About a week ago, I read an article on Slashdot about something called the VEX Robotics System. It was reviewed by the Mythbusters, and they gave it high marks.

Since my birthday was on the 20th, I decided to treat myself, and pick up a starter kit. It was then that I found out there was a 50% off sale at Radio Shack on the stuff, and I ended up purchasing two additional motors so I'd have five plus a servo to work with, a metal kit, a rechargable battery kit, a sprocket and chain kit, and two tank tread kits. I actually purchased some other stuff as well that I returned, but I'll get to that later.

Oh, btw, if you would like this kit, the sale runs through the 1st of April. 50% off is a great deal, because the kit is really expensive normally. It's normally like $300 and $20 per motor, and like $80 or something for the metal kit. It's crazy. But with the sale it's very reasonably priced. For some reason the radio shack website doesn't have the sale listed now, but it's probably cause everything sold out.

Anyway, my review of the kit is that it is pretty fun to play with. It comes with a six channel remote that is like an airplane remote. Very sophisticated. You can control up to eight motors with the remote, through the six channels, because there is a 4wd mode which will drive two motors at once. You could make a 4wd tank with a rotating turret that pivots up and down and rotates, and still have two digital channels (the sticks are two channels each and analog, the other two channels are used via buttons on the back of the remote) left over for a gripper hand, or for firing ping pong balls or whatever else you decide to add.

I had purchased a programming kit, as well as a sonar and some devices which tell you how far a shaft has rotated but since I have so little free time right now, and you're rather limited in the sensing capability area, I decided to return those. The robot is a lot of fun to play with just using the remote.

As for what I've been doing with it, I built a tank very quickly without using the instructions much, and my first stair climbing robot came together pretty fast as well, though it bottomed out on stairs because I had to use wheels in the back because I was only able to get one tank tread kit at first. Now that i have a second kit and the sprocket and chain kit, my next stair climber may well work better than the one the mythbusters built. :-)

I had wanted to make my next robot able to fire ping pong balls like a baseball pitching machine, but due to the metal parts available and the width of the balls not conforming to the distance between the holes in the kit, and being unable to find a long squishy spring to use and having to use small stretchy springs instead, I wasn't able to make it work out. Of course I could just buy an airsoft gun and rig that up to shoot pellets but I don't think my dad would apprciate it if I shot him with those. :-)

So my next robot will be another stair climber but this time with two tread kits. And if I ever figure out a way to fire those ping pong balls this will make a good base for the turret.

I wanted to finish up my robot and take pictures of it before I posted this, but the sale ends soon, and I have a bunch of work to do so it'll probably be a couple days before I can get the new bot done.

Oh and if you get the kit, I reccomend picking up a $5 plastic toolbox from Wal*Mart in the hardware section. There's lots and lots of little nuts and bolts that just get everywhere if you just use the little baggies they give you. And it'll fit all the metal peices and tires too.

And don't toque down the screws too much or you'll snap the hex wrench like me and have to buy another one for $2 at Home Depot. :-)

How does the programming end work? Is it their own fiddly proprietary language, or a full library for C++ or the like?
(Or better yet... a DLL and the ability to run executables for Linux or Windows?)

The Vex stuff is just an elaborate Erector Set. Good stuff, but common.

I bought a basic Stamp 2 from them about 9 years ago. Never really played with it much until just the other year where I brought it to work for me and a co worker to mess with during slow times at work. We have been going nuts with this stuff ever since (just a fun thing to do).

Remote control 'robots' are fun and all, but programming them to move without your invervention is even better. Plus they have a ton of plug-n-play devices you can add in.

It uses something caleld EasyC. So you're basically programming in C. You upload the programs to the microcontroller.

That's all I wanted. Something simple. I would like to be able to program computer vision stuff, but as for the electronics, I don't want to fiddle with that. I just want a plug and play robot. :-)

Well, as I said the Vex kit doesn't have the kind of power you'd need to do anything super interesting. For that I'd need to stick a laptop and a webcam on the thing.

But I've read that one guy managed to build a self balancing robot with it. That's neat. But I decided it's not worth it just to make that assuming I could get it to work. Now if I could make a robot that could recognize different people and greet them by name, that would be something worth putting some effort into. :-)

Not stealing the thread, but speaking of Erector sets, my wife bought me this for Christmas. It is really cool. An erector set for grownups. Might be of interest to others into robots, building cool stuff, etc.

I actually put some thought into an idea similar to this a while ago. Visual recognicion would be complex, but an interesting project.

I remember Big Trak from when I was a kid, although I never had one - I did have a book by Usborne? about programming a robot with basic involving lots of soldering, circuit boards, motors to be hooked up to some old PC from that era.

Yep, Big Trak was cool. The adverts said it could deliver an apple to your dad sitting ten feet away. What they neglected to mention is that it took you an hour and a half to program it to get there without damaging furniture or mutilating the cat.

I had an armatron. We had a couple of robotic arms connected to PC's in a technology class room at school that we used to fight (not part of the curriculum, just when the teacher was away).

I also bought a 'robot building kit'as a kid that was for the Robot Wars TV show. That was a waste of time.

Eric Allard has stated that he is interested in producing and selling the small 'Johnny 5' toy from Short circuit 2, as he still has the originals parts and would just need to massproduce them.

I finished my stair climbing robot... Sort of. Click the pictures to zoom in.





If you notice on the underside, the center bar has two sprockets in the middle. Those had a chain. Those gears allow the front end ot lift, but since it is heavy, it requires a lot of force. Using two sets of compound gears to get the gear ratio up to 25:1 (25 times slower / 25 times more powerful) I managed to get it to lift the front tracks, but the chain, which is plastic survived only a few moments before it snapped in half. I tried again, only to have it snap once more. Clearly the plastic chain was inadequate, though a very elegant solution that saved me lots of axles. I used almost every one as it is. So I had to remove the chain there and place an idler gear on the side and remove one of the small gears so I could use it to drive the idler with the motor directly. That worked pretty well but I wish I had another small gear so I could have had two small gears driving the main gears and axle.

You might also notice on the right side that the track is also missing a chain. That chain too snapped, though this time it was because of the forces places on it when I tried to make the tank pull itself up over the toolbox. It almost managed to do it, but then the chain snapped and I realised there's no way those chains were gonna be able to take the force required. I think I need to use a larger sprocket on the motors to drive the chain so the gear ratio isn't as high, and the motor isn't trying to rotate the chain as fast. Then again maybe my thinking is backward and that would actually put more force on the chain. Either way, I;m ready to throw in the towel on this idea. I had to use every single one of my axle lock nuts to make this, and all five motors so I wouldn't be able to add anything on top like I wanted anyway.

The tread design is pretty cool though. Because I have it higher on one end than the other, the robot has a small footprint, and can turn on a dime quickly as a result.

Anyone tried the Lego Robotics stuff, I think it's called Mindstorm. I believe it comes with some sensors and a small computer/brain. When it came out some guy built a scanner with it. :)

Was kind of tempted as I loved the techno lego as a kid.

There's nothing like Tecnics Lego, to give you a feel for 3D.

However, the programming is done in a click&play environment.

I'd go with a basic stamp as well. I don't own one yet, and if I bought one, I'd propably never get around to testing it because of work and such, but nice it is!

Heheh, I've seen that robotic Aibo dog in the Sony Centre. If you get close and stick out your hand it follows it around as you move. Then when you stroke it's empty faced head, its tail starts wagging and it sometimes rolls over for you to tickle its tummy. Cute and somehow sinister at the same time.

As cool as it though, I'm left thinking, BUT WHY? Why would anyone need a robotic dog? :)

I started building a robot 3 years ago but never got past ripping apart and RC toy. Instead, I ended up opening up
www.speechchips.com and writing firmware for text to speech.

Parallax has some nice stuff but they don't have anything as general purpose as the VEX stuff.
