Thanks, but the reason I'm asking is because I link to one of his tutorials from my web site on this page:

If the site is just down temporarily, I can leave the link alone, but if the site is dead or moved, I'll need to edit my page.

Does anyone know if he is still around here? Is he dead, in prison, on Mars?

You'd be amazed how common that is.

When domains expire and the original owner doesn't renew during the grace period, they will be re-released into the pool, and will be available again for re-registration by the general public.

There's sites that keep track of these domain names that are going to be available again soon.

There's a whole bunch of outfits that automatically monitor those kind of things. They'll do a google search on the domain name in question, and any domain that gets a few hundred hits (=links from other websites) is pretty much guaranteed to be scooped up by a squatter, who uses it as one of those fun 'search' or advertise pages, essentially hijacking all the traffic for people following links on these other sites looking for the legitimate traffic.

Which does highlight how important it is to renew in time when you care about your domain. Just because it's named ifoundpeanutbutterundermycouchandyoucanthaveit.com doesn't make a bit of difference, if you have enough references & links to your site, it's commercially appealing for these shady outfits to spend the ~6 bucks on re-registering it in your place. Of course, they'll charge you a whole lot more if you would like to buy it back...

(Worked at an ISP, and seen plenty of people get bit by this after they ignored the umpteen emails & phonecalls that they really really should renew their domain before it's too late. Then of course it's 'our fault'.)

Demonstar closed it's doors a few months back.
