Out of this World
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Out of this World hunh, though it was called Another World. I played the other Delphine games, Flashback (completed on Megadrive) and Fade to Black (completed on PC)
It was called both, it had different names in the UK and US.
Brilliant, brilliant game.
yes... i remember this one... one of the best of it's time...
Another World over here... i was always amazed at how they got all that game on one floppy...

The original game was Another World, and the Flashback was the sequal.
Now if only I could figure out how to beat the dang game. =\
Was too good to resort to a FAQ to beat.

King of the kings. The best game ever.
With Doom of course.
With Doom of course.
Was there suppose to be a difference? The intro for this game looks exactly the same as it does on the SNES version and watching it now, its looks exactly the same as the one on the mobile cel-phone version...
AngelDaniel: Flashback wasn't the sequal, it was just similar... from wiki "The 1992 game Flashback, or the 1995 game Fade to Black (both also from Delphine), were often mistaken for sequels because of similar gameplay and graphics. However these games have nothing to do with Another World, except said similarity in graphics or gameplay, and had completely different stories."
Figure of speech ;-D
Yes, Flashback is not a sequel. There was a "Heart of the Alien" semi-sequel included with Sega-CD version of the game (second best version in my opinion) where you played the Alien , lesters friend. Not as good as AW, but still worth to check out.
I love the music in the game because I originaly heard it through 286 built-in speaker... But it was loud and clear. I really like sega-cd cd quality music by the same composer, but it's slighly different (only a true fan will spot the differences), so it's second on my list...
NOW, ANYONE WHO HAVEN'T PLAYED THIS GAME YET SHOULD GO ON EBAY OR SOMETHING LIKE IT AND GET ONE!!! GET EITHER AMIGA, PC OR SEGA-CD VERSION (Sega-cd rom is available from The Underdogs, but I can't be too sure how legal it is - althou TU claim to be legal) AND ENJOY THIS ONE OF THE GREATEST GAMES OF ALL TIME!!!
Sorry for all caps, but the game is THAT good! Not to mention a load of 'first' achievements.
EDIT:
Crap! The video posted above is from sega-cd version!!! I'll try to digitize the original...
EDIT 2:
Couldn't capture it with the newest version of dosbox - captured AVI don't play... Even with videolan!!! What the... Oh well... :-(

Brilliant game !
Fade to Black was the sequel to Flashback however, I recall.
At the end of Flashback you go into stasis after blowing up the alien planet, and in Fade to Black you wake up in a cell after being captured by the aliens. But yeh Another World was just about some guy who had a flash car and was messing about with particle accelerators...
Oh yeh, if anybody has a GBA flash cart, the original creator ported the game over and you can download the ROM legally for free somewhere on t'interweb...(google it)

There was also a russian Flashback-clone (It was also released for foreign countries) "Bermuda Syndrome".
It was pretty good if you ask me.

And if you're really thirsty for more, Ben Croshaw (maker of pretty decent amateur adventure games) used the adventure program to make a Flashback-esque horror-suspense game called '1213' which is quite cool:

I remember these games on the amiga. were amazing at the time :) and still pretty cool looking today :)
game called '1213'
Thanks for pointing this out, it is really good. It's good but not all that good. Due to it being made in AGS (which is an achievement) the controls are VERY unresponsive (and that's the game's major downfall).
Fade to Black was Flashbacks sequal

Did anyone ever play this. I thought it was pretty awful (and I was playing it on release)

Fade to Black was Flashbacks sequal
I think it's pretty obvious due to
1) Other person said it and nobody jumped in saying "NNNNOOOOOO!!! IT AIN'T SOOOOOOO!!!"
2) Well, the names are kind of similar...
3) It's all in the cutscenes!!!
Of course it's a sequel... A 3d one this time... I kind of liked it. It's no Flashback, but it was a cool game... Action-puzzle in 3d (Although it didn't really use it's 3d space. Everything in this game could be recreated in 2d). Camera angles were bad sometimes, but it was a solid game.
I finished Fade to Black and thought it was OK actually, bit annoyting at times. Ran well on my PC which was good for the time. It wasa software 3D game like Doom.
Haha Fade to Black, I actually went around just to see all the death scenes. :)
I played Fade to Black and enjoyed it quite a bit. It was a welcome change from Doom at time because it had a story.
why do sequels never live up to the originals ?
sometimes they do:
Aliens
Temple of Doom
Terminator 2
Superman 2?
George Bush ;-)

Actually, game sequel are very often better than the original.
Movie sequels usually suck, unless they doing a sequel in a different key (Evil Dead Trilogy) or just give you more of the same (Indiana Jones, Back to the Future...)

Temple of Doom? Hang your head in shame, Grey. :P
I second that!

The author has released a Hi-Res Collectors edition.
Plays exactly like the original too. Great stuff!
Price: 7 euros , £4.83 , $8.47

I played that demo this morning - its VERY short. I'd finished it in less than two minutes. I liked Another World but I don't think I'd pay even that small amount to play it again.
Flashback, on the other hand....

sorry :-( It's OK though isn't it, common. "Kali MA!
It is a painfully short demo, but it's a painfully short game, IIRC. I still think it's worth a fiver though. It's such a beautifully put together game. One of the things I like best about it is I can't imagine how I could code it. Most games I can see roughly how I could go about it, but Another World is just so damn varied that I can't imagine how he wrote it without hardcoding practically everything.
These weird, wonderful, quirky, imaginative yet very short games are almost always French, aren't they?

Funny thing is, that (apart from 'short') could be used to describe French Cinema. Some French films are absolute crackers, with a very different flavour to films made anywhere else in the world. I guess it's just a cultural thing. and they have hot birds in sometimes. Anyone seen Wasabi yet, great funny file with Jean Reno (with that accent char over the e)
Well when i was a kid I couldn't get passed the first level. But I just bought the 'new' version and I am well into it now.
Has anyone played Heart of Darkness? It was by the same auther (the game he made after Another World) It looks pretty cool.

try heart of alien, its a sequal to another world but you play as the alien and its set after your escape in the first game (sega cd only)
I thought Another World was the best
the sequels weren't as good even though the
graphcis were better ...
the original was the best ..

Another World is great and Hearth of the Alien is probably the worst, but it wins a lot by actually ading on on the original game (Like the intro, outro and some other great cutscenes).
The remake is pretty good - they even have the original music instead of enchanced sega-cd tracks. I'm not sure about the enchanced backgrounds - I go for a 'classic' feel.
The demo is short, but i think that it's targeted to people who had played it before and the first level is a perfect place to see that nothing was changed really and it's exactly the same game played at a higher resolution.
2 boomboom:
Heart of the Alien wasn't made by Eric Chachi. He was involved only at the first stages of development, but he didn't really designed anything. And there's this absolutely horrible thing that happed at the end of the HotA that just kills the game for me... Sorry, but it's true. When you finish both AW and HotA (in that order) you'll get what I'm talking about...
I'll buy the remake just to support it. But I already have dos, sega-cd, 3do and amiga versions of it. ;-)

IF anybody wants to play Another World in hi-resolution on your PC, the original creator has remastered it so you can do exactly that...although you do have to pay a princely sum of 7 euros...not bad for a classic game though.

Thank you very much, but it just happens that we know about this already - look several posts above. ;-)
I know this is a relatively old topic, but does anyone have any source examples of good ways to do vector-based graphics with hiarchy of parts? I tried to do it and am having much trouble. I know I could just continue using sprites or do a 3d sidescroller, but I really liked the style of OotW and I am interested in creating a similar polygon game engine that can be used to make other games sort-of on the fly. By the way, the end of HotA broke my heart. I almost cried. :(
I believe there are some functions in the code archives that provide examples of accomplishing this.
For instance, here's a B3D one:

Thanks for the response. Is there a method for filling closed vectors? I couldn't find anything in the api about any sort of filling except for predifined shapes. I hope it doesn't require pixel-plotting.
Thanks,
Joe

If you know Python (a free language that's somewhat of a cross between c# and BlitzMax), here's a library dedicated to 2d vector graphics...
http://louhi.kempele.fi/~skyostil/projects/pyamanith/
It's based on the "Amanith" library, which could probably be ported to BlitzMax if they managed to port it to Python.
