I was playing it last night, gonna have another try now. But it's just like Doom3, loadsa small indistinguishable coridoors, and annoying backtracking and kinda unfulfilling killing. Just a mishmash of fancy effects but nothing memorable, yawn :-o
Quake 4 is crap!
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Quake 4 is crap! Really? I love it. We play 1.1 multiplayer most nights.
I like killing things. Not enough people appreciate that killing things is fun.
I highly recommend people get Painkiller, too.

I have to agree with Grey.
Nowel, killing things in itself isn't fun... its how fun killing things is made in the game that matters.
I mean... what if the game forced you to hand load a musket between shots, with some kinda really lame minigame thats more a task than a game. Like... it forced you to tap a button 100 times, to the beat of a drum.... easy and boring like.
that wouldn't be fun at all.. but you'd still be killing things.
ID sucks. They seem to think that a crap sci-fi story and fancy graphics will make up for lame gameplay that has 'old school appeal' well.. there is nothing old school about it.... it is just lazy design.

Quake 4 is crap!
Yes, it's rubbish. I said so when it first came out. I felt the same way about Doom 3 too.
F.E.A.R. is miles better.
If you're looking for a great, cheap shooter. Chronicles of Riddick was recently rereleased for a tenner and can probably be found for a little less if you shop around.
Id stopped making original games?
Why, I had no idea!
(After all these years, I still can't stand the reasons behind the disappearance of that Commander Keen installment slated for 1992 -- apparently they were considering doing it later on, too, with a design similar to Mario 64. Then Mario 64 was unveiled so they stopped and went back to boring old Doom. Again).

The name is Noel. Perhaps you should get a copy of Tony Hawk Teaches Typing.
I don't know about you, but I can enjoy killing in just about any game I'm given. FEAR, Quake 4, Doom 3, etc. are all fun to me. I consider Painkiller to be the best mindless slaughter game of them all though. With Manhunt following closely behind.
You're all violent people and you should be killed. ;P
Chronicles of Riddick rocked, already done that thanks.
Actually I'm a huge FPS fan since Doom, got and played nearly all of them. Just that Quake4 seem well ... boring and "unclear" as to where I was and what I was suposed to be doing (maybe I was too tired).
Painkiller was a great game, but at the end of the day it was like Serious Sam (also fab) which was like ... DOOM of course. Why? Hordes, it's all about hordes. Too many modern games focus on a few tough baddies with good AI instead of a roomful of grunts wanting to be mashed with a blast from a rocket launcher hehe.

Duh! i dunno... i had a lot of fun with it... come on now, what did you expect it to be... but i guess it did let a few people down... anticipation can be a bad thing :)

It's not crap. It's boring, repetitous and formularic, but not crap. What I've played of it (admittedly not much) is miles better than DOOM 3.
Typical of Raven to have to be the one to showcase Ids technology. But it seems that's pretty much all they do these days. Now lets get a new Jedi Academy using the D3 engine, yeah!
F.E.A.R. is a realy good shooter, but all that horror stuff really lets it down storywise.

I thought Doom 3 was much better than Quake 4 ... which just seemed much more generic and didn't even have dynamic shadows that react to your flashlight.
yup..Quake4 and Doom3 both is pure crap...from my point of view, Half Life 2 rulez...
The name is Noel. Perhaps you should get a copy of Tony Hawk Teaches Typing.
Perhaps you should let up on an obvious and very easy typo.
"The name is Noel. Perhaps you should get a copy of Tony Hawk Teaches Typing."
You poke fun, but there is Typing of the Dead which is a remake of House of the Dead where you learn to type. :-)

I am fully aware of this. Tony Hawk Teaches Typing was more of a joke my cousins and I came up with -- "Now grrrrrind to the R!" Stuff like that.
I'd patent the idea of using skateboarding to teach children the alphabet, but I somehow doubt anyone will use it. And even if they do, I expect it would be a disastrous failure.

Painkiller's got my vouch here, haven't had so much fun playing an FPS in that genre style since Doom2. Now if only it had multi-player co-op....would love see'ing I & others team-up and pile-drive multiplaye waves of monsters into the walls with that wooden-stake-gun thing at the same time.
Anyhow, onto topic, my bro has Quake4 here (DVD edition, since he also wanted the Quake2 expansions included with it, which we could never find back in the days), and from what I've played from it, it's just a better Doom3 single-player game (which I only ever played just for the atmospheric setting/graphics, the shooting was lame to me, never enough targets at once to fire at) with a rehashed online gameplay system from Quake3 iirc.
I don't go for these mindless, bland shooters like Quake and
Doom and Unreal. They're all the same. HL2 was neat though.
I should install that again.
FEAR was also very well done, but it really makes my computer
work hard. I have to open the case up and have a fan blowing
in so that the whole thing doesn't lock up. (Yes, I keep my
machine dust-free)

quake 4 is cool. fear was very dull for me anyway and unlayable on my pc where quake 4 runs fine
Actually I prefered Quake 2 to 4 as at least it had different scenery and felt more like an adventure. Perhaps it will get better, I'll give iot another go for sure now I've spent the money on it.
Quake 2 was good, considering I only played it for the first time about 2 years ago (audible gasp). Really love the grenade launcher in it. Just something about it that makes it so appealing to lob grenades around. Plus just the normal grenades are awesome.
It was good also at the time. I like the graphics, the funny sounds etc. It's a neat game, the weapons balance nicely and you can kill the enemies at the start quite easily etc. Its cool.
Quake 4 is crap!
That's quite a sweeping statement from a game developer - I wonder what the id team would think of Easter Bonus ??
Forums are all about sweeping statements. The day I don't hear a sweeping statement is when the Internet shuts down because oil has run out. Anyway the Raven team would realise that their action game is a mindless mishmash and play mine instead for hours, no doubt.
Seriously though, no it's not crap, it's very professional and maybe it's fun if I give it more chance but it didn't grab me at the beginning that's all.

I'll frag you on DM if you ever get remotely good enough to take me on :)
I'm already good at DM since I've played nearly every FPS since Doom :-) Someone once said they were good at Quake 3 and I beat them on EVERY GAME. Someone else challenged me once, claiming they beat all their friends and I beat them 20:0 multiple times. Also some bloke reckonded he could be me with a joypad cos he was used to Halo and other XBox games, needless to say, he didn't last long before he realised the futility of his control method, lol.
However, if you don't use it you loose it, and I'd probably have to train up a bit more. I also find it takes me about an hour to warm up as well. What I'm not so good at is CoD multiplayer, I'm OK, but not great for some reason (IPete2 and Avon will testify to this). Just haven't put enough hours in I guess.

Sounds like an old man waxing poetic about the old days then making sly excuses and slipping away :)
Yeah those halo players... I suspect he didn't realise that the game has auto-aim helper code for joypads on the console.

just more like a busy man. Also online play became too addictive for me. I HAD to stop.
..it is strange how so general things and usually very subjective always going on to personal ... Quake4 is crap, thats how I feel when I play well polish, completely gameplay empty game, and I cant see why should I make any game in order to say as a costumer is something I purcahse bad or good...strange...i said call Muk and nuke them all...

Super Mario Typing as well... Kill those shrooms!!! You poke fun, but there is Typing of the Dead which is a remake of House of the Dead where you learn to type. :-)
well i finnally got the quake 4 demo last night and played it......its not crap...but its nothing to be amazed about either. I thought it was a decent shooter, not quite as jumpy as doom3, not as dynamic as fear, but it was decent....
well I've played it some more, got outside, got into the space craft. Didn't take very long, bit easy.
So anyway, I still don't like it. I think I don't like the Doom3 engine, it's all black and shiny with nothing in between. Makes me feel like my eyes don't work properly. Plus all the scenery is so samey you can't make a mental map very easily. Also there is no atmosphere in the game, it doesn't have any real vibe to speak of unlike Quake 2 or other games like Jedi Knight, Call of Duty etc. Sure it has tons of scripting and lots of detailed scenery but it just is missing something, I don't know what, but I know it's missing. In fact there is too much scripting, sometimes I just want more shooting but you just kill a couple, or your buddies do first (annoying), then it's more talk talk or lengthy loading (perhaps I need a defrag).
Anyway I'll carry on playing to see if it improves.

Agree on most of that, except this..
'Cause I didn't get that. So yeah, might want to look into a defrag.

I mean each level takes around 10 seconds or so which is a pain. So anyway I'll defrag. Reloading quicksaves etc. is quick, must be using the RAM thank god.
Q3 was the stuff, but they don't know when to stop
Yeah it still rocks as a multiplayer game but not as a single player one, cos it ain't one really.
Played some more to day to show a friend who game up games a couple of years ago because he thought they were all the same and boring. He wasn't impressed.

It starts on EASY mode. The default difficulty is easy and the one up is VERY easy. The developers stated this... Put the difficulty up.
Wonder if I can do that mid-game. I'll check.
