The demographic has more than likely changed since the original publications by IDC and IGDA some years ago. In fact this article is suggesting that the female player is aged 25-35, the original publications quoted 65% of females over the age of 35.
Good 'no real data' story there.
It says nothing about how much men and women spend on video games, just that women mostly play casual free games. This is an odd omission since the article is based on a study by the Consumer Electronics Association.

so the stat in my newspaper was pretty good then for an off the cuff estimate (based on information absorbed by osmosis).
Very ancient info. If you're in the scene, you are already clued up about your target market.
Even knowing this, it is unlikely you will make games to suit the target market without a lot of practise. Our own partners are often the worst people to have judging our games. They do not judge impartially either.
