New Windows98 BlitzMax Sound Text

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/New Windows98 BlitzMax Sound Text

Thursday 27th April, AM.

OK, I've got a new version of my game framework to test that *may* have working sound in windows 98/ME.

Please test it if you have a suitable Win98 PC with sound. You are really helping the community out here, many thanks in advance.

Here it is:

bumping this for Big10p and Sledge. If you've got time, your tests would be MEGA appreciated by everyone! We've had once successful test of the new code already by Matty.

OK, this appears to be fixed on my son's 166MHz Wn98 PC. I ran an old demo and the sound was horrid, the new demo the sound is fine. Just need to confirm this with some other people testing...

Yep, just sent you an email, Grey. This new version seems to have done the job! All sounds and music are playing fine, now. :)

thumbs up for the AXEMAN!

This is great news for sure. Now we can make games that run on that highly debated percentage of Win98/Me PCs without worry = MORE SALES and MORE COVERAGE.

Now: streaming music....

.oggs as priority because they don't need licences.

Also, the jerkyness and vertical tearing issues, both in windowed mode and in full-screen mode, aren't 100% sorted on all PCs. It's getting better on lots, and is perfect on plenty. It's almost like full-screen BMax should actually prevent other windows tasks from interfering so that the game rendering doesn't get hitched up by crappy windows admin tasks or whatever. Then the game logic wouldn't need to catch up with a jerk. Also there just doesn't seem to be an easy way to totally stop vertical tearing on some setups, this is a bummer for 2D action games. I'm sure some other games must sort this out - although plenty have terrible scrolling and animation. Heavy Weapon works very well on mine as it scrolls, wonder how it works on toublesome systems. What we need is a testbed of games made in other languages to compare with Max games on a variety of systems to see how they all handle scrolling and smooth movement of sprites.

Really hope Mark fix it from internal... although 9x can be considered as old OS, but strange behaviors are potential bugs...

Turned to torque coz the long waiting of Max3D, BMax is still long way to go...

Same here.

The 98 sound bug IS fixed. The jerking and vertical tearing is on any OS, but not on all PCs, just some.

What's the nature of this sound fix for 98? Something you've done in code or a module update? I've been waiting for a fix for Triviality for bloody ages, and if it's now solvable, I'd like to get on it.

various fixes and tweaks - a sync mods will update you... please report back with your findings :)

yeah man, do a syncmods and that's it. Well you might have to do a rebuild mods too, I'm neverquite sure on this.

No need for rebuild mods unless you modify them yourself.

aha I see, thanks.

That's actually one of the new features of Windows vista, that a game (directX 10?) can unload a good chunk of the OS so it won't take up resources in the background.
