Torque SE, Truevision, or C4 Engine

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Torque SE, Truevision, or C4 Engine

Thinking about buying one of the above engines but I cant decide which one, What do you guys think is the best?

Torque

Playing with Torque now.... it's worth a try.

Knows nothing with TrueVision, and C4 runs slow on my PC... so I can't really recommend them.

There're many free ones like OGRE, Irrlicht, kjAPI.... may you look at them first?

I vote for Truevision based upon the support I've received and the stability of the product.

Torque SE hasn't been proven in use yet.
Same goes for C4.

C4 is slow. Nice features, but it's so slow that I couldn't use half of them. Truevision seems faster and with better features than Torque SE, but I haven't spent much time with Torque SE. What I like best about TV3D is being able to use BMax, but that doesn't apply to anyone else until the next beta is released ( counting the days ) so I can release this damn thing and finally get some proper testing done and any remaining bugs fixed.

Power render (not on the list), but very handy, few games done with it and published by Activision, and price range same as TV3D..

what kinds or games are you gonna be making Leiden... i think that that is a key factor in the choice of your tools...

i've licensed Torque... and it has a lot going for it, for sure, after all, it's an already built game that is highly moddable, so you don't wind up having to make your own rain, clouds, character, gun ballistics... all fine, if you're gonna make a fps... anything else is most likely gonna require you delve into and mod the engine code... scripting or c++ you're in for a lil bit of work before you're gonna be productive... the hardest part is getting the information you need... but there is a big and helpful community, and 2 books, so...

TV3D is a more established dev environment... soild looking api... less of a moddable affair and more of a coding affair... no prebuilt game here to mod... amazingly fast from what i've seen...

i've looked at the C4 engine... has promise... but, like someone above said, seemed kinda slowwww...

good luck L...

hey NA, what's your experience been with Power Render...

Truevision3d 6.5 ... BY FAR

Another vote for TV3D - just migrated there myself

torque has one of the worst art workflows of any engine i sick to death with it. map2dif sucks!

Pete

How much is this truevision? I couldn't find a price for it on the site

Truevision 6.2 is free for non-commercial use, but you have to use C#, VB, C++ or Delphi with that, and only certain compiler version will work anyway.

Truevision 6.5 works with BlitzMax ( well it *will do* when I can release this wrapper ) and a wider selection of compiler versions ( even Dev C++ soon ) and is available to use at no additional cost when you buy any commercial license. Commercial licenses cost $150 USD for a single product license ( you make one game you intend to sell ) and $500 for an unlimited product license ( make as many as you want. )

So Gabe, I take it you have access to 6.5 and have made a wrapper for your own use, but not allowed/no point releasing it till 6.2 is officially out?

Do you have any idea when it will be out?

Blitz3D and DarkSDK are two engines I particularly enjoy.

I'd rather torque than tv3d.

"What I like best about TV3D is being able to use BMax"

Ooh you are a tease Gabriel. Sounds awesome anyway, just started to look at Truevision with C#, but BlitzMax would be so cool. Good luck

hey Red...well far as I can reach, engine is suited with really good tools, covering all next gen features, physics is integrated, documentation is very well done and precise (one provided with engine after purchase)..no wonder few titles is done by this game creation tools and published by Activision..and yes, price for commercial license is same as one for TV3D (500US$) and unlimited number of products...I like it..

thx NA...

You can always try ants Aurora ogre3D engine. Thats pretty good and uses ogre3D to handle most of the fancy stuff. He has that on sale on the Bmax programming forum.

I wouldn't recommend buying a thing from that guy till he:

a) starts having the respect to spell stuff correctly
b) gets documentation sorted
c) actually has a demo

Never mind "it's coming"... till it's here.

Truevision 3D + C# definitly. 100%. Use nothing else!
Otherwise you are errorneous (in your choice).... but then
who am I? Hahahahah >:D

Ooh you are a tease Gabriel.

Heh, I know, I'm terrible. And I'm itching the get any wrinkles straightened out too.

Anyone who buys 6.2 has access to 6.5 immediately, and yes, I've made a wrapper for my own purposes. I can't release it because you need libraries that will enable you to compile with GCC ( The C compiler which BMax uses ) and those libraries are not publicly available yet. As soon as they are, I'll make any changes/additions required and release the wrapper ASAP.

Do you have any idea when it will be out?

The libraries will be made available when the next beta version is released which could be any time now. I don't know how long till it's not beta any more, but it's already fast, feature-packed, stable and less bugs than a lot of "finished" products, ( Ahem! ) so I wouldn't worry about that. The important thing is to get the GCC libs and then it's ready as far as I'm concerned.

Ahem ... cough ... cough ... Marble Blast Ultra on Xbox 360 ... cough ... sold about 30,000 copies first week ... cough!

30,000? Bloody hell! How much 'proof' do you want? :P

Ahem ... cough ... cough ... Marble Blast Ultra on Xbox 360 ... cough ... sold about 30,000 copies first week ... cough!

How about something in the PC market?

It's pretty shocking that indipendent games are doing so well on a completely locked down game console which, (people claim) has extremely capable graphics hardware.

It makes no sense...
The reason indi games sell so well on the Mac platform is because there aren't many games made available on them.

Does this mean that the 360 has a limited library of games?

Edit:
Oops, it looks like I have attempted to hijack this thread :/
Don't answer that question.

No, it just means that there's a significant amount of 360 gamers that want more than eye candy, IMO.

FMC being redone in Aurora vid.Has a big block of physics blocks and basic AI added this morning :)

Hehe, that's lookin' real good ;)

As for the 360 ... if you get on there you'll see there are real gamers out there who do nothing but play games 24/7. I made a few friends on there ... and they're always on. They have money to spare and they just plain out buy a lot of games. People on PC's have more to do with their machines than play games ... people with Xbox 360's ... well for a lot of them it's a lifestyle so you're going to sell a lot more games.

Might want to cut down on the ...'s, Alessi. You're turning into that Red person.

Yes ... Red has had a ... profound ... impact ... on my ... typing style.

Often times I find myself going back and taking out all the "...". That time I didn't!

very good Jeremy... very good...

soon they all will see the light of the triple stop...

... and elightenment and peace shall reign eternal.
