Did you see the date on the file? The game is from 2002(!) and it's a typical game one can create with 3D game creator. Nothing really interesting there...

What's funny is you downloaded it, unzipped it, and ran it, all without knowing what it was! Simply amazing!

I love the old 'beat up on DB' chance, cause I hate DB with utter passion (they screwed their customers over, and everyone just brushed it off as "no, they were just kidding"), but seeing someone run something they have no knowledge about (just a link to a zip), is why I really want to go back into the PC tech industry (there is a killing of cash to be made)!

If you feel that way, what are you doing here? All the Blitz updates, etc are in EXE format.

What's amazing about it? It is on the official DB site, it has obviously been prescreened for viri/trojans, they are pretty strict about that before they will host something. It is in the dir of examples with 3d game maker.

Big deal, Download it, virus scan it, even if it is something "bad", this is a net only machine, no internet explorer to mess with, no outlook or any email client to mess with, there is nothing on my system to be lost or messed with, and thanks to ghost, takes mere minutes to restore if there ever were a problem.

I've been online since '80 (CompuServe) and have yet to get a virus, torjan, etc. or lose stuff due to "outside tampering", largely because of all the overprotective measures I take.

Just for your future refference, people do hack into web hosts. People will drop files into a directory for personal use (storage). And I highly doubt DB team will search all files in all directories just to make sure everything is up to snuff (nothing out of the ordinary) every second of every day.... A good linux/unix hacker could find an opening and drop a file in really easily. And if DB does weekly updates to their website, and use some sort of publishing program (IE dreamweaver, etc), they would only see the file during the program sync.

That is why I make sure of what I download and test anything before I run it.

Its a publicly available site, there is nothing "hidden". Grow up a little bit and try and learn about what you are trying to discuss.

Apologies, but its amazing when people flame you for not downloading something unless you know what it is and for virus scanning everything you download.

Knowing better is a great state of mind, it can exist in two people talking to each other without so much as an attempt by either to understand if all of the information they are acting on is complete.

If you want into the support industry, and by wierd twist of fate you wanted to work in my support department, you would have to learn to get all of the information first before attacking a customer or their supplier...

The support you just gave would have been gross misconduct.

I actually worked as an onsite technician for 3 years, before that a corporate networking consultant.

The support I gave was "DONT JUST DOWNLOAD AND RUN SOMETHING WITHOUT KNOWING WHAT IT IS", how hard is that to understand? That is an industry standard, in every business, and repeated to every casual pc user in the world on a daily basis. I can actually name a few people at work (office users) who ran something from their email and gave us a bit of havoc in the support department.

I suggest you guzzle down that morning coffe or soft drink and wake up before attempting to give your opinion of someone else's opinion.

You overlooked the relationship between sender and recipient, and the sender and the file's web host. Reputation and personal history count for more than general guidelines.

I could make a post with nice screenies and all sorts and make the attachment a virus, but I stand on my reputation within the communities i'm in and therefor wouldn't dream of it. xmlspy is somebody who's been on the forums a long time, and i've never knowingly crossed swords or found his posts to be so outrageous (like a virus) that I would make a note to avoid him.

Anyway you're quite right I should have woken up a little first and rephrased what I said, sorry 'bout that, none-the-less my poorly worded post has a point - and as somebody who charges for advise and who has also been a long time member you should know better than to steamroller in to a community thread and say "never do that". *shudder* that's the sort of thing my boss does.

And to make a fine point on it, I wasnt questioning XMLSpy for posting that. Although, a bit more info on 'what' it was would be a bit called for. XMLSpy didnt say he wrote it, nor did he say he ran it, or even say what it was.... He may be the greatest guy in the world, however I only know him as an entity on this forum, and can only hope he does his homework on stuff.

As for the file's webhost, I made my point of that above.

If you say reputation and what not are good enough reason to give up general guidlines, then thats ok, I'll take your word for it ;-) If I fail to hear from you after a few months, I will just assume.....

-No one has broken into any of the houses within 4 blocks of where I live in 6 years, but I still lock my doors when I leave.
-I'm sitting behind a firewalled router, and a domain, but I still have Antivirus software installed not only on my 3 work stations, but the 2 servers as well.

Dark Half-Wit: As usual in your posts, you overlook facts and jump to conclusions. I do indeed know what I was downloading and I am familiar with the author from following the DB community since its inception.

A BSOD is not exactly surprising when you consider this was made with TGC which in turn was made with DarkBasic Classic. Even with the 1.13 upgrade, DBC is still not 100% compatible with XP. AFAIK, 1.13 wasn't used when compiling TGC, so any games produced with it will be buggy. But then it really isn't made for distributing games (which is why xmlspy said: "I don't know if they wanted the public to see that"). The above is all info I knew BEFORE downloading the demo.

FWIW, I have yet to get a BSOD with anything made in DBPro or FPSC.

Beleive it or not some of us actually know what we are doing. I have been programming since '79, been online since '80, I started selling games around '83. I graduated high-school two years early when I was 16 in '85. By '86 (at age 17), I had a full-time suit-and-tie job sitting behind a computer all day crunching FORTRAN code for a major insurance company. At 18, I went to work for GTE as a programmer. I eventually left GTE to go to work for HP. I left HP after my contract was up as I couldn't stand the "anything you code in your spare time, we own" clause. I did contract work for Microprose after leaving HP as well as technical writing for Interact. In the early 90's, I ran a profitable Shareware Distributuion Service with retail space in several chains of stores in MD & PA. I the early-mid 90's, I wrote a simple app that I literally retired off of. (The proceeds of that app put four kids through college and has a trust account for my fifth to go to college when she is old enough.) I also did contract game related programming for many "shareware" companies.

I do know just a teensy weensy bit about what I am doing. I also tend to frown on people who try and play "mind reader".
