Yes, I recall the excitement as I unwrapped the same block of wood I got every year. The same faked - 'Great - what is it this year?'. My parents thought it was great - one year it was a ship, another a car, another a plane. Although, it was never a games console.

Strangly enough, I got a NES for my 13th birthday and was estatic about it. I reacted somewhat similar to that kid (minus a bit of craziness).

I was very anxious to play Zelda!

My first experience with the genre was the IBM pac-man game, 3-Demon. Next came the Catacomb series that I still consider to be better than Wolfenstein.

Wikipedia says there were earlier games like Spasim and Maze War, both of which I was not aware of. Looks like YOU got ME ;)

what about Dungeon Master? That was first person, just not 360 degrees. There were some first person Maze games on the BBC Computer too.

I came from the generation that thinks it stems from Wolfenstein primarily (if there is such a generation), although I think games like Doom, Strife, and Duke Nukem 3D (and Quake, of course, but it had a jump-start thanks to its predecessors) really gave it the boost it needed to become as popular as it is today.

Then came Unreal and the highly overrated Half-life and it sortof exploded, I suppose. Shame Daikatana didn't live up to the hype. Oh well, just goes to show that one game that sells loads doesn't make you a game design God (Romero's hair.. god save us).

half life wasn't overrated at the time, it was cool. I've played them all since wolfenstein3D.

My first was 3D Monster Maze on the ZX81. Then Driller on the Spectrum and later on Amiga. But in terms of First Person Shooter (TM), I'd say my first was Corporation on the Amiga, rather than Wolfenstein or Doom.

I never reacted like that when I was a kid, because I always pretty much knew what I was getting before I actually got my gifts.

Except this year. This year I didn't give my dad a list and told him I wanted to be surrpised. Boy was I ever. I got stuff like jiffy pop, a t-shirt with an eagle on it, and one of those glowing spinning laser etched 3D crystal things.

Yeah, so... that's the last year I want to be "surprised".

If I had behaved like that my parents would have smacked me, and rightfully so.

It's an N64. The video I saw recently was clearer than this and you could make out what was on the box :-)

When I got my N64 for Christmas back in the day it wasn't quite like that... but I found a rock inside the box and no N64... my dad had laugh... :)

I think i would of reacted exactly like this had I gotten the original Gameboy way back in the day....instead i got some eletric mini car race track set. Family thought it was more "productive" than the Gameboy. Shows them how much they really knew :p
