

I figured Every game i'd seen being played looked awful, so instead of wasting money, I downloaded a bucketload.

There are quite a few 3D games. 3D pool kicked ass, so i bought it. Not sure what the programmer gets from this deal!

To this day, that's the only game I have on my phone.

1. No

No I downlaoded one for free - thanks goodness, Prince of Persia - what a load of ****...

There's a developer near me, they are in Bollington, Cheshire (In the Mill there actually).

www.mforma.com

Formely Mforma now - er Hands On. These guys did call of Duty, Spiderman, X-Men, and a whole load more. Made me think I should be developing games for phones, pda's etc.

IPete2.

Hey, POP wasn't that bad, was like the original, only it scrolled :)

SOT could have been good, and WW was OK, both were small games on Mobile.

Probably doesn't apply, but...

I bought my mobile phone off eBay, and whoever had it before had put Stuntman on it.

It was crap, 2D, and I wouldn't buy a phone game myself. I don't even play Stuntman when I got it free with the phone.

No, but I'm really not a mobile kid. I considered developing games for mobiles about 3-4 years ago, but the Nokia SDK and compiler was crap, you had to keep dropping back to command line to do stuff, which put me off. I'm sure it's loads better now. There was also the limitation that you couldn't press two butons at once, i.e. no diagonal or no shoot+fire or jump+shoot, how lame. Anyway, in the end, I think PC games are more fun to make imho.

ah well lets see:
age of empires (roundbased strategy)
alpha zone 3d (doom-like shooter)
call of duty (isometric shooter)
colin mcrae rally (isometric racing)
darkest fear (horror adventure with really decent graphics)
darts (3d dart game)
empire earth (roundbased strategy)
mafia wars (isometric shooter like gta2)
metalslug brennox (wheee!)
who wants to be a millionaire (you know...that from the tv)
prince of persia (of course!)
sacred (isometric RPG - like diablo)
splinter cell (tactical jump'n'run)
star trek nemesis (ah well...some kind of strategy in space)
strategy war (classic rts)
super real tennis (3d looks great!)
tetris ;)
the fall (round based tactical rpg)
timeline battle (Battleships - multiplayer via bluetooth wheee!)
total overdose (jump'n'run)
townsmen 1-3 (some kind of 'settlers', really neat graphics too!)
worms (you know that, do ya?! ;D)
XIII (jump'n'run)
zuma (same as the pc-version, really addictive!)
3D pool (guess it...)

so yes, my cellphone is some kind of a psp or ngage. its a good timekiller if you're waiting for something (train, bus, etc). plus, i can phone, messaging, go online, listen to mp3 etc with it. the last thing, which is missing some kind of gps/galileo receiver :>

i even wrote some small apps for it. its quite easy nowadays, because there's some kind of a standard through the java-sdk

1) Have you ever bought a phone game?
Yes

2) What was it?
Pirates Fortune, Chess Master, New York City Nights, Prince of Persia

3) Was it java or c++?
Java, all of them.

4) How did you purchase it? Credit card or SMS?
Through the Gameloft web site, payed with credit card.

5) Was it any good? Would you do it again?
New York City Nights and Chess Master were good. PiratesFortun didn't fit my screen. :( I play ChessMaster the most. Turn based phone games work fine, anything that requiers real time playback is bad as it's just too slow (e.g. Prince of Persia).
I might get more turn based games, if I find something cool. Maybe a phone version of Stratego or Backgammon, or a good poker game.

6) 2D or 3D?
All 2D. I think my phone would melt if it tried running 3D. :-P

I have a feeling the US is a bit behind when it comes to Cell/Mobile Phones. The phone companies there didn't have a unified system (maybe still don't) and it was quite expensive as I understand it. In Europe they were practically giving away phones and everyone I know, except my grandparents, in Norway and Iceland has one.

Ragnar

Never bought a phone game, mainly because my old, monochrome phone can't play them :)

I've seen a few games on other peoples' phones but have yet to be even mildy impressed, TBH.

I recently did a version of Juicy Fonts for a phone game company called brainmelt who seem to do quite a few 'adult' themed games. Maybe those kinds of games sell better, I dunno.

Bought Space invaders when I was bored via sms, it's actually good fun when your standing waiting for a bus to kill time, but if I knew I was going to be waiting around for ages I would take a GB or DS with me instead. Phones are still to primative for long periods of game playing IMHO.

I forgot to mention, VNes. It's awesome :)

I can play my fave NES games with my phone.

Now if only the controls weren't so damn hard :)

And;

2) What was it?
3) Was it java or c++?
4) How did you purchase it? Credit card or SMS?
5) Was it any good? Would you do it again?
6) 2D or 3D?

1) Yes
2) 3D Pool
3) Java. (phones don't use C++ for games. yet)
4) SMS
5) Swicked. Not again though. I wiped my phone and lost the game. Didn't fancy paying twice so I downloaded a version.
6) Simple but effective 3D. The balls are sprites though :)

Hey - it's nice to see so many level-headed folk out there who refuse to be sucked into the " you can't live without a mobile phone" lie!

I bought CIV for my sony ericsson, it plays like civ2 :) well chuffed with it. still kicks my ass tho.

Thanks for all your replies (so far). I'll ignore some of the more extreme luddites. :D

I believe there is a difference between european/asian usage and that in the states. Interestingly tho, the phone version of "Driv3r" sold more than a million in the states (as of 2005), so someone must be using cellphones there.

My experience of phone games is mostly on n-gage which is very different to most phones when it comes to games: lots of 3D (non-java, thus fast and smooth) and plenty of cartridge games (making bigger games possible). Generally I would say that n-gage is a much richer gaming experience than 'normal' phones.

I've recently been enjoying a 3D golf game (java) and I bought Zuma (java) to see how it compared to my effort at that genre. I like it but don't think it is anywhere near as polished as the PC version, the sound is particularly absent/limited. And interestingly it plays almost the same as my clone, which is pleasing. Essentially I think it relies on the Zuma license to sell it, much like a lot of mediocre games rely on licences of some kind: films, cartoons etc.

CodeGit - you might be interested to know that your game plays way too fast (partly cos of the key-repeat), and crashes after a minute or so for me (just to demonstrate your last point about different phone platforms :).

Cygnus - there are plenty of c++ games on phones (mostly on Symbian and Windows Mobile). In fact the Symbian version of vNes is c++.

Keep your replies coming.

I've been doing games for the Asian market non-stop for the past 3 years :(
Although I don't sell them - the company who do seem to be keen for me to keep churning them out for them, so I'd say that the game uptake there's probably more buoyant than elsewhere..or at the least for now it holds more promise.

I'll ignore some of the more extreme luddites. :D

then, you'll probably ignore this as well...

Cell Phones and Brain Tumors

Scientists have found the first evidence linking brain cancer with mobile phone use.

It was found that users who spend more than an hour a day talking on a mobile phone have a close to one-third higher risk of developing a rare form of brain tumor. Most frequently, the cancers were found on the side of the head that the user held the phone up to.

The association was found with digital mobile phones, old-style analogue mobile phones and digital enhanced cordless phones.

Although radiation from mobile phones has been shown to alter the brain and affect memory, past studies have found no evidence of a link between brain cancer and mobile phone use.

In the current study, researchers looked at the medical records of 1,600 patients with tumors who had used mobile phones for up to 10 years before diagnosis. They found that the more mobile phones were used, and the more years they were used, the higher the risk of brain tumors.

Further, spending more than an hour on a mobile phone per day increased the risk of acoustic neuroma, a type of tumor, by some 30 percent. This type of tumor, usually curable by surgery, can occur in a nerve in the brain and lead to deafness in one ear.

i don't mean to divert the topic of the thread at all, but since you did mention us 'luddites' in your thread, i thought that you might be interested in opening your realm of thought and possibilities to the suggestion that the god of tech is not always a benevolent one...

before you start worshipping him with all your fervor, stop and think about...

1- asbestos
2- nuclear power

just to mention a few 'scientific wonders' that were rushed into acceptance...

the same lot that will wage a campaign against the ills of smoking, and it's cancer risks, will sit down on a cell phone for hours at end, baking their soft tissue with a product and technology they know lil or nothing about...

now excuse me while i go have a smoke... but no texting or cell phones for me... hey, i may be a luddite, but i aint no dummie :)

--Mike

These cell phone fears are statistical molehills.

http://www.anausa.org/what_is_an.html

"Acoustic neuromas large enough to cause hearing loss and other symptoms occur in about one person in 100,000."

A 30% increase in this rate is: 1.3 cases per 100,000, or a 1 in 76,923 chance.

In contrast:

http://www.livescience.com/forcesofnature/050106_odds_of_dying.html

You are more likely to die in a tornado in your lifetime than developing a noticeable AN this year: 1 in 60,000
You are more than twice as likely to die in a flood: 1 in 30,000

And you are more than 15 times more likely to die by electrocution: 1 in 5,000.

So be careful if you're using your plugged-in cellphone in a flooded area during a tornado. You might develop a largely curable, NON-CANCEROUS tumor.

galaga... java... just went on my phone bill...

So be careful if you're using your plugged-in cellphone in a flooded area during a tornado. You might develop a largely curable, NON-CANCEROUS tumor.

lol

statistical molehills.

so is being killed in a plane crash...

now go tell all that statistical molehill crap to the people who died in plane crashes in the past 12 months... or to their families... i'm sure they'd feel much better knowing it...

ahhhh, why am i wasting my time... no sense preaching to the deaf... enjoy your conversations :) don't worry, be happy...

by the time the general public starts to realize that this is a real issue, they'll probably be able to clone you a new earhole anyways...

probably even be able to replace that part of your brain too... but what the heck... most won't even miss it... they're not using it anyway...

--Mike

Red - I hear you. I take these issues very seriously, and have monitered the situation since mobile phones arrived, not least cos I'm a parent. I think you are mistaken in your summary that assumes that most people aren't aware of the issues here.

Just in case there is more to it than a mild headache, I always use my phone on the headset or loudspeaker. But, I do accept that the risk is overblown, and possibly non-existent.

My second cousin, Candace Williams, was on American Airlines Flight 11 on September 11th, so don't speak for the families, alright?

Her death shouldn't stop people from flying. It's efficient, fast travel. Yes, I'm nervous getting on planes, but her death in an airplane doesn't predict mine.

Cell phones are productive, attractive to the social animal part of humans, and the medical risks of exposure don't warrant the scare tactics.

That statistics table is a bit worrying. One in 36 dies of accidental injury, which does not include car accidents or falling down as that is listed seperately. And the assult by firearm in the US is, 1 in 325, which is INSANE! In my home country, with a population of 300.000, there are on average commited 2, yes TWO, murders a year...and more likely with a knife or in a fight than with a gun. Which means in Iceland, probably has less than 1 in 300.000 deaths from Assult by Firearm.

Also, it seems like infections, food poisoning, complications due to surgery and the like are missing from the list....but maybe they aren't that common.

Anyway...back to mobile games. :-)

Ragnar

1) Yep
2) Gridrunner++
3) Java
4) SMS
5) Yeah, it's great.
6) 2D

Does playing songs via the beeps on the phone count as a game?

@ wmd... sorry to hear about your loss... but you aint the only one who has lost someone to an aircraft accident...

and as far as 9/11 was concerned... i worked right under the towers... across the street from the lil church across from it... and i lost two friends on that day, and one of the people i worked with lost his cousin...

... so don't talk to me about 9/11, you weren't there, you don't work or live near there, you don't know nuthin about the totality off our loss.

plus, i'm a pilot (since the 80's)... and i've been in aviation since i was a kid in the service... and i doubt if you know a single thing about flying either (that you didn't google up or hear from someone who heard it from someone else)... besides, i never suggested that people stop flying... i fly myself...

just as i never suggest that people stop smoking... or using cell phones... the only thing i suggested is that you not take everything that is pushed in your face on the tv as being an absolute necessity of life... or at least give a second for pause and consideration before you run off like the rest of the lemmings of mass consumerism, and shove your cash out just to be able to fondle one of the latest hi tech toys in your lil grubbies... especially when it may be something that you might wind up paying more for than you originally figured...

like Beak mentioned, like a lot of things, a lot of this is overblown as well... surely you must realize that to take such an extreme point of view on either side of the topic is absurd... especially when you don't know squat about what you are talking about...

because if you did, you might think twice about getting aboard that airliner, or think twice about sticking a high frequency microwave generator at the base of your skull...

so lighten up a bit will ya... as the topic was meant to be in the first place, and stop telling people what they should or shouldn't be talking about... and don't throw the dead from 9/11 up as a crutch for whatever your issue is with what i had to say...

noone else took it that seriously...

--Mike

1. No. Oddly I use my telephone for calling people, not playing games on, silly rabbit that's what the GameBoy DS is for. Besides which it has a massive pixel fault blob right in the middle of it, that appears to be growing.

You were the one who equated the statistical molehill of acoustic neuromas with airline crashes, and the effect it has on the surviving family.

It is not my fault that my family was effected like so many others on 9/11, and the fact that I mention it in direct reference to your post is no crutch.

You tried to rally the dead to your cause, not me.

Your hyperbole is amusing, but so disconnected that I have no more interest in it. I'm off.

...and once again another perfectly useful thread is turned to shit by Red. FFS.

Back on topic: My phone does little more than make calls and send SMSs, much like big10p's. That's more than enough for me, so I wouldn't buy a game for it even if it was capable of doing so.

That being said, I have a couple of young nieces (11-14) that have bought a number of games for their mobiles, despite the fact they play no games on either a PC or console.

hey sixes... this is a quote from the guy who started the discussion...

Red - I hear you. I take these issues very seriously, and have monitered the situation since mobile phones arrived, not least cos I'm a parent.

ya see, the guy who started the thread seemed to think it was a lil more than what you call it... enough to give a decent reply...

now go drop off the edge, will ya... you're the one trying to turn something into shit... it's not your fault though, because the world you live in is obviously so full of shit, and it rubs off on you... by default you turn everything you touch into shit... (your word, not mine)...

wmd... you're daft... i equated the similarity in statistics, not in the actual events, as you would see if you weren't so damn stoooooopid :P

and you probably didn't even know your second cousin, twice removed, on your uncle's side... and you probably don't live within a thousand miles of the city... and have never even been inside 1 or 2 world trade...

so don't try and latch your coattails onto this tragedy in any attempts to garner any more sympathy from me...
