when do you people predict this type of landscapes can be rendered in realtime (good framerate also)?

Yep. like stated above, in a few years you can.I remember looking at the cover of games around 1990 and dream about when pictures like that could
be done in real-time. And they have been around for several years already :o)

wow, those are impressive computer generated images. Pity there's not an equivalent app for random character generation of similar quality.
The vegetation, in particular, is impressive, as that's new to me. But the depth of field, the lighting, the amount of detail and the sheer "it's a bloody photo" -ness of the pictures is stunning across the board.
Realtime? If you assume that one of those scenes takes an hour to render on a decent PC (somewhere around Athlon X2 4400), applying Moore's law you get:-
Current: 1 frame per 3600 seconds.
+18 months: 1 frame per 1800 seconds.
+36 months: 1 frame per 900 seconds.
...
...
...
+288 months: 18.2 frames per second.
That's 24 years, folks ;)

aha, but Terragen (and most renderers) only uses the CPU for rendering, the GPU isn't used at all.
Factor in the *immense* power of most modern GPU's, apply Moores Law, and that 24 years is prob less than 5 :)

I always took it to be 'computing power doubled', but you're right :)
It's also every 12 months, not evey 18 months. This brings my estimate down to 18 years before Terragen-esque graphical abilities become realtime.
How long has raytracing been around? Still it's not a realtime task (apart from certain aspects of raytracing at limited resolutions). Useful realtime (can be applied to a game) reaytracing is still a few years off. Not as many now, but still not a 'tomorrow' thing.
Probably this will happen much earlier. For example pukis forest screenie from oblivion has a better vegetation then the screenie seen on the terragen2 page ( http://lucbianco.free.fr/3D/TGD216.jpg? ) IMHO.
But basilcy there is something like a sonic wall, that's the screen resolution. It wouldn't make much sense to render more triangles than there are pixels on screen. So ~1 Million tris, or 2 millions if you want, will be more than enough to visualize photorealism. Using a clever LOD model will allow to skip everything unneccessary. A distance and VIS controlled LOD based on dynamic triangulation/reduction maybe.
I guess we'll be there in 5 years.

maybe in 5 years harddisks or game-media are so big you can just store a screenshot of every location in the game, every camera angle, etc. ^_^
I've heard they plan to sell DVD recorders with several hundred gigs per disc in 2008.

Render a character in 3DSMax, then watch that same
character model run in realtime in a game engine. 3DSMax
(And other rendering software) takes super long because it
uses absolute precision, among other things, and it
doesn't use the gpu.
Using Lod/imposters, optimized textures, lower-quality
precision, a gpu and shaders, I'd say the average gamer pc
could chug through these terragen scenes in "realtime" at
about 1 frame a minute, at worst. (That's a very rough guess)
I agree. 5 Years or less before we can walk through these
beautiful terrains.
