Tutorial Video Software?

You know those tutorial videos you see? Like the vids on Lynda.com and software-specific tutorials with someone using the application and speaking into a microphone to explain what they're doing. I'm looking for software recommendations for making those. Price is an issue, but is not the only issue.

Ask smiff. He's done one of those vids for PaceMaker, I think. In fact, I'm sure he has. :)

I have used Lotus ScreenCam ($90), not sure if it's still available though.

I don't know if it'll produce what you want, but I'm a fan of Camtasia.

I`m pretty sure Smiff once told me that he uses Camtasia too.

I'm assuming you all mean Camtasia Studio, which is $300, a bit more than I had planned on spending. It does look very good though, and I particularly like the flash export, which avoids codec issues. Might just be worth the money.

I don't think I paid that much back when I got it. You might be able to get a copy second-hand off eBay or similar as long as you can get the seller to ensure license transferral. I doubt it would make much difference where you get it.

I know my version of Camtasia doesn't support Flash output, so maybe that's why the price has gone up. In any case, I think Camtasia was the best in terms of video capture when I got it, and I don't think anyone has outdone them yet.

Yes - I use Camtasia - its the best app I've found for doing this type of thing and has lots of output settings and formats. I am using version 2.0 which does both wmv and swf. I think it's currently at version 3.0 and you can download a fully functional (including export) 30-day trial version from :
