Saw these last night (albeit on TV). I actually felt slightly offended.

Ever heard of... um... alternative operating systems?

Apple seems to have just discovered them.
I guess they haven't noticed yet that they have been living in the past for all this time.


What these (very well constructed) ads are telling me is that Apple believes that I am too stupid to exercise choice in computer software. (And displays).
No way I'll be spending much on them now...

hehe, the kid looks like a dork and can't do anything cool gamewise with his mac. I was looking at the apple store to see what games were coming and its abysmal.

You must mean as opposed to the number of cool PC games that are just falling out of the sky.

Lets see, Civilization IV, World of Warcraft and Call of Duty 2. Yeah that pretty much covers all the games anyone I know with a PC plays aswell.

And look, they'll even have Heroes V, which is probably the only game anyone is really looking forward to.

The only thing I'll miss playing is Rogue Trooper, which I've already completed, and if I feel like playing it again, I suppose I can always dual boot with XP.

And I agree with Noel. Anything endorsed by a Hilton has to be trash.

There's tons of good games out there, depending on your particular tastes.

Every time I see paris hilton I remember that dumb ass Chantelle that won the celebrity big brother, despite not being a celebrity.

Sorry, after seeing those commercials, it just makes me want a Mac even less!

They are obviously targeting the morons of the computing industry "HEY lets talk to you like children, that will get us customers".

I have a good amount of respect for Apple with some of the good products they have come out with, however this obviously desperate advert chain just lost alot of it.

First of all Paris is a good looking girl. Second, the Apple ad is pretty spot on. PC users are generally stuffy and tech /spec oriented and Mac users are more relaxed. They're not trying to convert hardcore PC users.

And I bet you thought you had a bad job. :o>

As for Apple, I find myself agreeing with Jeremy. Steve Jobs knows he can't convert the hard-core PC fanatics, who think "A computer with only one mouse button?" is funny.

BTW has anyone tried the mac 2 button mouse? what a load of old crock. They tried to hide it in what looks like the 1 button mouse, and its really hard to use properly as a consequence.

Mac's are good for people like my aunt (who does have one) actualy most people I know who use macs are over 50 and fairly well off. Younger people tend to have computers to play games and get PC's.

Nope. I've seen the 'no button' mouse (PowerMouse or something), which was really cool.

Well the same is certainly true for the Mac. Even Linux, if your particular tastes happen to be solitaire card games. :o>

Mighty Mouse. That is their multi-button version, although it looks like it doesn't have any...



Personally I'd rather have a normal two-button mouse that actually gives you some decent tactile feedback after clicking on something, rather than Apple's 'reimagination' that looks more like a glorified suppository.

That's funny. I used to have one of those. I think it was possessed. Every now and then it would jump around to a random location, or slowly creep around the desktop, without anyone touching it, kinda like a high-tech Ouija board. I'll stick to my Logitech Trackman Marble, thanks all the same. The best product Microsoft ever made was Windows 2000 Professional.

Hmm i love my miniMac for:

a) It is very silent so that i barley can hear anything. Sometimes you wonder if it's turned on at all. You really have to stress it that you hear the fan.
b) That i wasn't forced to buy the crappy apple keyboard or somekind of mighty mouse. I still use a keyboard i'm used to and a nice logitech mouse.
c) With the miniMac i didn't feel that i got ripped from Apple like i would have felt when buying an iMac or a PowerMac.
d) Surfing without a virus tool stealing processing time.
e) Osx has some really nice features and a lot of things are a little bit more straightforward.
f) The software updates work just fine.

I hate my miniMac for:

a) For stuff like the finder, spotlight and iTunes. They all just suck.
b) No audio in.
c) For that i can't expand it and that i didn't had a chance to say: I care about graphics and a good hd, gimme better ones to a higher price please.
d) That i can't run the software which i've bought and i'm used to on win.
e) You can't play most of the nice games...

Bottomline for me is that i never again want a loud computer. I always hated all this fan noise and once you got used to a silent machine again you don't wanna give it away fo sure.
In the end i think there are good chances that i'll buy one again when the price is okay, 10.5 will be out and they've upgraded the graphics card and maybe already with merom. Then the speed should have improved as well as the graphics so it would be suited much more better for developing.

Dunno how long it will take till there will be systems out which follow a low-noise strategy built on merom on the pc. This could also be an alternative. We'll see...

That macmouse, do mac'oids have a rightmousebutton by holding down some shiftkey orso while pressing their only mousebutton? When I'm making some gfx-tools it's usually loaded with keycombis and RMB functionality.. and in these days of BMax, an app might be runable on mac.. but would it really work with all my RMB stuff?

I can't tell you as my mouse has more than one button...

The key combo for emulating right-clicking is holding down Ctrl. If you're making the tool to sell, then make sure it doesn't require a right-mouse button; that can be an optional shortcut for stuff, but make sure there is a button or something so that people can just click on the function they want.

If it's just for your own use, any USB mouse will work, it doesn't have to be a mac mouse. Not only do right-buttons work fine, so do scroll wheels.

hm.. it's not really for sale orso, more like freeware within a certain community.. I'd rather piss on those mac zealots who refuse to buy a 2-button mouse. To me, the speed of operation with such a tool is #1 priority, if a RMB increases such speed heavily then I'd use it.. bad luck for the mac zealots..

Graphic design students do. The whole one-button thing was done for braniacs like them.

Photoshop users with one-button mice isn't that big a deal, really. Adobe went out of their way to make sure Photoshop is perfectly usable with only one button. What gets me are the architecture students who try to model in 3D with a one-button mouse.

Mac running Windows XP:

"Now, Right-Click on My Computer."

I had a conversation once where we concluded that the whole one-button/two-button dispute is sort of the nerd version of automatic vs. manual transmission. Like, I suppose it makes a real objective difference to the minority of people who race cars, but for most people the difference is pretty much psychological and ego-driven.

EDIT: Incidentally, while I like apple computers, and I like the industrial design of their hardware, I really wish they'd knock it off with the condescending, self-gratifying ads. Who do they think they are, Grey Poupon?

that mighty mouse that looks like it has no button uses the one button for both left and right clicking, imagine the top surface of the mouse being a pivoting switch and thats pretty much it.

Biggest problem for me is that you can click the right mouse by accident very easily. it has 2 other buttons one on each side, but almost useless as they are hard to reach.

The usual form over function thing. If you have the macmini with the extra ram it can actually multitask 2 programs without crawling, so if do get one, the extra ram goes a long way and adds some responsiveness to an otherwise dog slow system.

If your lucky you might get a HD thats more than 4200rpm, some of them come with faster HD, depending on which batch you get, same with ram.

That Mac mouse with the track ball scroll thing is pretty cool. I used that in the store. I like it mostly because of the trackball though. Instead of just being able to scroll up and down you can scroll in any direction. I didn't really mess with right clicking though. I like my older Mac mouse which has no buttons or scroll wheels it just looks cool.

The only way to fight it is to create apps with real RMB functionality and push these apps into the mac-world.. I mean, come on, what does a typical USB mouse cost these days? NOT having one is just ridiculous..

Ok, perhaps not for old ladies doing their email, but I'd at least expect the pro-market (ppl using their mac for their job) to have a decent mouse.., esp. when it concerns creative tools.

See, that is so missing the point. The mac design philosophy is that requiring a right mouse button is ridiculous. It's not that they can't be bothered to get one, it's that they don't want one.

This is making me think about something though. I have a scroll-wheel mouse for both my PC and Mac, and the only times I use the right mouse button are for accessing certain commands in Maya and for bringing up info on a file (Properties in Windows, Get Info on Mac.) Considering that neither function is of interest to the majority of computer users, what the hell difference does it make if they have a one-button mouse?

Just to pick up on what taumel was saying about silent computers. Silence is golden. I used to have a Dual PIII noise monster, and eventually I got so fed up with the noise that I couldn't be bothered to turn it on anymore.

While some of the Mac's are very silent, it's quite possible to buy or build silent PCs too. My new system, an AMD64 3500+ box, with GeForce 6800 graphics card is almost completely silent. I made sure I got a silent box to start with and a silent powersupply. I replaced the fan on the graphic cards, which was by far the most noisy component, with that huge flower like thing from Zalman, which made it run both cooler and silent. Replaced one chasis fan with a silent one, mainly because the one I got with the box was broken. Then I put the hardisk in a silencing box, as I could hear it whining now that the rest of the machine hardly made any sound. Bit sceptical about that though, it will probably die sooner than it should from extra heat in the box. All in all it cost maybe $200-300 extra to get it silent, but was definately worth it. The end result is a very quiet and quite powerfull machine....uh, except for the DVD drive which is very loud, but I couldn't be bothered with that as I don't use it that often.

I also have a cute little 12" iBook, which is reasonably silent. If running something heavy on it though, like 3D games, the fans will kick in and it becomes rather loud. These fans never kick in during what I normally use it for:surfing, writing, drawing, web design, coding, etc. so it's not a problem. If I want to play 3D games, I use my PC anyway. :)

I've actually really come to like my iBook and use it more than my PC. I think it has to do with that it's very small and I can just sit crosslegged in bed with it and type or surf, and don't need to sit at a desk (which I do all day at work). The OS is nice too. :)

In this case the experts suffer from the n00bs.. and it's experts I prefer to aim at. Not that I care one bit about any Mac, but in these bmax days it could be that my app does run on a Mac, and I'm so not going to adjust my functionality-design to Mac just because of some ppl who can't seperate two buttons..
