Webhost Advice

If anyone can help me it would be greatly appreciated !

Which is better for webhosting, Linux or Windows ?
and what is the difference between the two ?

has anyone ever used fasthosts.co.uk ? Are they any good ?

What are the most reliable webhosts in the UK & US,

As far as the OS'es go. It really depends on if you need ASP support. Most of the time, if you want ASP scripting the host will have you use a windows box. If you want to use any other scripting language you will most likely use a linux box.

There's not much between them really. If ASP is important to you, I'd avoid Linux tho ;)



Price usually. Linux hosting is usually cheaper.



Normally I recommend PowWeb as they're cheap, feature packed and very reliable, but I got an email today saying the management has changed, so I wouldn't want to recommend anything until I've confirmed that the service isn't going to slip. It seems unlikely, as they're really rather huge, but I wouldn't feel right just the same.

And DreamHost would be my second choice after PowWeb.

If we're talking bang up to date hosts (tech wise), then realistically both will offer stable hosting with no clear choice, but......


If you want to use ASP, Access database or VBScript, then Windows hosting is what you'll need. If not, then you're better off going with Linux hosting because in general its cheaper.


I use www.dataflame.co.uk - they're not the cheapest, but they're very reliable and they have 24/7 online help, so if you need a bit of tech help someone is always at hand to chat to. I've been with them for years and won't be swithcing anytime soon.
