Games That Cried Out For Sequels

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Games That Cried Out For Sequels

What games do you think cried out for sequels but didn't get any? Specifically didn't get any, not games that got sequels, but should have had another.

I'll start off with Planescape:Torment, one of the finest RPG's I've ever played. It had a strong narrative, brilliant characterisation, bucketloads of black humour, ingenious puzzles, a REAL roleplaying system ( dialog, actions, weapons, just everything was based around your character's abilities ) and a true alignment system where every action mattered. And they just picked a fantastic RPG system to base it on. Leagues ahead of Baldur's Gate and the cliche world of Forgotten Realms.

I'd also like to add Shadow of the Comet, which was one of my favourite adventure games, making brilliant use of the Lovecraft license to create a creepy, intriguing game that really captured Lovecraft but didn't detract from a brilliant adventure game. And no, Prisoner of Ice was not a sequel to Shadow of the Comet, it was a similar game in the same genre from the same developer with the same setting. It was not, however, a sequel.

A Grim Fandango sequel would be nice long as whoever produces such a sequel could have it live up to it's predecessor.

That and a Beyond Good & Evil 2, the first game was highly underrated....great game.

I would have liked to have seen a sequel to Mafia. Not a direct one that continued the story from the first one, as it was wrapped up pretty nicely there, but a sequel with a different lead character and a different story, but still about 1930s Mafia.

What I loved about the original was the story. You were always taking one step forward and two steps back, things went from bad to worse. And the lead protagonist was infinately more likeable than those in any of the GTA games I've played.

Ragnar

i would have said Mafia too. So, I'll say Arx Fatalis.

That and a Beyond Good & Evil 2, the first game was highly underrated....great game.

Agreed, very underrated. It bombed though, so I guess we're out of luck.

Street Fighter ... oh wait nevermind ...

Arx Fatalis
Painkiller
Outlaws

That's all I can think of.

Planescape:Torment
100% agree. The game rocked and was freaky!
Arx Fatalis
yup, neat game. I found out about it from a Gamespot games of year type thing, hadn't really heard much about it but I picked it up cheap and was delighted to find it like Ultima Underworld.
Beyond Good & Evil
Another game (on PS2) I just read the rating of on Gamespot, thought it might be OK for my son to play with me, and it was a great game. The ending even had a suggestion of a sequal.

hmm, I know I haven't added anything to list myself yet but I'll think on it tomorrow.

Oh, another: Arcanum.

aha got some, just by looking at my collection (of PC games) on the shelves:

- Forsaken
- Klingon Honour Guard (it was OK, sequal could have been better!)
- Sin (it had a mission pack, does that count?)
- Kingpin (this was classic!)
- Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine (improved upon Tomb Raider)
- Outcast (weird french game with voxels)
- Daikatana (only kidding;-)
- The Fallen: Stat Trek: Deep Space Nine
- Full Thottle
- The Dig
- Bioforge (anyone remember that? You had to beat a man with his own arm to escape a cell or something lol)
- Severance (this was pretty neat actually)

well, some you may think don't "cry out" but they were all neat games in their own right imho.

[edit] yeah Painkiller, good one Noel, I assumed it had a sequal but I was thinking of the mission pack.

- Outcast (weird french game with voxels)

There was sortof a sequel to it, but it was canned. One of the most beautiful games I'd seen at the time.

- Sin

Should pay more attention to gaming news, they're making one.

- Daikatana (only kidding;-)

While over-hyped, Daikatana was fun for a shooter.

well Beyond Good and Evil was planned as a trilogy/series of games but due to low sales ubisoft didnt give the sequel a green light

My fav Daikatana level was the greek(?) beach one, it had a nice feel. Actually the start of the game was fiddly and annoying, it got better later on imho. btw, I've finished all the ones in my list :-) used to have more spare time!

Oh yeah, Mr. Cat's name reminded me of another one:
Omikron: The Nomad Soul

The one game that had an extremely long lifetime for me was Project Eden (I had it on PS2 - I dunno if it was on any other). The ability to play with 4 people in the main game mode (as you played as a team of 3 people and a robot - and had to control them all) was great and many a day during the summer hols (for 2 years in a row I think) two of my mates would come round and we would just play it. The second year we actually managed to complete it!

- Full Thottle

Ah, now if only the sequel for that and Sam & Max didn't get the boot......oh well, I had my doubts both would have transcended well into the blocky polygonal world anyhow.

The ability to play with 4 people in the main game mode

I quite loved that as well, until I realized the game text was freaking unreadable on my 21" CRT w/ 2+ players. Still beat controlling all 4 yourself in a follow-the-leader fashion, was also fun discussing how abouts we should maneuver said obstacles in the way, more-so in the missions where the group is split up into 2 seperate areas.

Starship Troopers

But a sequel where it's done properly - with squad based tactics, rpg elements (upgrades etc..) and high production values.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul

I was gonna mention that in my first post, but wasn't sure anyone else would remember it. Although it never did get a sequel, at least it did get a spiritual successor in Fahrenheit / Indigo Prophecy from the same guy ( David Cage. )

Final Fantasy 6... why not, if 7 gets additional stuff, why not FFVI-2

I'd like more old bullfrog sequels, and indigo prophecy would be great too.

Oh, another: Arcanum.
Definately.

Also I think an Airborne Ranger sequel is long overdue.

Just Command and Conquer:Renegade 2 for me. Providing EA don't rip the game to shreds and release it at 45% finished again. <sigh>

Syndiate - I dont count that crappy 3D version as a sequel.

I agree with outcast. The sequal screenshots are still around somewhere, and they looks pretty famn good. :(

Remember that "Hill Street Blues" game for the Amiga? That would make a cool sequel I reckon.

Also if we're allowed to not count crappy 3D sequels, a proper Flashback sequel would be really cool.

The most wanted: The Dig...and please let me be part of the dev-team!!! :O)

Beside of this mostly story driven games like Zak MacKracken, Sam&Max, Hexplore (not so much story but very addictive), Outcast, MindWalker (for the insane feeling), ...

I'd like to see a sequal to Absolute Zero. The basic concept was slightly bewildering, but worked well.

An ordinary mining colony coming under attack by aliens, so you have to convert the mining equipment to defend against these aliens.

Or how about a sequal to bureaucracy?!

>Starship Troopers

I quite liked ST, except it only worked on Win98 in very specific configurations.

Andy

Starcraft

I´m still waiting for a sequal to pong, I don´t count that quad player version a sequal.

Command and Conquer:Renegade 2
hmm, really aren't all Command and Conquer games (except the original) sequals? Or is Renegade so radically different it can be called a new game?

Also: On Amiga, Jim Power. Actually I musn't go down the retro route or I'll think of TONs. I've seen sooo many games over the years...

MOONSTONE 2! :) (one that doesn't crash too)

They ARE making a new Sam n Max game. The original comic writer has been putting up his comics for Telltale Games (makers of Bone and ex-Lucasarts - I think) for a new storyline.

http://www.telltalegames.com/comics/samnmax

Got a weird thing going on where you mouse over the panels to read the conversations...quite amusing.

Yep, Renegade was a FPS. It was slated by the press and public alike, but it was actually quite a fun little game.

Also if we're allowed to not count crappy 3D sequels, a proper Flashback sequel would be really cool.

Absolutely, I was a huge fan of Flashback and I'd love to see a proper sequel too.

Yep, Renegade was a FPS
Ah, OK thanks for clearing that up.

re: flashback - I concur. Finished it, wasn't easy.

I loved that game, speci in multiplay mode, building up bases, flying around in coppers, and such like... It wicked game.

EDIT:

I think they should just leave it. Dont get me wrong awsome game, but I just think they should leave it.

Also I think an Airborne Ranger sequel is long overdue.
Yeah!

And a Moonstone sequel. I just played it again with a couple of mates, that game has got killer atmosphere.

You know, I'd kill for a Painkiller2 with LAN/Online co-op play...

Elite - but that is coming, some day...

but Elite did have sequals (or remakes) of sorts.

If i remember right Frontier was the successor to Elite.

McDonaldLand.

Yeah Syndicate wars was pants, a good syndicate 2 would be great!

i tryed to make one but got a bit stuck :O(

lol @ Cygnus. I vote we ban him ;-)

One of my all time favorites, "FULL THROTTLE"!

There was a sequel that got killed with the "Sam and Max" sequel. But unlike SnM there wasn't anyone to fight the good fight and get "Full Throttle" out of the clutches of Lucas Art's hands.

/me *remembers tossing countless windup bunnies into the open grill of a moving semi truck all to the tune of Flight of the Valkyrie*

Eh? I thought Renegade was an 80s scrolling beat-em-up made by Technos Corp.

Eh? I thought Renegade was an 80s scrolling beat-em-up made by Technos Corp.
Played that one too. Got the tape around somewere.

What's this new Renegade then? If it's a FPS then it's obviously just crap.

meh.

Renegade: played on arcade, spec and C64. It was OK. There was a sequal too I'm sure I played.

Freelancer

Target Renegade.

Moonstone, hell yeah! How could I forget that one? Hired Guns too!

Chronicles of Riddick. Hey anyone know if it's got a mission pack?

Mafia..

@enay: If they did a Moonstone 2 I would... well, it would probably be crap but if it was back in the day I'd crap my pants.

If it's a FPS then it's obviously just crap.

One good comment... and then this absolute goose up.

Or is Renegade so radically different it can be called a new game?

It's a FPS for starters =]

It was slated by the press and public alike,

And the sequel which WW started working on was canned by EA because of how badly the first one did, because EA completely screwed up the development. <cries> I have deep resentment.

@flameduck : Same as for my Moonstone comment. I don't think a 'fully 3D' Hired Guns would have the same feel.

D/GEN... I have the LAST version (windows 95) still play it too!

Toby: Who said anything about 3D?

I agree with CoR escape from butcher bay.... That was seriously one of the best single player FPSs ever.

DampeS8N: Yeah really atmospheric and interesting too.

>hmm, really aren't all Command and Conquer games (except
>the original) sequals? Or is Renegade so radically

More importantly, wasn't Command and Conquer just a sequel to Dune II?

Andy

I much prefer original games to sequels but, having said that, I wouldn't say no to another Monkey Island or (preferably) Quest for Glory game.

Ah, when I think about what could be done with the Quest for Glory series these days I get all dreamy.

Toby: Who said anything about 3D?

If... whoever owns the rights to Moonstone decided to do a sequel today, do you honestly see them going the 2D route?

More importantly, wasn't Command and Conquer just a sequel to Dune II?

Nope. Completely different universe. Same game play. Emporer:Battle for Dune is the sequel to Dune2/2000.

I agree with CoR escape from butcher bay.... That was seriously one of the best single player FPSs ever.
Maybe I just didn't get too far, but most of the time I played I didn't actually have a gun. So wouldn't the term First Person Beat-em-up be more appropriate?

If... whoever owns the rights to Moonstone decided to do a sequel today, do you honestly see them going the 2D route?
Well whoever owns Moonstone waould be TLC, and yeah, if I can picture them even making a Moonstone sequel at all, it could most definately be a 2D one.

Nope. Completely different universe. Same game play.
So what you're saying is that Command & Conquer: Red Alert isn't a C&C sequel either?

First Person Beat-em
later on there's this cool level where you have to keep returning to a ring in a prison to fist fight harder men until you can escape. It's cool.

So what you're saying is that Command & Conquer: Red Alert isn't a C&C sequel either?

No, actually RA is a prequel.

maybe for the purposes of this thread "sequal" should encompass "prequal" and maybe also "another version".

Raid On Bungling Bay. Top game.

The last Will Wright game I really enjoyed, as it turns out. :o)
