Windows XP 64bit Edition is SLOW.

I just got a copy of Windows XP for 64bit Systems and it runs pretty crap like, My system should be fairly capable of running it without any hitches. Anyone else have similar performance problems?

I have the same processor and motherboard as yourself and I havent noticed any problems at all. In fact I'm pretty sure that it runs better than the standrard XP on my machine.

Absolutely no problems here whatsoever. I had it installed for nearly a week before coming to the realisation that running the 64 bit version had zero benefit in terms of speed and a negative net worth in terms of usability (no Canon printer drivers).

I cannot see any point in running XP 64 bit unless you require the use of more than 3.5 Gig of RAM (not many people do).

The lack of drivers and other support for XP 64 is a major turn-off. Vista claims to not come in an especially-for-64-bit version. I read that to mean that it supports 64-bit when installed on a 64-bit capable machine. What impact this has on driver availability I wouldn't begin to guess.

For now, I'll stick to 32-bit and just revel in the fact that it runs faster on my Athlon 3700 than it ever did on my Athlon 1900.

Completely the opposite, I'm afraid. x64 edition is very much faster than XP Pro on my machine. The UI is very snappy indeed and it tends to handle CPU and memory-intensive apps better but I haven't noticed any benefits on games that haven't been written with XP64 in mind (i.e. Far Cry with the 64-bit patch). Drivers aren't too much of an issue - anything that runs on Server 2003 will run on x64 and if the drivers aren't too low-level sometimes the 32-bit ones will work.

Confusingly my PC is almost exactly the same specs as your machine, Leiden: AMD64 3200+, 1GB PC3200 RAM, GeForce 6600GT. The motherboard's a nForce3 chipset running the 64bit drivers.

I experienced extreme slowness with x64 beta 2 release... but I put that down to the beta bit.

Who knows, Ill just head back to Windows XP Pro, Something else weird happened, Any windows I open dont appear on the taskbar, when I minimise it just shows the titlebar at the bottom of the screen above the start button. Also when I try to forward emails it says its out of memory, but task manager reports like 880MB free for use. Retarded...

Thanks to the fact that the majority of hardware devices don't seem to have drivers for XP 64bit, it's kind of a non-issue for most people...

People don't use it because there are no drivers, and there are no drivers because noone uses it. Nice catch-22.

Keep in mind that 64 bit is no magic fix for all your problems. While certain things may be more efficient, it also means that other things now all of a sudden take up twice as much memory, including the overhead of copying those twice-as-many bytes of memory around.

Most programs and stuff are still 32bit and to run them on Win 64bit they have to be emulated, but i might be wrong.

Not emulated, on XP64, 32/64 bit app run native.

AMD x64 does not require that 32 bit software be emulated. Intel IA64 requires emulation to run 32 bit software.

Intel's 64 bit Pentium 4 is really only a 32 bit processor anyway, so nothing special in the way of emulation is required there.

Both CPUs require 32 bit emulation. AMD CPUs run in either 32 bit or 64 mode, not both at the same time... 32 bit programs under x64 are emulated in a similar way that 16 bit programs were emulated under x32. The CPU is irrelevant.

The difference between the CPUs is that the AMD acts as a natively 32 bit CPU until that special bit is set.

Back to Windows XP Pro and It feels soo much better. Maybe it was the beta x64 drivers I used?
