Creating a games website, where to start?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Creating a games website, where to start?

Hi all, I`ve need to create a website but haven`t a clue where to start. I want an address such as mycompany.com Can someone point me in the right direction on how I can go about doing this for a reasonably small outlay. I have never done this sort of thing before so go easy ;)

Jason.

So you need a .com and a .co.uk address, then some webspace maybe around 50Mb tops (initially) and some decent bandwidth maybe around 1GB per month. Then make a basic page in HTML, upload it and then tweak continually :-)

Personally I use namecheap.com, costs less than $10 per year per domain. They will sell you the domain name but then you'll need a host. If you want a pretty low bandwidth account I can set you up with one on our servers. Provided the bandwidth is not too high I could do this for a very small fee.

Or a paid one like
www.bluehost.com
www.ipower.com
www.poweweb.com

Alternatively, I can park you one for completely free if you want, with basic MySQL/php abilities and FTP access, I'm on close-source project now and I'm not intended to maintain my site atm.

www.webwizcreationsllc.com (which I do all the PHP and more high end code for, as well as their updater system which makes it easy as pie for people who barely know a mouse from a keyboard to update rough basic data on their site) should be able to design and build a site, host it, register the domain, and all the other aspects of having a web site for you, for a very low fee considering that they do everything for you...

In fact... it will cost less than what other web design firms want just to design a basic web site, and they will do anything you want.

www.123-reg.co.uk

Costs about £6 to register a .co.uk domain for 2 years. They also have hosting options starting from £1.59 a month which gives you 100mb of webspace and 1.5gb of bandwidth a month. Not a bad price to start off with. Of course if your site becomes popular then you'll need to buy more webspace & bandwidth.

I used namecheap as per Indiepaths recommendation and it was fine. The hosting is via a friend who sublets (legally) some bigger space. However, Grey Alien games ran out of bandwidth in December due to downloads and screenshots on the Blitz homepage! It was only 750Mb per month then.

OK thanks for the help guys. I will take a look into it.

at least you don't need to hire an artist for your site ;-)

ooh, one more thing, try to get your site up before Easter, link to our game and then market your site to hell and back for maximum traffic :-) pretty please ...

oh and I'll link to your site of course.

I use 123reg too. Has its downsides - very occasionally my site is inaccessible for half a day, and the webmail isn't too great (can't attach files for example) but it's cheap as chips.

If you want some of the basics for code and stuff, send me an e-mail. I'll give you a rundown of anything you are looking to do.

I'll do design and entire development of your site for cheap. Email in profile.

How much is cheap... hehe... and can you offer a consol to update content through the web without touching code like webewiz can?
