That article is funny in so many ways.
If it only takes an ameteur armed with a hackers' handbook to do this stuff, they deserve everything they get.

Can't say I'm all that interested in his extra terrestrial space craft stuff at the moment since the article does not go in-depth into what he says, and only brushes the surface -- just like every other. Don't get me wrong, though, I'm very curious about the whole thing and I hate coverups like that.
But that is pretty funny if he did, in fact, manage to hack all those things so easily.
I would suggest that the US gov't switch to Linux, but after seeing (unreliably, but believably enough) some of the code that they get people to write (multiple calls to the same If statement in case the computer "forgets"), I doubt they would trust it.

That's what happened down in Waco, TX. The commune there had hackers that found evidence of drug importation and exportation from the air base not far from their camp. That's when the government decided it would be easier to cyanide gas them and cook their children with flame throwers than risk information of CIA drug running coming out. Don't mess with the government, they'll send the ATF with tanks to your front door.
Well, the problem here - is you can bring up lists of Military systems via Google - secondly, from what I can tell, they are not exactly hard to get into. In fact, "McKinnon" comments on that.
"McKinnon" was not alone in his exploits - half the world seemed to be in the systems he was in - this is probably one of his cards he is going to play in the trial. I think he is going to try and blow the whistle on the amount of people breaking into those systems and how easy they are for enemies of the US to get into.
I am personally am in favour of people at least attempting to break into the first line of defence to encourage the US Government/military to remove them from coming up in Google in the first place. I think you can safely bet your life that terrorists, etc are already in there.

I think you'd be surprised at how few people use 'smart' passwords or even password their stuff at all.
Waaaaay back in the day... Someone gave me the address to a computer and a login/password. I telnetted in (this was before the web or slightly after it. can't remember.) As soon as I saw where I was logged into I got the hell outta dodge so-to-speak. Seems I was logged into a computer system at White Sands Missle Range.
Heh, the company I work for does contract work for the US Navy and I can definately assure you that none of their "sensitive data" stuff is really all that "secure", unless you consider using MS Access databases and Excel files very secured...lol....

10+ years ago I almost ended up in court for hacking IRC Cop status on an IRC server.
When I first got into the internet I came across IRC chat. While in a chat channel my PC kept crashing and eventually I found out that sending a corrupted TCP packet caused the crash. I spent a while finding how that caused the crash and how to stop it from happening to me again. Also how to do that and other things to other PC's
To cut a long story I went on to "I wonder if it is possibe to...." and trace-ablilty back to me didn't even enter into it. Before going to work one day I noticed that my internet access did not work, so while at work I phoned my ISP to complain only to be transfered to the guy in charge of that ISP.
He explained that he'd received information that I'd hacked into a IRC server and that possible prosecution could happen. With a lot of frantic talking between me, him and the IRC team I managed to get my internet access restored and no further action taken.
After that I deleted the hacker info and tools I had, removed my accounts from hacked servers and have not looked into it ever since.
I'm glad I got caught when I did because no doubt I would of progressed on from there to other things and the outcome could of been a lot different than a slap on the wrist.

I tell Gary that I've seen videos like that - incredibly fierce special forces training videos - when I was researching my book about US psychological operations.
That's the interviewer there at the end admitting to having seen these videos himself. So either they're both full of **** or he atctually did see secret stuff and at least some of what he's revealing he really did see.

I once phreaked free calls for a few months until I had a call from a chap at 'BT security'. A nice long chat whereby it was all kept very friendly and very polite and neither of us gave anything away resulted in me not attempting to defraud BT again.

I know a lot about programming, a lot more than many fledgling programmers. If they write a secure system, odds are I could crack it and that's the problem with security.
I have to write a secure system next week, and I know there are people out there better than me who can do stuff I havn't even a clue of the concept about.
So with the best will in the world, I will probably fail.

Only way to prove what he said is to hack them yourself, and I don't think Ill be doing that.

A shame it didn't work both ways, and BT stopped defrauding you aswell.The weakest point in even the most basic security system is always the end-user. It doesn't matter how great your system is if your password is 1234.
He said it was easy, despite being only a rank amateur. Using the hacking name "Solo", he discovered that many US top-security systems were using an insecure Microsoft Windows program and had no password protection at all.

If the US Military and government are using insecure systems - what about everyone else - what about banks, hospitals, police, etc, etc?
