windows vista ?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/windows vista ?
what are the chances of blitz max running ok on windows vista? from beta previews it looks like alot of todays games will have problems, window xp here we go again. All to play halo 2 (im not sold yet) Linux here we come!
Pete
Max runs fine in Vista at present. (again.)
I was so bummed when I realized I couldn't play all my old dos games in XP.... but I only upgraded cause i picked up a vicious bug in my 98 box that made it not run anything but Dos.... NOTHING ELSE would run. and no one could figger out why.
in any case, I was running 2 PCs next to eachother for about 2 years... Dos on one, and Xp on the other. I'd play a game on the dos box, Zork, Warcraft, Terminal Velocity, Quake, Ultima. And do work on the other at the same time.....
Ok... Yes.. I would play 2 games at once... sometimes 3... Zork, Civ 3, and Dragon Quest 8 most recently.
Now I just play 2 at a time... Dossy Died.
Yes. BlitzMAX will run just fine on Windows Vista Forever - just like all kinds of other legacy software. After all it's only XP with a transparent user interface and "savable searches".
I wonder how many new features MS cut out to please that bunch of whiners?
I wonder how many new features MS cut out to please that bunch of whiners?
None. They cut out 'new' features because they coundn't figure out how to get it to work on an archaic legacy platform, and they didn't have enough backbone to ask people to upgrade if they wanted a modern OS.

I've used VMWare to play some old DOS games that wouldn't work in XP -- running a sandboxed Win98 installation on top of XP...
Sure, technically it's slower than running it natively in win98 itself, but since todays CPU's are way faster than they were in the Win95-Win98 days anyway, you won't even notice losing a few cycles here and there for vmware overhead.
What about Blitz 3D stuff? Does this work okay in Vista?
Yes. B3D works in Vista, Again. Again :)
Someone explain to me why it needs a gig of ram to operate :)
After all it's only XP with a transparent user interface and "savable searches".
no it runs on a new file system and when PC zone tested it, even microsoft office didnt run right so its not that easy! plus it uses a 1.5gb pagefile so its alot more hungry than xp.
Pete

Well obviously you need some windows to look at...

Pete: The new Filesystem (WinFS) has been scrapped from the Vista release because it wasn't ready...
the majority of 'breakthrough' enhancements in Vista has been removed from the launch version, there really isn't a whole lot left other than 'XP with a (questionably) pretty picture' with significantly increase system requirements and digital restrictions management out the wazoo.
great well what the point then apart from everything running slower because your system is having most of its power used running the os? hehe
Pete
Because it has been a couple of years since the last OS release, so it's time again.
That's really all there is to it. So why should you, as a user, care about vista?
Good question. I, for one, certainly won't be rushing out to buy it. In the long run vista will still take over simply because the majority of Microsoft windows sales are due to bundled OEM copies with new machines, and you simply won't have a choice when buying a new system... but other than that, the take-off rate is projected to be lower than with their previous operating systems -- especially in corporate environments, due to the increased system specs with little funcionality in return.
the .net framework will be integral to the operating system now as well... That's a major change. How does it affect the end user? Not so much.
Vista isn't out for another year. It'll be out in Q2 07 - just wtf is wrong with people with all these lame threads?
> just wtf is wrong with people with all these lame threads?
It's that most people just worry about the future, and forget about the present, and the now. It happens.
what now!!! there is no now...
therefore, there is no present...
there is only the future to... and a rememberance of things past...
the very fact that as soon as you finish saying now is proof that it doesn't exist...
it's clear that you have no concept of the continuum you call time...none whatsever...
maybe Vista will open new windows for you to better perceive your position...
:)

therefore, there is no present...
There is. Now. But you
just missed it. ;-)
Vista is XP with an even bigger layer of bloat, yay MS.
Strikes me as odd that there's so many people bashing Vista when they haven't really seen it in action (well, OK, some of us haven't tried the beta yet).
The other thing is, you know damn well that you'll be running Vista by the end of 2007, even if it's a dual-boot with XP.
I agree - all this Vista bashing is pointless. You'll all be using it soon enough. By that time, you'll all be slagging off the next mooted verion of Windows. :P

well i know you'll be running it. heh.

Windows Vista? Bah. I'll take Ubuntu any day of the week, thank you very much. Vista just seems to be XP with a boat load of bloat.

SMC: No point pinning your hopes on niche OS'.
Until you can shove a PC under the nose of the average desk-jockey that will perfectly interoperate with Windows and MS Office, whilst supporting all features of Outlook / Exchange Server and has mature drivers for modern gear, you're stuck with the current monopoly.
I know you can replace Windows with Linux and Wine, but that is incredibly pointless. You still need the Windows license to operate Wine.
Replace MS Office with OpenOffice? In a few years perhaps, when it's more stable, interoperates better and has fewer non-workaroundable bugs which are apparent when performing everyday tasks. But then, where's the support? OK, buy RedHat (or suchlike), you get paid-for support then. But.... why have you done this? It's going to cost you for a RedHat license and your IT staff are going to very much need to know exactly how to administer the whole thing, which is not easy with Linux because it's such a sprawling beast.
Windows isn't exactly lean, but there's documentation galore and very mature training available. That's before you have recourse to look on MSDN.
Just to set the record straight, I'm anti-MS (as much as the next guy) and I'd like nothing more than to see their monopoly toppled and to have, once more, a competative market. Competition is good for consumers because we end up with better and cheaper products.
I do see Vista solving a few of our everyday minor operational niggles. Even something as daft as sorting files by date order. Not creation date, but a date given to it by its creator ;) The current solution is to begin the filename with YYYY-MM-DD, hardly elegant. I'm not sure if this will make it into the final build, perhaps the lamented WinFS (when it appears) will provide such a thing. We've all got more files on our drives than we did 10 years ago. Not just because HD capacity has increased, but because we're storing more varied datasets (HDTV streams, mp3 collections, our life histories - as blogs). We definately need a better way of managing them. The old 'drives, folders and files' protocol should perhaps be questioned.

You should click on the link and read about it. :D
After all it's only XP with a transparent user interface
Actually, that will only be availale on some of the "eight" versions of Vista. The lower end versions will not have the transparent GUI system.

Seriously -- when is the last time that you actually called *microsoft* for problems regarding to office?
The majority of places use a 3rd party helpdesk anyway, from that point of view it makes little difference which flavor of office you're using.
i only really asked if anyone has used max with the beta of vista and does it work?
it seams the answers yes. so its fine by me i just dont want to spend a year or so on a game to find it doent work with the new os.
Pete

Ealier today. It was suddenly deactivated for some reason.

In either case, that's BRLs problem, not yours.

OK... and the last time for reasons other than microsoft actively taking something away from you?
> it seams
Mmm, thready!
