Beware of gimmick sites out there that promise a lot for very little and "questionable" services like Powweb that ask for photocopies of your credit card (fraud waiting to happen and a direct violation of the merchant accounts they agreed to in order to accept credit cards).

Where do they ask for a photocopy of your credit card? I, Gabriel, Amon, and a friend of mine (she doesn't come here) are registered with them (last I knew) and I somehow doubt any of us have experienced this credit card photocopy thing.. I certainly haven't.

As for Powweb, to be honest, they have delivered on everything they offer. Support is good (I typically get responses to questions in an hour or two, by which time the problem is usually fixed) and they offer a lot of services and advice.

I am glad they work for you. I have never used them myself because the "photocopy of your credit card" clause scared me away. Under no circumstances should anybody EVER provide a photocopy of their credit card to anybody! This is something I would never risk.

In the real world, most "credit card fraud" is via theft of the actual card or identity theft where somebody is getting new cards under you name. In either case, the "fraudster" would have physical possesion of the card and be able to provide the needed photocopy or fax, so it is a futile clause to begin with.

Sadly, in this case, Powweb's weird "clause" destroys any credible praise users may give. Nobody in their right mind would ever give a photocopy of their credit card to anybody.

Why don't you tell them that? Certainly didn't bother me, since I'm not going to send them a photocopy of my (parents') credit card(s) even if they ask.

If you know what you will and will not do, then there's pretty much nothing stopping you from doing the former.

That IS the mainstream acceptable way of dealing with the issue. Many other webhosts ( dunno why Webhosts in particular, but there you are ) will ask for a photocopy of your credit card if they are dubious over the transaction too.

I don't see the problem. If you don't wanna do it, and they ask you to ( unlikely, since they didn't ask me or anyone else I know using them apparently ) then don't do it and go elsewhere.

GoDaddy are great for domains, but seem to be horrible for webhosting. I've heard nothing but bad things about their web hosting, and nothing but good things about their domain hosting, so it doesn't seem to be a general anti-GoDaddy bias.

Yes indeed. Here in the USA, if you contact the consumer fruad division for the attorney general's office in any state, they will be glad to tell you that you should never give anybody a photocopy of your credit card.

But, there are plenty of stupid and gullible people out there that would do it and then wonder why they get ripped off.

That IS the mainstream acceptable way of dealing with the issue.

Yes, in the USA. I've lost count of US Companies who have asked for just that from me. I don't have a fax machine, so they lose my business, but I don't see a problem with it.

I find that very hard to believe, considering several US consumer guides have it listed as a recommended anti-fraud measure.
