Making shortcut without creating a menu item

Is this possible? I need a hidden menu item to use a shortcut. On Windows i just assign it after updating the menu and it's not shown. On OS X i gets shown which is not my intention.

Anyone?

Can't you use SetHotKeyEvent() ?
