Good game intros

What good game intros have you seen?
I though Warhammer 40K and that samurai game with Jean Reno were great.
Why dont they make some of these into TV shows?
Microcosm (a shame the game was a bit disappointing).
Heart of Darkness comes to mind as one of the best intros I've seen. Curse of Monkey Island was pretty darn good too.
Yeah dawn of war was cool, i also really liked the intro for Tenchu: return from darkness.
Slunkar: you mean Onimusha 3. Yeah it was great so were Onimusha 1 and 2, reallly amazing CGI + in-game it had lots of cool cut scenes too. I think Devil May Cry had some cool cut scenes too but can't remember the intro.
Sam & Max: Hit the Road, had a superb intro.
Day of the Tentacle!!!
Donkey Kong
Bumm......Bumm.Bumm..Bumm....BUMMMMMMM.BUM
Do do dee do-doo-de-do
(Where's that DK song by DJ Jazzy Jeff?)

UT2003! still one of my favourites, because its all ingame!
http://www.machinima.com/films.php?id=218for prerendered intros there's the whole blizzard stuff of course (diablo, starcraft etc).
anachronox had a really decent intro too (at least for that time...1999 if i remember right):

http://www.machinima.com is a really good source for ingame videos in general.
cheers :)
Another World. That had a pretty cool intro too.
Another World, Heart of the Alien, Day of the Tentacle, Full Throttle, Half-Life, Max Payne 2, Thief, Thief II, Thief III...
There's a million and a half good game intros...
But classic games have the most impact. So for me the winner will probably be Another World. At the time it seemed impossible on home pc. My friend's and mine jaws dropped when we've seen it. Beautiful music through built-in speaker too! I'm still replaying it once in a while. The "sequel" Heart of the Alien had a great intro too!
From the new onces - Psychonauts... Every Tim Scafer game has a great intro!
Anachronox's intro is not so hot - the game has much better cut scenes than the intro (I'm playing t right now!).
Omikron had a nice flight through the city with the credits.
Many adventure games have great intros...
Anatoly: I bought Anachronox about a year ago for 4.99 cos I knew it wsa good, will play it one day ....
It's a great game!!! I love it! Just finished one more level right now. Great stuff... It wasn't released in 99, but in 2001 when Quake II engine was totally forgotten, yet the game looked good for the time (Well, the textures were of miserable size and first level enemies heads were very polygonal, but the main characters had great facial animations and some things were really beautful).
I've just remembered another great game intro - "Total Overdose"! Oh, the intro is awesome!
Yeh Another World gets my 'revote'. For an original vote, I might suggest Heimdall. If that was how it was spelt...
@anatoly: you're right the intro is not the best cutscene. wait until you leave the destroyed planet. the scenes in the spaceship are awesome! if there wasn't the crappy gameplay (random fights >_<) i would reinstall it right now just for nostalgic reasons :)
man...that game was so underrated ._.
Starcraft
Warcraft 3
World of Warcraft
The cinematics on those just rock.
GranTurismo 2's intro is pretty sweet.
Also fond memories of the little introduction cartoons before each round in the original Worms...
Diablo II + expansion
Another World. That had a pretty cool intro too
First game which popped in my head. Its a very atmospheric setting - A scientist working alone in the lab on an experiment during a thunderstorm. Nice.
What about Half-Life? That has the biggest intro ever!
Another World, and Flashback... They used to blow me a way when I was a kid! :)
Dabz
I recently read somewhere that Another World was made by one guy all by himself. He made his kid brother run around in the garden and filmed his moves for the rotoscope anims :)
Yeah the "interactive" intro in half life up to the point wher you get zapped into another dimension was way cool.
War's never been so much FUN!

No it wasn't. There was nothing 'cool' about spending 30 minutes waiting for the game to start. It was even less cool that you couldn't skip it, if you'd already seen it and just wanted to play the game again.
well I only played it once and enjoyed it. Actually mabe some of the walking around was boring but the way the plot built up and then it all went crazy was cool.
oh yeah onimsusha 3, Ninja Gaiden was pretty good with those people being sliced in half
A warhammer 40K TV show would be great thought wouldnt it?
wait until you leave the destroyed planet
Dude, I've almost beat the game by now! ;-)
if there wasn't the crappy gameplay (random fights >_<)
I love the gameplay! I haven't died even once during almost the whole game (I've finished the superhero ship, votetown and now back on limbus)! Yes, it's a bit unbalanced but it's very nice and smooth. My favorite cutscene has much more to do with voice acting - it's when Sly and Grumpos ask the guy for a sock! I was laughing so hard!!! ;-)))))
It was even less cool that you couldn't skip it, if you'd already seen it and just wanted to play the game again.
I've seen it at least 30 times by now - it doesn't get any better than this! I love it! Awesome game! Though I think that HL2 is better in almost every aspect.
Final Fantasy X had some pretty cool CGI. Worst thing in any game is unskippable CGI or in-game footage! ARG.

Stay away from Anachronox then... ;-) It has an emormous amount of well-don cutscene but every single one is made in game engine. But I'm pretty sure that you can skip them... There's also funtion to rewatch any of the cutscenes that you've seen before - they are THAT good!
Any Soul Reaver/Blood Omen intro or cut scene
Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9 and 10
Shenmue 1 and 2
Rocket Ranger
Dawn of War's intro is the best I have seen in a long time.
Heavy Gear had a pretty cool intro too.
Mechwarrior 4's was nice.
Frontier was awesome at the time. I wonder if it's the first example of machinima? Probably not.
Anatoly: YEah I meant "Unskippable In-game footage. I don't mind watching it first time, it's jsut if I have to repeat a seciton due to dying I want to skip the animation.
Another World (released as "Out of this world" in the USA.. probably to reduce confusion with a soap opera also called "Another World")
Someone mentioned Rocket Ranger. Very cool 1940's serial look to it.
A game I've been playing recently with a lot of good cutscenes (and a very cool intro)... Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition for the PS2.
The main character's attitude is a lot like a cross of Blade (from the Blade movies, duh) and Ash (from Army of Darkness)
from Army of Darkness
It would be better if you said "Evil Dead Trilogy". Just a thought...
While it's true that Ash was in all of the Evil Dead movies, he really didn't turn into a smart ass until Army of Darkness (which is to say Dante is far closer to Ash in Army of Darkness than Ash in Evil Dead 1)
This "Out of this World" game you're talking about...Is
that the one for the SNES? I think I remember
something about a cutscene playing where a worm
would strike you in the knee and you died. Is that it?
If so, then that's the game that temporarily turned my
parents into gamers. My mom played that game all
evening and left the system on all night so she could
keep playing in the morning.
I actually never got a chance to play it, but it looked cool.
Best NES intro of all time -> Megaman 2
he really didn't turn into a smart ass until Army of Darkness
When, the turning point is actually in Evil Dead II - comes when he says (guess what?) "Groovy!". After that - he goes after a witch and saves the girl ("<Whistle>! Let's go!").
I know. I'm a huge Evil Dead fan. Have collectables, other crap and met Bruce in person.
is that the one for the SNES?
Well, it was for Amiga originaly and yes it is that game. There are several versions of it on other consoles. They have slight differences in graphics/music/sound and etc. For exaple panasonic 3do version has hand-drawn background. Sega-cd version has cd-music (remixed by the original composer) and a semi-sequel and so on. I think it's the best of all Delphine software vector-based games. Mainly because Eric Chachi made it and thenhe wasn't involved with the games to come (Heart of the Alien, Flashback, Fade to black). Great stuff!
and left the system on all night so she could
keep playing in the morning.
Hmmm... Maybe you just could show her that the game has password save system? They were just four letters! I still remmeber them! ;-)
Battlefield 1942 is pretty sweet. badum bum ba dum bum, badum bum ba dum bum
