DVD drive problem?

My DVD drive (Hitachi GD-7500) has started stuttering really badly. Both in DVD movie playback and in normal file reading, the whole system stutters, even just mouse movement. Any ideas?

Maybe try cleaning the laser with one of those cleaning disk kits?

Your DVD drive is not running in DMA mode.

You can try manually setting it back to DMA mode but you might as well save yourself 60 seconds work by rebooting into safe mode, opening Device Manager and removing all instances of 'IDE ATA/ATAPI' stuff.

When you (immediately) reboot into Windows it will redetect your IDE devices and, barring a real fault with your cabling or drive(s), everything will once again me in the land of DMA.

How do I do this? I remember having to set this before but I can't for the life of me find it again.

I thought I just found it but I can't fix it. In Device Manager under IDE controllers, there's primary IDE controller and secondary IDE controller. In primary, under Advanced Settings, there's Device 0 and Device 1. Device 1 current transfer mode says Ultra DMA Mode 6. Device 1 says current transfer mode = Not Available. In secondary IDE Channel Properties, under Advanced Settings, Device 0 current transfer mode says Ultra DMA Mode 1, and Device 1 current transfer mode = PIO Mode (even though I tried changing the Transfer Mode to DMA If Available and then restarting - it still says PIO Mode).

I know when I first had this computer I had to change something to DMA mode to get the DVD working and it was fine.

Okay, sorted it by deleting the stuff in Safe Mode. Didn't seem to let me change it manually.

mrtricks: I know you can manually select DMA Mode, but I also know that it resets back to PIO mode when you reboot. This is why I said 'save yourself 60 seconds work' by going through the Safe mode procedure.

What happened? You didn't listen and you ended up having to do what I said anyway :)
