My God PC 3D graphics are getting freakin incredible.
This is from the guys who brought us Farcry. Absolutely stunning. All we need now is a way to directly project images onto our retinas for total immersion.
Will definitely put large egos in their place. Who needs UT2007!

Now THAT would be cool! :)

I had an idea for that. Basically, you wear a headset that would have special lights on them (you wouldn't see the lights) that would have the screen projected onto the headset's goggles, and the sound would just be headphones attached to said headset. However, projectors have the problem of being additive, so you'd never get truely black values.
I'd prefer to just have implants, honestly.
As for Crysis, looks good, but I somehow doubt it'll play very well. Far Cry was bad enough in that regard.
FarCry was stunning in terms of AI and graphics, but as a game it was quite lame.
They should have released it for free as a tech demo to sell their engine :P
CryoEngine2 does look amazing. It shows us how nice HalfLife 3 will probably look while running 3 times faster.
Once again, it gave me that giddy "OMG It looks like real!" feeling, to the extent that I almost felt like the guy was killing real people.
I'm sure that will wear off quickly... especially when we realize that all the animations are boring, premade sequences, those trucks that smash through buildings drive like canoes, very few buildings can actually be driven through (80% of which have a much less spectacular smashing effect), there is nothing within these buildings to break, there are only 3 voice clips per character, and health packs are not both present and invincible.
That's impressive! I have to learn about "realtime ambient maps" now. I haven't got a clue how you'd implement that.
Motion blur I could care less about, but in that same scene they had the guy running past ferns whose leaves were actually deflected by him and sprang back into position after he passed, and that was really cool. I haven't got a clue how they do that either, unless they can do it with vertex shaders. I mean you can't even update a somewhat highres terrain mesh in realtime in Blitz, so those vertices must be being moved by the card.
The soft shadows were nice too. They kinda looked like zbuffer shadows, but I'm not sure if they've solved all the problems with those yet.
As for the gameplay, I don't expect anything in that department. FarCry was interesting to me only for the visuals the the free roaming environment.
I thought Far Cray was an excellent shooter. Actually prefered it to Doom 3, Quake 4 and HL2. The AI makes if fun and fairly open ended with a lot of possibilities for strategy. Was even better on Xbox where you could set booby traps and lure the AI NPC's into them.
Didn't care much for the monsters, but all the merc stuff with sniping, and sneaking about causing havok was great :)
It was even better with HDR later on, When I got my 6600GT that was the first thing I did, play it through with HDR on.
looks amazing, cant wait for this on my xbox 360
Far Cry was the best FPS on the PC, better then Doom3, Q4, HL2 by FAR. Hl2 was only a physics game IMO..
Far Cry Instincts for the xbox 360 ruled, great game, and Far Cry Instincts Predator which is out today, is damn amazing on the 360
Looks good ... reminded me of Perfect Dark Zero for some reason ... I really like the 'Ambient Maps'. Full shadows are very important ... that's why Doom 3 was so great ... Quake 4 even using the same engine wasn't as cool since it didn't have a flashlight that cast shadows.
..music is great I tell you.. :))

Here's a clue:
http://download.nvidia.com/developer/GPU_Gems_2/GPU_Gems2_ch14.pdfCrysis does look nice... sort of soft and full solution, not just bits of reality like dynamic lights with on/off shadows in Doom3. Crysis looks pleasing to the eye and quite "fotorealistic" - at least in hype-videos and stills. We'll see how much they'll have to downgrade the visuals for the actual game.
I can't find any articles on this realtime ambient maps thing. I think Crytek made up a term again just like they did when talking about normal maps in the last cryengine.
..hey Swift, I think its time to upgrade your system with such a feature... :))
Far cry was a great shooter, the odd boring bit or too difficult bit, but generally cool.
OK, it looks hot. If it plays good, I'll get it, uh and a new PC probably.
btw direct retina projection has been working for about a decade. Commercialisation should be close

Isn't that what a monitor does?
I saw this video at the GDC. What you have to keep in mind is that they will show you the very best demo they can, which may or may not run in real-time. If they show you a small room being lit with dynamic light, it is because that is the largest area their engine can handle. If they show a guy running by and knocking into a bush, you will probably see the same bush animation occur 100 times in the game. The "volumetric clouds" looked like sprites to me, and the "realtime soft shadows" were just a projected texture. Nice artwork, but this is not exactly revolutionary.
The only thing that caught my eye about this video was the resolution of leaves in the foreground. If the game does ship like that, it will be nice. But "bigger textures" isn't exactly a catchy BS graphics feature, is it?

... and to detect the shape of your lens (in your eye) to then update the project depth-of-field so that you can focus on stuff, thereby avoiding the 'we are projecting an image of a screen in front of your face' problem, which is a major hinderance to the immersive experience. Do this in less than about 12 milliseconds? Hmm.
I'm guessing there are (or shortly will be) a number of patents covering possible methods of detecting the current distortion of your eye's lens.
Realtime ambient thingie is exactly what Doom 3 and Quake 4 (quake especially) were lacking. The unnatural lighting distracted me the whole time I was playing.
