What is everyone playing these days?

The games are getting soo much better graphic wise, it'll become soo advance... Look at Crysis, Oblivion... They look soo good. Hehe, can't wait to play those, but back on topic.

So what is everyone playing these's days? I for one have been playing MMORPGs, like Dark Age of Camelot... Guild Wars... and I just started playing a free mmorpg called CresendoRO ( http://crescendo-ro.com ) I think it's a private server of the game Ragnarok Online... But anyhow I won't be playing for long.

Playing helps creativity and game developpement I think :)

Actually, I'm playing more actiony games right now to divert my attention as I cough down as many "Fisherman's Friends" as I can find. (Sore throat for 30 hours now. Finally I can prove that it's not just my hay fever; I've started coughing like mad and it's incredibly painful!!!)

Mainly playtesting a couple of games I have been working on.

Nothing. I'd love to but I'm too busy right now with work. However, I do play the odd Indie game for a few minutes just to check it out. Last game I played was Inca Quest.

Fight Night on 360 mostly ...

I'm playing Battlefield Vietnam and Ski Stunt Simulator. The ski game is really cool, just google it and try to find the downloadable version (there is a java applet one too that doesn't have as many levels), great fun and very addictive....that is if you like physics games.

Other than that I tried out A Tale in the Desert II yesterday. Interesting concept, but I don't think I'll stick with it. I just find most MMORPGs to boring, I lasted about two days in WoW. The only exception I've found to be interesting is Second Life, it doesn't have that idotic level treadmill and there are no boring endlessly repetetive tasks to do, then again it's more of a virtual world than a MMORPG. As a side note I'm keeping an eye on Seed www.seedthegame.com It's supposed to be focused on story and role-play, and I like the setting and style of it, so maybe it'll be something for me.

Oh, I think I've got Rollercoaster Tycoon for PC somewhere, but that's it.

Taito Legends Arcade Pack for Xbox, Capcom Classics for Xbox as well. I like easy to get into instant action arcade games. None of those long and involved plots, half a dozen tutorial levels, sitting through cinematics or any of the other 'features' modern games have which I no longer have the patience or willingness to sit through.

apparently you need pixel shader 3.0 thingy to enable next gen graphics.
hmm controls seem just as bad as angel as darkness, but game is really fun so far and graphically very pretty

The nest gen stuff in Tomb Raider Legend enables SM3, which means more realistic water, soft shadows, higher res textures and HDR. You need a monster of a video card to make it worthwhile (ATI X1800XT or GeForece 7800 minimum with 512MB RAM). The game still looks gorgeous without the next gen content on earlier cards, such as a Radeon 9800.

I disagree about the controls and are nothing like those in AoD. Neither are they the familar set-up of the earlier games, but a more modern set up similar to Prince of Persia, etc. Takes a little bit of time to get used to them, but they work great once you do. I'd recommend using the keyboard and mouse combo.

I want to play that Tomb Raider (currently at 60% of downloading the 520mb demo! and downloading at tragically slow 63k/s)... looks cool, My favourite Tomb Raider has been TR3 so far and I've heard the new one is more like that than any of the others...

Anyway... back on topic...

Currently I'm (re)playing Messiah, MDK2, and Colin McRae rally 2. All still look suprisingly good, play brilliantly and run silky smooth with every single fx switched on full and in high res! Hurrah!

Urban Chaos doesn't work anymore :(

BF2, Eve Online, Edge of Chaos Online, Mario Kart DS are the ones I'm actively playing at the moment, but I still have a pile of unstarted and/or unfinished games that I need to complete before I allow myself to buy any more. I really do want to buy Guitar Hero :)

Nah, I sold them ages ago, way before RE4 came out. I think the 'newest' game I had was Zelda Wind Breaker - or whatever it was called. :P I hardly played it, though. Just couldn't get into it.

wind walker or maker, can't remember. Anyway I finished that one. The 2nd level or something (citadel where you ahve to hide under barrels etc) was quite hard but after that it really was cool, you got to sail around in your boat to all these odd places etc. I'm sure I missed out lots of extras in the a game but it was good. I'd never played a zelda game before that. Actually my copy of the game had the last N64 Zelda game free with it too, that was good too!

Ah, that's the level where I lost interest and gave up. I guess I should have stuck with it a bit longer. :)

I'd never played a Zelda game before, either, so wasn't really 'down with it', from the start.

City of Heroes/City of Villains.. for 1.5 year now.. must..leave....game...alone!!

Eurogamer.net give it 7/10. That's fairly decent.

Just got pikmin and metroid for the gamecube, seen the new tomb raider in GAME today, looked impressive but looks aren't everything are they ??? I can see why pikmin was groundbreaking.....

I really enjoyed Metroid Prime on the GameCube. Great game. I don't usually enjoy FPS type gameplay, either.

Metroid Prime was indeed a great game.

I've been enjoying the occasional blast of Rumble Box, Kisses and Barbarian Roller Rally of late.

Completed both Metroid Primes on Game Cube, great games indeed.

This past week, I have been playing some old DOS based strategy games.

I've been playing the PC version of Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth. Fantastic game!

taumel: I played the Dig demo on a mag CD about ooh 10 years ago and then promptly bought the game. REally neat, finished it too. I've done all those LucasArts adventures.

Kuron: Well would you consider XCOM: UFO and XCOM: Terror of the deep strategy games? They are brilliant, highly recommended. Also of course, Command and Conquer and Red Alert.

I might continue with Quake 4 later. Really I should finish KOTOR or Arx Fatlis first...

It is a great game, found it hard to start with, then easy then hard at the end. Lovely visuals, much better than Quake4 imho.

Yep, the graphics are a treat for the auld eye balls, even on the lowest settings! :)

Wasn't there an "XCOM" for DOS that was an FPS? I have never played the Windows XCOM games, but weren't they 2D PBEMs? Definitely strategy games IMHO and I love PBEMs. However, "Strategy" tends to mean something different to everybody.

Kuron: XCOM: UFO and XCOM: Terror of the deep were DOS ames, isometric, turn-based and are regarded by many as some of the best games ever made, no sh*t. Anyway there may have been an XCOM FPS cashing in on it, but it can't have been any good or I'd have bought it, being a big FPS fan.

Tonight I was mainly playing the guitar and listening to Helen talking about stuff which made two of us happy.

Ah, even back in the DOS days I was mostly buying & playing shareware or indie made games.

I was sitting out under the tree with the wife and my daughter playing the guitar earlier today.

I had a job and not many expenses so I didn't mind buying games from shops (or Special Reserve). Only shareware games I played were Doom, Duke3D, Hexen etc.

When I got back from Aikido I showed my sons how to do backwards rolls and did some Salsa dancing (craply) with them too, then popped the little blighters in bed. Dads are for fun.

I had a job and a lot of expenses, lol. One of the jobs though was a Shareware distributor. I had racks in over 75 retail locations in MD and PA, plus I ran a 16-node BBS. I was exposed to a lot more shareware than the average guy back then.

I have a rather unique taste in games, so few major commercial releases catch my eye. Plus, I prefer to support indie developers over major companies, anyway.

Would like to find a good driving sim game, but not found one I really like yet. LFS got close.

Also interested in games/sims where I can add DirectX content without all the usual frustrating hassles and add ons. Then any game is as good as you can make it.

Try Battle For Middle Earth 2, it is really cool, better than AOE3 IMO.

Yes it's incomplete but nevertheless there is enough interesting reading, for example all the interviews at http://dig.mixnmojo.com/museum/interviews.html or the script for the first version. It's nice reading while listening to the music.

Yes, done by Revolution, right? This was a nice one for a adventure not done by lucasarts. I disliked all the sierra adventures. The best non lucasarts in my opinion is still Broken Sword One. Very good story and dialogues.

im playing Einhander! on my ps1 its great to get a classic game out once and a while. also battlefield 2 a bit

@Taumel: Haven't played many sierra adventures but Beneath a Steel Sky is great. Also, not similar at all, but I totally recomend Ultima VII Part 1 and 2, omg they were great.

I played Ultima 2,3,4,5 and 9. All were great at their time, also the latest one Ultima 9. You only had to play it years after it was released because it was so buggy and hardware hungry when it shipped first. I still find the story/atmosphere in Ultima 9 very dense and better than in recent roleplaying games.

Anyway i'm looking forward to Neverwinter Nights 2 and hope that they improve on the story/quests. At least they promised and hopefully i will have some time then... :O)

Hmm some of the old adventure and roleplaying games really were like good books. They fed your head and were full of ideas! This isn't very widespread in todays games. Only a few ones succeed in this category. I miss those games with well thoughtout story/dialogues...

A lot of the recent roleplaying games are exaggerated and so genre typical facile. I've experienced better, serious and adult like stories when playing paper roleplaying. Same with the newer adventures. They all lack the mind prickeling puzzles.

To be fair you could relativise this, as some of the old games were only great because they were more abstract and therefore left more room for imagination. You also saw those games with virgin child eyes but in the end i would still say that a lot of the old games had more flesh around their bones.

Half-Life-2 was a great game in my opinion. Valve is able to bring this intensive feeling.

Thanks Deux, but a bit too Lord Of The Rings for my taste. Every time I give anything LOTR relaterd one more try I end up asleep. Books films, the lot! It's got to be me, I mean can all those millions of fans be having the same Emperors New Clothes thing at the same time over the same product? Probably not! ;O)

I forgot to say something good in WWII Euro would be more like I'd probably enjoy. Could be a little more modern and still work for me though.

Is that C&C stuff OK on XP these days? I reckon that might be interesting at a push. Was DOS only for the most part back in the day. I got the impression it's being used on rather more current OSs now too.

The Doom Rogue-like is a lot of fun. It's amazing how much atmosphere ASCII games can create.

All versions of C&C play more or less (less) perfectly on XP*.

*C&C Gold/C&C95 only - not C&C DOS, RA1 needs 1.08 patch minimum, RA2 may need updated copy protection. Any questions, either ask me or visit cncworld.org =]

taumel: Well I totally recommend 7, but you'll need DOSBox to run it. Also 8 was great. I did play 9 too and enjoyed it, but not as much as 7 and 8. Also don't forget Ultima Underworld 1 and 2, they are FANTASTIC. I look forward to neverwinter 2 as well, 1 was pretty good, but somehow a bit sterile, I preferred Baldurs Gate 1 and 2, also Icewind dale was not bad, and an old one that was great was PLanescape Tormnent.

I don't own Ultima7...but maybe when i get my hands on i'll remember your suggestion. Wasn't the end of Ultima 9 great? Leaving Raven for... ;O)

Hmm i didn't enjoy Baldurs Gate this much. I like to focus on one or a few characters instead of huge parties which mostly makes the story more intense. Actually i played through Neverwinter with only my thief.

Have you ever played Cruise for a Corpse on the amiga? It's said to be a good adventure but i never played it...

Re: Baldurs, when you got into the fight tactics of having a part it really was very good. What first annoyed me about Neverwinter was you had absolutely no control over other party members/animals so you had to open the door to the room full of monsters even if you were a wizard andyou had a rock solid warrior in your party. This was dumb.

Use one party member and you won't run into these kind of problems...

yeah but if I'm a wimpy wizard, I'd still rather some other fool opened the doors and took the brunt of the attack while I did my jiggery pokery in the background.

lol, actually I used to always make a warrior character because I couldn't face not being able to use Uber-Weapons that I found along the way and Helen, my partner, said "you always make warriors, why not be something else" so I was a wizard in Neverwinter, it was good fun, but I miss the big axes!

I know this problem, i encountered the same with the thief: You can't always play a thief...Try something different...

But in the end i stayed with the thief as i get the most fun out of this class... :O)

I like the ultima character "Avatar) as you can train in combat and magic :-)

I like the thief as it never tries to stay out of trouble and even if he/she would he/she wouldn't succeed. Well, at least the way i play it... ;O)

This week ( should I ever get ten minutes to myself ) I shall mostly be playing Sanitarium, which I recently found for £1 in a pawn shop. Mint condition CD's and manual too ( box was tatty ) and since I never managed to find a shop selling it when it was originally released ( ~9 years ago ) I'm delighted to finally snag it.

I may also see what Silent Hill 4: The Room is like. I loved Silent Hill 2 and 3 but I've been warned that 4 may disappoint me. Got that for £3 in the same pawn shop.

I just finished Dark Cloud 2. Been looking for that game for a while, and I finally spotted it on a used game rack last week. It was disappointing; good game, but not nearly as good as I'd been led to believe (eg. all random dungeons, wtf.)

..I'm playing with Serious Sam2, and i tell you, even its my friends with whom I use to work on first Serious sam, i am deeply dissapointed...nothings changed..AI mods is same, just diffeent characters and environment...physics is not there as I can see (even they claiming that they using it) becouse everythings looking pretty much as prerendered animations, reflections is crappy, water is more than crappy, etc..oh man..I'm shocked..I was so proud about Serious Sam 1 before 7 years, and now..I'm very dissapointed..

Yep, I've heard good things about Act Of War on ea's c&c forums =] Apparently the game must have been made by a bunch of hardcore C&C fans...

The 'collectors box set', aka The First Decade, is shite. If you have all/most of the games allready don't bother. It's easier to get some of the original games working and TFD introduces numerous bugs. But if you don't have the whole set, community made fixes for TFD are abundant (sp?).
