"Putt Nutz"

Met these guys at GDC. Very nice Husband and Wife team.

putt nutz looks fun, i might buy it.. *going to download first*

thanks, that's pretty neat. it's a bit much though. lots of bells and whistles.

would it be a good idea to use ODE for a simple-ish miniature golf game or would it be overkill?

Gfk's the man to see about golf games.

If it's no bells and whistles you're looking for you could try this

ya know, that's a good game idea for someone here... a putt putt golf thingee... in Blitz3D... or Max (with one of the 3D wrapper modules)...

it would have broad appeal...

i looked at the site for the puttzputtz thing Dustin pointed us to... and followed the link to get a lil background info... what i found verrrrrry interesting was what they had to say in the interview... at the end...

GS: Do you have any messages for your fellow contestants or fans of the IGF?

A: Keep up the faith and never give up on your dreams. For Black Mountain Games, Putt Nutz was a vision for more than 10 years before opportunity knocked on our door. Once we opened it, we never looked back, never lost focus, and never let anyone try to change our direction or make it into a game that we couldn't be proud of. The vast majority of successful people are able to succeed not because of their ability to avoid failure, but because of their ability to learn from their failures. Plan ahead, don't be afraid to take risks, always focus on your goal, and keep your feet well grounded by being an avid gamer, and you will be well on the way to success.

remember golden tee golf? you had to pull the mouse back in a straight line and then slide it forward to hit the ball. very realistic and very cool.

a 3D FPS-type putt putt golf game would be awesome if done right. imho it needs to be clean, simple and eye catching with good sound effects and music.

i can do the music, sfx and voice acting.

Wow, this is great!!

i was also thinking it'd be nice to include a course/hole editor and maybe multiplayer modes.

Hmm... never done a crazy golf one, though. Did two Amiga golf games in 1994 and 1997, Hole in One in 2001, in Blitz, then Par Fore last year in Blitz3D:

I think four golf games in 11 years is enough for anybody.

Wasn't Mario Golf sort of like that? I coulda sworn that Nintendo did a Mario Golf already for N64, not too sure if they made a GBA version, tho, or a Gamecube version... Then again, the original NES version of Golf looked like it featured Mario as the golfer, or a certain resemblance.

Hey, Dave, you know what? I don't know if I ever told you this, but I've always been insanely jealous of your success with game development. All my ideas come to nothing - I guess I'm more of a designer than a programmer, and a lazy arse to boot.

Damn you and your slick looking golf games! Damn you straight to hell! Ok, so I'm exaggerating but your games certainly do look slick and I really *am* envious.

So, err, you can take that as a begrudging compliment of sorts, I guess. Not that I couldn't make better games than you. of course. I'm just too busy at the moment. Yes, that's it, I'm too busy.

Ok, back to the topic: I've always liked crazy golf games. I remember getting a crazy gold game free with my Spectrum 128+2 (and another game called 'punchy', anyone remember that?) which I enjoyed playing.

most mini golf games i've played aren't fast-paced enough. i'm talking free roaming, no holds barred access to the course in first person view. walk up to the ball and smack it. no meters or club choices.

I was working on this:

But it was never completed.

do you still have the source?

I sure do. In fact, I'll email it to you if you want.

Gfk: do you actually play golf IRL?

please do, that would be great. what did you model the course with?

@markd - I modeled the levels with Maplet, very simple. Where would you like me to email you the source?

Please, could you email me the source, too?

bricemanuel@...

my email is in my profile, but instead please use markdeaton@...

i appreciate the effort.

Gfk: do you actually play golf IRL?
Nope. Hate it and always have.

When I wrote my first golf game in 1994, it wasn't going to be golf, originally. Imagine an isometric version of Tanx/Scorched Earth etc - was gonna be that. First thing I did was to write some code to make a 'tank shell' fire from A to B. When I got it working, it moved much more slowly than I anticipated, and I thought it looked more like a golf ball than a tank shell. Thus, International Golf was born. It got published by Alternative Software in December 1994.
