Internet In New Zealand

This is technically related, but I do apologize for going a bit off base, but I think I remember Blitz being NZ based. Anyway, Is it true you must pay for bandwidth used in New Zealand and for a small group of people this can cost upwards of $3000 US? Here in the US we can pay like $80 and use as much bandwidth as we want.

Also, you dont have 11x17 paper???

11 x 17 whats? We use A4 paper that is 210 mm x 297 mm.

As for broadband, who cares, it's not like broadband makes your education system any smarter etc.

That particular scenario sounds unreasonable (unless we're talking 10Mbit fibre connections), but it is true that New Zealand have rediculously bad Internet compared to everywhere else. The 512/512 connection with no traffic limit I currently have is about 3 times as expensive as the theoreticly similar line I had in Denmark, I get disconected regularly and the 512 Kbit is not a guaranteed bandwidth (ie, it can be [and usually is] much lower). Downloading a Linux ISO - forget about it.

I'm from Iceland (though I don't live there) and there you have to pay for bandwith from most ISP's, with one recent and happy exception. It's pretty lame. My parent's get like 1gb of free bandwith and have to pay for anything beyond that. It can get quit expensive if you're up/downloading 200gig a month.

Don't know about New Zealand, but like Iceland it's a rather isolated island so laying cables across becomes kind of expensive. When do we get affordable fully global (satellite) internet. I want to be able to surf other things than just waves in the middle of the atlantic. :-)

I'm in the uk and for the high price of 30 quid, (Roughly 50-60 dollers) I get 40gb of bandwidth.
Any more and they'll send the police round with a battering ram, tear gas and a rope to tie me up with.

Well, I'm about to go Broadband here in NZ.

I haven't really looked at it before due to cost but Telecom here has recently made it more cheaply available - at last. They've been dragging the chain and now that they've finally done a little bit of catch up, you'd think it was the second coming what with all the lame advertising they've been flooding the media with.

By the way, they make +$700,000,000 NZD profit annually from a country of 4,000,000 people. They have a monopoly effectively.

They suck, literally. Their CEO makes $2,000,000NZD a year. The bitch.

Im on broadband, 3.5MBPS with a 10GB Cap and it only costs like $59.95.

I pay £30 and get:

Cable TV
Telephone
4mb Internet connection, unlimited bandwidth.

We are paying about $4500 a month for broadband internet for a office of about 8 people in New Zealand. We aren't even a technology based company, but they use the internet to check email and send us documents and accounting information .

I had to quickly check mine to make sure. We're with NTL and I checked their broadband - 1 and 2 MB are unlimited bandwidth but 10MB is 75GB per month. I'm guessing, as I've had no problem with downloading stuff, that were on either 1 or 2. Fast enough for me anyway.

Is its just documents and emails then you should just get a basic broadband connection such as the Xtra Go pack. Then share it between all the computers, It only costs like $39.95.

I live in SOUTH AFRICA (ranked as one of the most corrupt countries in the world) and have to use a 3g data card with a speed of 384kbps - cost equivalent £50 and capped at 500meg. The corruption is so bad over here that when they interview the so called people running the goverment owned company called TelKom, they basically tell the interviewer to bug off and be thankful that they are even prepared to offer internet connection at all.

Telkom make BILLIONS in profit each year, yet internet is unavailable to a least 90% of the people of South Africa.

After having been in South Africa I can vouch for that being wholly true, sadly.

Ok, I looked at the xtra go pack and now I'm wondering why we are paying so much. Heck the 71$ plan would be godsend comapred to the $4500 I'm paying a month now. Perhaps they are taking advantage of a US company.

If they're in Auckland, they can get (relatively} cheap fibre from the Skytower. If they're really close, they can get wireless too.
