Anyone bought Oblivion?
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Anyone bought Oblivion?
My understanding is it was released today in the USA.
One of you must have bought it - if not, can someone go and buy it and report back?
IM GOING CRAZY! Waiting for it to arrive 24th.
Preordered the collectors edition.
I watched some of Gamespots 12hr Oblivion marathon today, and boy did it look sweet. can't wait.
I have schoolwork and other things to attend to. Its purchase will wait in light of it apparently being addictive as hell.
Currently awaiting my Collectors Edition pre-order as AshMantle is.....and knowing that shipping from USA->Canada isn't the fastest with a small budget, it'll be a week or two before I get my hands on it.
I heard a rumour that it may be released on 23/3 in parts of Europe - just a rumour though.
I will be in the shops first thing on 23/3 - just in case.
puki, are you going to put up a tent? ^^
Nah - I will take my baseball bat and convince people they were queuing behind me.
The most important saved Game:
At the end of Oblivion's introduction, just before you leave the sewers, you get an opportunity to revise all your character choices.
SAVE YOUR GAME AT THIS POINT AND MAKE SURE YOU NEVER EVER DELETE IT!!!
From this saved game, you can always create a completely new character and start the game over with a new character concept. if you don't preserve this SAVE-GAME point, you will have to go all the way through the whole introduction again to make a new, different character thats aprox 4 hours of your time waisted after you already learned all the basics.
Take note of the approx
4 HOURS bit.
Probably 4 hours if you pay attention.
I had someone drive into the back of my car at a stop light this morning. The good news is that They had oblivion in the local best buy. Got the collectors edition since the other party was at fault and I don't have a deduction to worry about :)
Haven't tried it yet though, can't wait :D
I got mine yesterday (Monday around noon)... That is when most EB Games in Toronto recieved it.
I still haven't played it yet though... I probably won't be able to play it until the weekend because of work.
"RexRhino"=Nutter
Factual statement - nutcake, fruitcake.
He has it - but he won't play it.
Call the doctor - he's over the edge.
Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.
I got mine this morning and can't WAIT to dive into it tonight. I know someone who was clear of the initial dungeon in 40 minutes so don't believe the 4 hour hype.
Oooh.
Hey, do you have a webcam? You could point it at the screen and we could watch you play.
Arriving Friday for me.
In the meantime, check out the official Bethsoft forums.
It's always hilarious when a game over which every minute detail has been slavishly picked apart by fanboys for months beforehand, is finally released (and the fanboys realise that it won't give them the mystical religious experience they'd been expecting).
I'm really looking forward to this game. Morrowind was fantastic, but lack of funds and a backlog of university essays that need writing mean that I'll have to wait a while before I buy this. Pity me, Puki - Feel my pain.
Just got an email saying that mine was posted today. Won't be home till Thursday and won't have time to play it until Friday at the earliest, so it sounds like it'll be waiting for me.
I played Oblivions quite a bit today, to me it feels like a bigger more refined morrowind. More fluid looking combat, misc dungeons a lot bigger than morrowings cramped ones.
The scenery feels like morrowinds with a lot of stuffing added. Runs great on my 6600GT at 1024x768 with everything pretty much maxed out.
On the PC at least, the locks seem almost impossible to pick. Severely imprecise mouse controls and lag, make the lock pick mini game almost impossible. Perhaps its just my character who's skills arent really set up for thievery, but it feels wrong somehow.
Havent played it enough to judge whether its a great game or not. First impressions are good though. Random monster encounters are less prolific in the wild, feels a lot more realistic.
Hey Evak
Apparently you can up the draw distance detail by setting uGridsToLoad=9 in the ini file (You need to be editing the one in My documents\My Games\Oblivion directory. )
give that a go and see if it makes things look better again...
Got my copy... very nice...
I disagree about the lock picking... I opened a very hard lock with only 3 broken lock picks... I like it.. much better than random chance...
the only issue I am having is the size and scope of it all.... its almost too big... too grand... too open ended...
I had the same issue with morrowind at first tho.. then after about 15 hours I really started to get into it hard core...
I made it through the opening thing in about 2 hours... I didn't think to save... I will if and when I go through it again...
My PC needs more ram... I have 512 and it is barely enough.. It isn't my PC... so I have to wait for the owner (my dad) to get the ram for it....
Everything seems so alive... however.. I'm starting to see through the actions of the AI.. I've only seen 1 random conversation.. and it wasn't all that impressive...
I guess everyone in tamriel has an IQ of 75
with the locks, I didn't read the manual lol. It's not that hard. I didn't realise you could catch them at the apex and they wouldn't fall, so I was trying to get all the pegs up and then click the mouse toturn the key.
It's a good game, I will try the graphics settings tomorrow. The wife watched me play all night, and got annoyed when I started messing with settings and not playing the game.
Anyway, it's a cool game with some fun missions that crop up. I've just been hired to do a bit of the olf poirot in some ladys castle.
No wonder you weren't online! I'll be getting this. How does it run?
I joined the dark brother hood.. I'm making it my goal to become a vampire sired by vincent, who is giving my my contracts (people to assassinate)
... My horse is immortal... he refuses to die... I watched him take down 3 scamps and 2 wolves all at the same time...
GameSpot.com got a nice "highlights" video of Greg Kasavin's (my fav editor there) 12hr marathon of Oblivion (well, more like 8hr since a fire-alarm interupted the sequence) for those who wanted to watch some then-live feed of gameplay footage.
Cant wait to reprise my role of a Khajiit thief....where's my freaking pre-order? ><
At least it's good to hear it runs well on a 6600, was afraid I wouldnt be able to play the game at above-average graphical settings @ 1024x768 on my 256mb 6800 GT.
Anyone who watches without self-touching is a bender.
Er... ok then.
I'd also like some feedback from 360 owners on how well it plays with joypad and anything else you may care to enlighten us on. More info on how the AI characters supposedly live their own lives (independently of your actions) would be cool.
it runs well on my A64 3200, 1gb ram 128mb AGP 6600GT. Currently got it on high, 1024x768 with HDR and trees and objects on max and at a guess it runs at about 28 - 70 fps depending where you are. Never too slow that you cant fight multiple opponents.
Yesterday I was helping some boys kill Goblins at a farm and there 3 waves 3, 4 then 5 at once, plus the two boys and myself out in the open. And the combat was still very playable.
The game is huge, particularly the wilderness dungeons. Where morrowing often only had about 3-5 rooms and a corridor. Oblivion often has multilevel dungeons.
One thing I don't like and will have to try without HDR for comparrison is that I need a torch undoors to see anything. And outside, the terrain doesn't illuminate with the torch well. The falloff is very small on the ground and grass where trees rocks and other static objects get lit a lot more.
there is a brightness setting, but its not like gamma, HDR looks a lot nicer on armour and what have you.
Anyway, trying not to spoil the game, so I'm avoiding talking about stuff you get to do. But it is a cool game. Wife and I were playing it till almost 2am.
Oh, you already said how it ran, sweet!
yeah, oh loading times are negligible, the longest was about 4-5 seconds, most of the time its instantanious. I did defrag both partitions I was using before hand though :)
I understand the 360 load times can be up to 20 seconds, judging from what I read elsewhere. Seems to be complaints about the draw in. It's weird, the sliders for adjusting settings aren't very clear what they do exactly. But trees at the lowest setting are entirely flat 2D sprites with no shading!!! VERY UGLY.
Being an artists I'm pretty critical, but Oblivion is nice, if a little curvy. All the rocks and scenery are a bit more rounded than I would like. Draw in doesn't effect me too much. Kind of looks like they are trying for a sort of fainterly impressionist depth of field effect. Does look really pretty. Turning up static objects to max really populates the mid ground a lot. Oddly much of the scenery never appears at all at lower settings. Good thing its not MP ;P
Great - it will be fine for me - I have the same CPU as "Evak", but I have an extra half gig of memory and a 256MB Radeon X800XL.
I'm so excited - I have downloaded the 8 hour gameplay video and I can watch that now until I buy the game.
Oooh, it's like Christmas, and tomorrow is Chrismas Eve.
BTW Nvidia are supposed to be releasing drivers optimized for oblivion today :) I'll post a link when I see it up.
I be getting those drivers long as they dont screw up like they normally do and break the graphics on 100 other games just to make one specific title look better.
(or not have a preset config for the game exe like they already do for games, which I already have overwritten with my current defaults, 2x AA & 8x AF, w/ Quality rendering)
Mind posting some piccies Evak? Want an idea how the game compares on your system then with all the pics I've seen taken from those beast-machines that run the thing at max details at a high-resolution.
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nzone_downloads_winxp_2k_32bit_84.25.htmlSo far a mixed response from the public. And no mention of Oblivion in the docs. I'll be trying it later. One thing I noticed on the boards is that Oblivion doesn't run well on old FX cards at all. So if you have one of those you should stay well clear. People are claiming 1-2fps in places (not sure what settings).
ATI 9600 and 9800 fare quite well in lower settings I hear.

Always a chance that they forgot to turn shadows on previously though. I guess I'll find out later.
I'd also like some feedback from 360 owners on how well it plays with joypad and anything else you may care to enlighten us on. More info on how the AI characters supposedly live their own lives (independently of your actions) would be cool.
It plays great with a joypad... but then again, I am now used to a joypad. When I first switched from PC games to console games it took a few weeks to get used to using a joypad. Now, I would play PC games with an Xbox controller (and actually, 360 controllers are USB instead of the proprietary connection like the last Xbox, so you can plug them into your PC).
The graphics look amazing... the only different between the Xbox 360 and the PC version from looking at my Xbox and looking at the PC video captures, is that there is slightly more Level Of Detail Draw In on the xbox 360. There are times when I am running, and I notice a rock suddenly becomes a lot less polygonish as it gets closer. But that is comparing a 360 to the highest end PCs that they do their game movies from.
I don't know where people are getting the 20 second load time for the Xbox 360 though. The longest load time I have encountered has been 5 seconds. Perhaps as I get farther into the game it will get longer (I have just left the dungeon and am now exploring the imperial city), but load times do not seem to be a problem thus far.
Anybody figure out how to pick locks with more than one tumbler though? My guy is a thief, and I can't seem to pick locks with more than a single tumbler.
rex thats the problem I had. when the tumble reached the top you have to press the button (I'm on the PC version do I don't know which it is on 360). If you time it right then the tumbler should be locked in its up position and you can move onto the next one.
I had the same problem and got really confused till someone above said it was fairly easy. At which point I knew I was doing something wrong.
It actually is quite easy when you know how :)
I keep comptemplating whether to get it ... and then I'm not sure if I should go for the PC version or the 360 version. I have that GeForce 7800 GT OC card ... and I also have a nice 26" HDTV for my 360 ... seems like I can't go wrong either way. I'm just not sure if it's my type of game. However, right now is a good time for me to just chill a bit and just do some gaming. I might pick it up.
even if I had an xbox 360.. I would go with the PC version because of a much better hotkey system, the editor, and my comfort level with a mouse/keyboard system.
I like my hotkeys, makes changing outfits a lot easier... I can store a main outfit, and other pieces... say.. A cloak and hood for running about scaring people and armor.... and still have room for a weapon or 2
can always plug the PC in the TV if you want too :)
I was originaly going to buy a 360 to play this game. Oblivion was going to be a launch title... Now I have to find something else to convince me I want to get a next gen console.
I should have my PC copy by Friday or early next week. Can't wait. Probably the most eagerly awaited game since Morrowind. Hope it supports widescreen properly;)

Touch my Large!
EDIT:
This video features a fair bit of wandering about in the greenery - not dungeon stuff, but out there in the trees and grass and bushes.
My copy shipped from play.com today, so I should have it by the weekend.
My friend has Oblivion.
Ive only had time to play 3 hours of it, Im having withdrawals. I MUST PLAY MORE!
Getting my copy Friday (if not sold out).
There are so far only 2 things I am unhappy with...
The physics makes it very difficult to decorate my house... I can place objects however I like, but step on them, or bump the table.... or worse.. nudge an object while I am placing another and all hell breaks loose...
And.. also related to the physics... I can't hit things with my sword.... I bump the table and crap goes flying.. I bash it with my dai katana and a few sparks shoot up and everything remains stationary.... rediculous...
Practicle applications include projectiles and trap disarming...
also... the addition of houses to buy, makes it meaningless to steal someone elses house... which bothers me greatly... I wish that houses who'se denizens have 'moved' would become available to own... as in.. the deeds were somewhere in the house.. would also make for a good theft... steal a deed, go to the councile and claim you rightfully own the house (after a forged sig) and then head back to the place and 'evict' the owners...
EDIT
On close inspection and further testing... it seems you can hit objects with your weapon... it isn't very tight tho.. and could never be done with procision... cutting ropes is not doable.. and some objects still don't get hit... for some reason...
you know what was one of the best parts? No copy protection... none... not even a CD key.... I love these guys
Seriously Dampe? Wow...
Still awaiting my pre-order....should have probably pre-ordered earlier then a day before the games launch >.>.
Just shipped it yesterday....hope UPS is fast getting from the States to Canada.
Except for having to have the CD in the drive to play.
I'm not sure what all the hype is about concerning Oblivion - the first I heard about the game was on this forum. However, it sounds like these forums are going to be pretty quiet over the next few months, while you lot go off to live in the land of Oblivion. Hmm, guess I'll actually have to do some coding, instead of hanging around here. :P
yeah, quite a few people were upset about the physics. THere is a grab key that lets you pick up and move objects but it's hardly intuitive.
plus one time I knocked some junk flying and thought I'd pick it up and try tidying up, and promptly got arrested.
One other thing, I was in a bad guys place when the bad guy spotted me picking up something in his lair. When I got back to civilization I was promptly arrested :(
plus one time I knocked some junk flying and thought I'd pick it up and try tidying up, and promptly got arrested.
I hope this isnt a result of them dumbing the AI down...
The pickup icon turns red if what you're about to do is illegal. If it's red, don't do it if someone can see you.
Are you able to "leg it" from the cops?
funny things can happen, I was exploring and by accident stumbled across something, rather than accepting the mission. And the AI had to compensate.
So tyrning up half way triggered a bunch of journal listings I was not party to, and on completion, the dialogue was a bit messed up as I had to skip through a couple of things that would have occured if I had accepted the mission in person.
Trying to avoid spoilers, so that may not have made a lot of sense.
With the stealing, news certainly travels fast, particularly in the case of the theft from the bad guys lair. And I think I killed the guy too.
With the castle, I hadn't even put the "stolen" item in my inventory, just picked it up and was holding it above the ground. Would have been nice if the AI was clever enough to check whether you had actually placed the object in your inventory.
Anyway, so far I've played about 6 hours and barely touched on the main campaign story. Been having too much fun just wandering around and getting involved in everyone elses lives.
Mmm, I have noted that there are a lot of people who have bought Oblivion that cannot get the DVD to work. There is a whole thread of them on the Official forums.
I hope my copy works tomorrow.
heh, probably starforce drivers previously installed for other games or something nasty like that.
Mmm, I have noted that there are a lot of people who have bought Oblivion that cannot get the DVD to work.
Stop the presses!!!
Still, on the plus side - if it works - there are loads of cheats for the game.
Hi-ho sausage!!!
yes, I also tried to tidy up someones home after running head long into a table... they didn't like it...
i think it is just a flaw.. I'm sure they will fix it in a patch if enough people complain...
Any signs of falling through the floor yet?
My god did I have that happen to me on one too many occasions in both Daggerfall & Morrowind.....be nice to hear if Bethesda incorporated that physics engine well enough to not let that happen this time around.
I haven't yet fallen through the floor... I have had 2 crashes, however... which is a very small number for me, this PC, and 24 hours of play. I got stuck once... it wasn't stuck on a wall.... it was stuck in a caved in coridor that I fell into and couldn't jump back out of... entirely my own fault as I should have known not to jump into a burning pile of rubble... I wanted to see if it would hurt me... it did.. and I got stuck behind it....
I have had some stickyness when hitting an edge just right... but I always come unglued in about 1 second... slowly slip down the edge or whatever...
Unlike morrowind, I can jump on a fence post and then jump right off... not become hopelessly stuck.
It isn't -perfect- but it is good enough to hardly notice... and the AI has been able to follow me well without getting stuck even though I jump around like an idiot (acrobat class) and it actually works well... jump shots with a bow, and flying sword hits....
People have complained about the hit detection... I haven't really noticed it.. it seems to hit what I think it should hit... no problem.. unless I'm attacking an object on a table of course...
I did manage to leave a few following NPCs back... but only when I did something drastic.... like jump off a cliff and expect them to follow... (or ride off a cliff... the horses are freaking invincible)
You can collect quite the group of NPCs... and if you baby sit them slightly... and refrain from drasticly odd antics... they will follow you and compliment you well in a dungeon... Thats right... I took a grouping of 3 soldiers, Martin, and another soldier on a trip through the kvatch rubble.... thats 5 NPCs.... I really should have taken them out hunting..
I did take Martin and Jaufree treking off their horses and into a dungeon.... they were very helpful...
Its nearly a party system... it just lacks party type spells...
Woo - my wife has said she will buy Oblivion (360) for me! I knew I married her for a reason... ;)
Beats the living daylights out of my Radeon 9600 Pro with Athlon XP 2500+ and 1280MB RAM, even with no shadows, no bloom, no HDR, low object fade, low tree detail, small textures, no AA, no fancy hardware settings like AA and Ani Filtering, and 800x600 resolution. Judging by min. system reqs, I can almost see why... although, since I still meet them, the sadly low frame rate is hard to excuse.
Looks like it's time to upgrade :(
Strangely, when I have it running at higher settings (just to see...), it still looks really bad. In fact, with my card, I can't see the difference between low quality and high quality. Or feel a difference, for that matter... my frame rate seems nearly unaffected by settings.
Maybe it's my processor... I am having trouble determining what it is though, since the frame rate seems to be about the same low amount throughout the game, except in small rooms. (Which leads me to believe that it is the video card, even though I have it on rather low settings which do not seem right since I have Source looking quite nice with this card which Oblivion should be at least remotely compareable to).
Nice load times, though.
I'm going to reserve my judgement on this game until after I get it running properly -- right now it feels really clunky, but that is probably because of my severe hardware problems.
Does anyone else think that it rains too much?
The AI is a bit dumb, I find. They can kill me, but they also do stupid things like running into falling rocks and being flattened, finding themselves stuck in lava but not trying to get out, stopping following me (which is extremely annoying in a game of such large scale... especially when you're on a horse..., there should be a way to get them to yell something so you can find them). I have been attacked numerous times for touching objects, with guys claiming that I stole them. If someone is in a fight and I decide to help out, he will arrest me (or kill me) if I accidentally deliver the slightest tap to him.
As a result of all this, I am already considered a sinner.
The IK is beatiful, and really makes up for this. Watching people's horses running up staircases towards them is great, and adds a great bit of realism to the game that shadows and bumpy spec maps never could.
Based on many people's problems with hardware, I think this game could be much better optimized (even with its massive scale), and I wonder if they actually playtested it on slower machines. Why did they rush the release?
Given your video card, could it be that it looks the same @ higher settings possibly because the hardware features utilized by them for those levels your video card does not support?
Anyhow, still awaiting my damned pre-order here, although it does now currently reside at the UPS station 4 hours from my current position......god, the waiting is killing me.
yes it rains to much..heh
Its runs fine on the 6800gtoc with everything maxed, grass /self/distant shadows ect. (altho it does take a bite out of the framerate its still playable)
(I have had some reboots also..I think its time for 500watt)
Ill try it on the Fx 5900oc later today.
Ill say I like it better than Morrowind so far.
Puki , is it realesed there yet?
Sam
Runs playable in low detail on the athlon 2200+ 512 meg and 5900oc, with medium textures and only character shadows.
Still looks decent with the specular maps ect, no Hdr or bloom.
I havent tried the new forceware yet...it might help
Sam
I'm really impressed with this. They've gone back to what made the series great and got rid of everything which was less than stellar in Morrowind. They've gone back to really good dungeons. They've gone back to much more NPC interaction and "random" mini quests. They've gone back to really enjoyable combat. They've ditched the slow movement in favour of fast movement, instant travel and much much less pointless wandering along empty pathways. They've ditched the slow and clunky interface of Morrowind for a really slick GUI that doesn't make you spend twenty minutes changing your armour.
They've really done everything I wanted in an Elder Scrolls game. It's as big as Morrowind, even more dynamic than Daggerfall, more deep and complex than ever before and as much fun as Arena. I can really understand why people are burying themselves in this for days on end.
Played for a few hours today on Athlon 2700+ and Geforce6800GT with 1GB system Ram.
All in all I like it very much, the visuals and the music create a great atmosphere.
Movement does have a slight feeling of clunkiness to it, at one point I had to walk back a bit then jump forward to get up 2 steps which should have been easily negotiated.
I would say the movement/motion of the player through the 3D world has to be one area that needs further work.
It is strange when you go into a book shop and each book highlights with a red icon as you look at them, clicking on one to browse means they think you are trying to steal it!
Similarly in a tavern I accidentally clicked on an apple to find myself accosted by the local guard.
It has crashed once when exiting the game, though it didn't cause my PC to reboot so that's not a major problem.
I've only played DaggerFall before, and I must say this does have the same feel/atmosphere though on a much grander scale.
I would give it a score of 9/10 for atmosphere and 8/10 for gameplay...highly recommended!
OH YEH!!!
I have been playing solidly for several hours - already found the 'GOD MODE' so I have unlimited health, magic, fatigue and no encumburance - in fact, I can't be hurt by anything - plus I can carry tons of stuff around with me.
Horses are totally cool - I love my new horse - I have called him "Sausage".
Hi-ho "Sausage" - we ride on for the gates of Oblivion.
Woof.
'GOD MODE' Where's the fun in that?
It is a great game, like all elder scrolls game it is flawed, they fixed the biggies and the issues I have are mostly small. It's probably not the best game for a thief character.
Silly little things like merchants selling things that you can't find in the store if you want to steal them.
They should have made the guards so they watch dodgy characters more closely and in groups for more powerful bad guys rather than instantly prey on relatively clean players without good reason.
The UI is cool once you realise that F1 to F4 go to a primary journal tab.
It's obvious that the game was made with consoles in mind, and I'd prefer to be able to drag items from my inventory over my character and see more than 8 items at a time when scrolling through inventory. Overall I like it though.
To be honest, I'm glad I got the PC version, it's already as good as the 360 on my midrange gaming system, and theres the opportunity to really ramp up the settings if I still want to play the game a year or so.
My biggest problem is that I have to wait for the wife to play it, since she likes to take part in my adventures whilst I play. At least that means I get some work done :)
Evak... sneak, and then pickpocket the stuff off the merchants ;)
there is a LOT for theif/assassin in this game, even more than morrowind...
However.. since the 24 hour mark.. I have managed to get stuck inside 2 set pieces... a collum and a platform... I didn't fall all the way through them... and with the ability to just fast travel back to the same location makes it not a game ender... so its no problem.. unless it were to happen indoors or in a cave or dungeon...
it is rare.. and the collum was really my own fault ... I jumped right into it... and I shouldn't have tried.. there was no point to..
I'm a vampire.. and as a vampire I get stronger when I don't feed, yet in the day I get hurt by the sun.. and later on worse things.. including being shunned from the community when I start to look like a monster... tho that hasn't happened yet.... if it gets too rough I can always do the vampirism removeal quest..
God mode... wtf is the point?
Yay! I found the problem setting: Draw distance.
I can crank everything up nice and high, as long as the "draw distant lands" setting isn't on. (It seems to use a really inefficient technique... I guess it looks good on better computers, but for me the distant lands are really mucky looking things that are better replaced with a strange bluish fog).
This is quite a cool game :)
I found myself suddenly winding up in all sorts of guilds, and at first I was thinking "hey, hang on, I don't want to do that!", then I just gave in and went with the flow... it's been shockingly amazing.
I've bumped into that vampire quest mentioned in the PC Gamer review, and I found the quest system to be a bit too blatant and obvious. The quests themselves aren't obvious, but the way your journal seems to do the thinking for you is unfortunate, because it takes away that nice "AHA!" moment when I figure something out or decide on an alternative to something. (Eg: Don't kill the person). It wasn't the REVIEWER who was thinking these things, it was his character!
Hopefully that will change as I get further into the game.
There are still a few points driven totally by me, such as choosing to talk with somebody I'm supposed to kill and suddenly learning of his innocence when I decide to talk with him.
It looks like a lot of the effects in the game, such as hair (it has fancy hair, doesn't it?) are handled by Pixel Shader 3, which is probably why it doesn't look fantastic for me. In that case, I can't wait `til I get a new vid card, and I suppose it's a good thing that it is this flexible.
The hotkeys seem annoyingly useless. Each hotkey can only be assigned to a single item, so if I wanted to draw a bow & arrows, I would have to assign the bow to one key, the arrows to another, and press them both when needed. (Or just keep the arrows equipped).
Shambler:
I'm getting crashes when exiting, too!
Here's a question I cant seem to find anywhere regarding the game.....how much composed music is there in it? I loved what I heard in Morrowind, but god damn, all of it was like 2-5min long, and there were only around 15 tracks altogether that get played over & over across a 50+ hr gameplay experiance......
I get the crashes while exiting too... fortuneately.. I only exit every so often (20-30 hours)
the music is a tad reapetative... I notice about 3 main walking about themes.. and 2 battle themes... and 2-4 hey something new themes or townish themes..
there are 2 moments so far that have had their own themes.. (i won't say what moments) however... the music is fan-@#!*ing-tastic and I don't mind hearing it again... and most of the game is silent... so you spend 15 ,min with no music and then you wander into a big field or a new area and the main themes come up and they sound all grand and mysterious exactly fitting what you feel moving through this really rich world.... it seems to que at really awesome vistas across the land...
It also comes up when something near you wants to hurt you... clueing you in that you are in a bad spot... no other warnings, just the music.. and I love that... the big battle music comes in when you fight a bunch of things... or fight in the arena.. (which I am grand champion of)
This game will be far more than what morrowind was for me.. I made it to level 45 in morrowind... In about 100 hoursish... I plan to go much longer than that... and I'm level 6 at 33 hours...
Well scanning through the music directory there seems to be more than Morrowind. For example the sub-dirs now include 'battle, dungeons, explore, public and special', and each dir has about 5+ mp3's of around 2min+ duration.
Managed to play it for 8+ hours today. It's good - the amount of detail is actually pretty staggering, the gameplay was as varied as I wanted it to be and the immense draw distance gets the idea across that it's a BIG world very well. I'm hooked.
I get the crashes while exiting too... fortuneately.. I only exit every so often (20-30 hours)
I can believe that lol
Other little niggles I've found are
Shadows sometimes are projected onto several floors, so for example if someone is upstairs you can see their shadow on the dowstairs floor as if there was no upper floor/ceiling in place.
The quest to retrieve a book from a drawer in the magician's guild...
I retrieved the book but the quest initiator didn't recognise I had completed the quest until I went back upstairs and stole the blank parchment out of the drawer too...maybe I wasn't paying attention to what he said?
there are a few bugs regarding quests... and sometimes.. bug causes by the freeform nature of the game and the AI... While trying to join the theives guild, I had to wait 3 hours (in game) before I realized the guy floating 5 feet off the ground 100 yards away is who we were all waiting for.. I skipped ahead 1 hour, it is solved the problem... Thats the key... if something doesn't work right.. fast travel or skip time... odds are it will fix things...
also... the guards are really weak... so killing them all is easy... however.. getting rid of that bounty is not an easy task... you pretty much have to hit the jail... and considering 6 deaths earned me 60 days in jail... (and a loss of 10 diff skill points) I am fairly sure that spending years in jail would be a bad thing.... the guards seem to be limitless as well... so you really won't gain anything by doing it...
also... I have discovered that you can't kill story integral people like in morrowing... I tried to kill martin on a whim... he would 'die' and then soon after it would say... martin was knocked unconcious... and then moments later he would get up from his nap...
I haven't decided if this is good or bad...
there seem to be lots and lots of oblivion gates... much more than I expected... and they seem to be randomly located around the map... I don't know if they will matter... I sure hope I'm not required to close them all to beat the game.... I know of at least 15... and I've traversed less than 1% of the map by my estimates... do the math...
My tip - play it in 'GOD MODE' and lesson anything that comes near you.
I'm about to start my second session of gaming. I have me horse ("Sausage") and I am going to see exactly how much stuff you can carry in 'GOD MODE' - it would appear to be an infinite amount of stuff - not that I need the money to sell it all, coz I boosted my funds to a billion gold pieces - I can buy anything, anywhere, anytime.
I am the hardest and richest thing in all of Oblivion - I should be the emporer blokie, not that "Martin" ponce.
Plus, in 'GOD MODE' you can leap off high places for fun.
Plus, in 'GOD MODE' you can leap off high places for fun.
You can do that in normal mode too, it just hurts more :)
Incidentally, if you want to boost your character's sneak skill easily, go into a guild, find a character that hangs around in a room full of furniture, jam your character head on into the furniture (i.e. chairs next to tables), then stick on autowalk and sneak, then go have something to eat, watch a little TV, you need to check it occasionally as dialogues pop up at key skill advances.
I got it and love it.
Cheating is for when I have beaten the game later ;)
The developers seem to have cheated.
In Morrowind, if you cheated and had loads of money, you could train your character up by constantly getting a trainer to train you until you either maxed out or the trainer had no more skill to train you.
In Oblivion, you can only train 5 times between levels. I feel that is a rotten and very dirty trick to stop people like me cheating.
However, I basically take the value of 5 and modify it to 1 and lock it at 1 - the game then thinks I have only trained once per level and now I can soak up the training.
I am slowly lessoning Oblivion into playing the way it was meant to be played.
ps. me horse is doing well - he got beat up by some robbers/bandits - but I saved him. Tomorrow me and "Sausage" are going to chase deer about in the meadows.
I called my horse.."Mash"....
My horse is named Glue... he is black with red eyes ;)
So... has anyone NOT been bitten by a vampire?
It seems strangely unavoidable...
I got bitten in my sleep, and now my character's a mess because he doesn't know how to feed on people :S
... I... I wasn't bitten out in public... I chose to be bitten by vincente of the dark brother hood... I have nejoyed being a vampire... but it is time to be a day walker again
You gotta enter a house where someone is sleeping. Then go up to them and hit the spacebar. Then select "feed".
I had to complete a huge quest to get rid of my vampirism or whatever it's called...
'I am slowly lessoning Oblivion into playing the way it was meant to be played.'
Puki - you just must make game designers everywhere shake their heads in frustration ;-)
Anyway, if anyone's interested, I've found you can copy your Morrowind mp3's into the relevant Oblivion music folders and it'll play them as well.
Guess that means you can have whatever you like as your background music.
if you get some kind of heamophilia disease whilst being attacked on your quest, you can use a cure disease potion before it turns you into a vampire. I think it takes a day or a night to become the first stage of vampirism.
Apparently you can then control it by feeding and stay in the first stage. I refused to fed and am now 100% vampire and can't go outside between 8pm and 6am.
trying to complete the quest to get a cure now.
Um, Hemophilia? oh @#!*... I got something like that last night. Poo.
Anyone know what to do when you've gone into the first Gate to Oblivion? I'm stuck in this round room, can go up/down on a lift with a bit of work, or exit. I'm not sure what to do next....
i don't remember a lift in the first oblivion gate..... search the walls.. sometimes the doors are hard to see
being a vampire has lots of ben. too... like the vampire spells, and super additions to stats... just the allergy to the sun and the weakness to fire.. (and silver weapons I find)
I'm stuck in this round room, can go up/down on a lift with a bit of work, or exit.
Go up the lift, get off, go up the ramp that winds around the inside.
I accidentally did that entire bit as level 1 because I forgot to rest beforehand. It was rather tough :)
As a vampire, not being able to talk to anyone, being shunned by communities and not be able to gain or complete quests is a real pain too.
So far I only took the amulet somewhere. Havent bothered with gates and stuff.
oh man... you are a full fledged vampire and you have never been through a gate....
There is a mod out there already that sticks a chest full of vampire cure potions somewhere... could be worth downloading if you don't feel like doing the 20+ hour quest that has you searching through dungeon after dungeon for Grand Soul Gems (5) with NO DIRECTION whatsoever... she didn't even tell me to look in dungeons... I just happened to find one of them in a dungeon right next to her friggin house and put 2 and 2 together....
Perturbatio;
Poopie again- I haven't rested.
And nothing happens up there, only one guy to kill and then come back down. ???? eh. I get to try again later..
[edit]
And i asked that guy who susrvived in the gate to help me. he did so, and then walked into the lava... What a freakin moron! :D
Yeah... the AI is really smart in the grand scheme of things... but the AI for controling NPCs movements on the small scale (the AI has, from what I can tell, 2 scales.. off map and on map) is plain retarded.... walking into lava... jumping in front of your arrows... while the AI for the enemies isn't half bad... they dodge arrows if the see you... they catch you pretty good... they will lead you if you try to run circles around them... all in all pretty smart...
but get this trick.... I actually figgered out how to time it right (when the frame rate is high enough) to snatch an archers arrow right out of the air... it takes practice to get it right.. but I've done it at least 3 times... try it... if you can't find an archer... fire an arrow into the air and try to catch it... (be careful... you CAN hit yourself... and you won't like the outcome.)
heh, I only need one more soul gem, to get some quick
SPOILER on an easy way to get some Gems:
I stole 3 of them from the Arcane university in the capital city. There's a VERY hard display case with 3 in them in the entrance foyer. I also stole one from one of the mages in a mage guild whilst they were sleeping. And you are supposed to be able to buy them at the right stores.
At the moment I've just been doing the side quests, and ignoring the main plot, which is why I havent got very far. Took 2 hours to get the first 4 of 5 grand soul gems.
Just hope that the quest doesn't go much further than these 5.
I'm gonna go steal the rest from the uni.... just to you know... there is 1 north east from her house 1 square.. to the west about 5 squares (elven ruin) and on to the south down the wood path steps and across the water to a mine/cave (called crawfish or something... that is... if you do end up needing more. haha
It will take you 20 hours to do the dungeons tho... they are MASSIVE
I havent been biten yet, but ive killed alot of vamps.
The Oblivion gates are getting a bit old, Im on my sixth one.
(all so similar)
Is there slaughter fish in this one? i havent swam alot ...but I havent seen any...would have in morrowind..heh
Sam
Any idea what to do at the top of the round shaft in the first gate Zmatrix? Ive got up to the top, blood fountain's there etc- what do i do then!?? :S
Any idea what to do at the top of the round shaft in the first gate Zmatrix? Ive got up to the top, blood fountain's there etc- what do i do then!?? :S
Did you speak to the prisoner in the cage at the top of the tower?
100TH POST!
Is there slaughter fish in this one? i havent swam alot ...but I havent seen any...would have in morrowind..heh
There sure are. I took a quest involving a bunch of them when I was at level 1. Took a lot more damage than I took closing the first Oblivion gate at level 1 too. :/
I've been searching the woodlands and meadows for a hamster - not found one yet.
Did you speak to the prisoner in the cage at the top of the tower?
There was no prisoner, however i found out i was in the place that opened the gates that allowed me into an even larger area within oblivion where there was a prisoner at the top, i got the stone and all is done :)
Now, I must have theived somethig without even realising because I stoopped to talk to this dude on a horse and promptly got arrested.
Now, how do I go and get my horse back? :S
Ironically....Bethesda Software is only about 10 miles from my house.....and I still havent bought Oblivion yet.....what the hell is wrong with me...
I got arrested for acidentally picking up a peice of bread, but got away with taking a horse from the Orc stables(I forget the name) outside of imperial city....they were just gonna eat it.
course it wandered off after I got off for a second.
Cygnus, its either where you left it ,or it went to the stables you purchased it I believe.
Sam
if you fast travel around, your horse goes with you... (if you OWN one) if you stole it.. I'm not so sure... however... watch out... if it takes TOO much damage... it will die... but it takes a lot.... i mean... A LOT... as in... it takes falling off a cliff and being beaten up by 2 imps, a wolf, 3 scamps and a bandit arher and axeman...... I couldn't kill them all fast enough after knocking the horse silly jumping off a really high cliff....
I found some Soul Gems at an undisclosed location, managed to pick the lock to the case they were in, stole them in broad daylight, and escaped from the police by jumping off an extremely high bridge :)
I foolishly returned to the stables to get my horse, only to find that Ben wasn't there! Those ectoplasms must have arrested him :'(
So, I stole another horse (bounty now 700 gold), at which point I also realized that my stolen soul gems had disappeared out of thin air. Well... I ran back to the university (a long chain of guards chased me there, some even on horses!), looked at the case, and saw that the stones definietly were not there... I'm giving the game the benefit of the doubt, and assuming that either the stones were enchanted and are now under the close watch of the Arch Mage, some blasted pickpocket stole them while I was on the run, or I had a hole in my pocket. (Very annoyingly, I seem to still be in posession of a crystal ball that I unkowingly stole from the same place. I seem to have become rather obsessed with robbery, to the extent that it is an uncontrolable habit).
Well, this is great... so, with no choice available due to lack of funds and the fact that they currently do not want to negotiate, I've ended up on the run from authority. I abandoned the horse and swam my way to some strange ruins, and my only comfort now is a big case of whisky that I found. I'd best stay in hiding for a while before I come back to sort things out... A prison sentence will not cut it, but the only alternatives are to scrounge up another 600 gold or kill every imperial guard in this entire place.
I could have sworn I saw somebody there when I arrived at the ruins, but he ran off. If I can find him, he may fulfill my vampiric needs... If I can't, I am doomed unless I can travel back to that baboon of a witch before the next day's sun and suck her blood dry!
...Maybe force her to give me that information, too...
There seems to be a bed here, so perhaps it belongs to him. Only time will tell. For now, I seem to have been left in posession of his ale... and there's noone more in need of that than I.
I'm really annoyed about that disappearing Soul Gem (and in fact that whole Sould Gem quest in general, especially since there is no explanation about those things for newbies such as myself, who are left completely in the dark about how to acquire one of them... let alone 5! I have a few simple soul gems, but I can't imagine how to get a Grand one)...but holy witty remark, Batman! This thing is deep! I know there's been running away from authority before, but it's rarely like this!
I learned the way to enjoy this game most: If you screw up everything, don't go back to your last save; Keep Going! It's not like Doom or Freelancer, where screwing up makes you fail because it's excessively linear.
In RPGs like this, it can only get better. If you play through the game without screwing up, there's no challenge and it won't be nearly as awesome. I'm on the run and everyone probably hates me by now, thus (judging by RPG cliches) inadvertently dooming the entire universe? So what! Now I get to be one with the forest people... or against them :P
(Hmm... I wonder if they put effort into those folks who aren't on the map).
Uhm... any hints on ways to acquire the soul gems? I'm not asking for exactly where they are, but just for a general idea of what they are, what they do, and if they are buyable or only acquireable through dungeons or something, as there are no guides at the moment where I could find such information (a good sign?)... And whether I should bother launching a search specifically for them, or just keep my eyes peeled while swallowing people's blood, (which is getting to be a bit less of a problem because it works well along with my role in the Thieves Guild).
You can probably tell that I haven't enjoyed an RPG in ages.
I agree that the Oblivion gates are a shame. I've done two of them, and I've vowed to never bother with one again unless it is significantly different from the first two... perhaps with some kind of fancy epic battle sequence with hundreds of soldiers all charging in. It's unlikely, though. Actually, I just hate overusing of dungeons... they kill the otherwise open-ended and big feeling of a game like this.
Why have dungeons when you can have ghost cities and covert operations between really @#!*ed off factions???
SOUL GEMS
I found that people do sell them in mystic shops. I snuck into one in the imperial city and picked the owners pocket for one whilst he was sleeping in the bedroom at night.
Mages sometimes carry them around in the Mage guilds, and you do find them in some of the dungeons, but they are quite rare.
Soul gems are used to enchant weapons etc, but I havent found out how. They store souls that can be trapped with soul trap spells. You cast a spell which has a duration of so many seconds, and if you kill something in that time their soul can be trapped in your soul gems.
Thats what I learnt so far but have yet to try myself. BTW you may be able to find a couple of the grand soul gems in the witches house if you look hard enough. Whether she has the right ones is a bit hit or miss though.
You can use the built-in console to spawn items - plus you can activate 'GOD MODE'.
I've not spawned any items myself though.
Cygnus, its either where you left it ,or it went to the stables you purchased it I believe.
Man, thats a few hours of walking. It was in the middle of nowhere.
Also, it was one of the Prior's horses.
heh, well you can always jump there on the map, if you have been to the prior you coudl be able to quick jump.
I wasn't going to use that feature, but being a full fledged and starving vampire means that I die within 20 seconds of being out in the sunlight. One thing about this game, I really empaphise with good honest vampires.
The last few days I havent had the opportunity to admire the beautiful graphics of oblivion, instead I've been running around in the dark with night vision, been shunned by everyone, no one will trade with me, not even for quest items if I don't use my once a day vampire seduction spell.
Been driven to stealing, which is actualy quite fun, and I'm curious about feeding to see whether theres a mini game or something, but have yet to try it (the wife won't let me :()
It's a crap life I tell ye!
I agree... I still need 1 more grand soul gem.. an empty one... I grabed the ones in the foyer of the arcane university... 2 were filled... I need 1 more... anyone got any ideas? I looked everywhere..
My Computer started squealing at me.
Computers definitely dislike me right now....
I have finished the Vampire Cure quest... when you do so, and go back to give the cure to the count's wife... he will reward you... make sure you keep asking about the reward... you'll see why... DON'T LET HIM GET AWAY!
suffice to say.. I now own the skingrad house (25gs) and fully upgraded it (at least 50gs more) all on the reward(s)
Hmm, spent most of last night tweaking my ini settings.
Found turning off tree shadows saves quite a few FPS. Then made the mistake of turning on HDR. Lovely - but a 6600GT just doesn't cut it (sigh)
Everytime I sleep now I get the Vampire messege...does that mean Ive already been bit? (havent saved) reloaded and tried in differnt area's but Same thimg happens...now I dont want to sleep...but Ive gained a level..heh
Im curently on the quest for the greater Oblivion Gate Stone,
and still have a Few gates to close to get support for Bruma.
(course they all want you to go close the gate or they wont help) heh
IMO they did it right this time(while the others were good).Dagerfall was too random, Morrowind was to big without enough to ocupy your time along the way, This one seems pretty balanced.
Renews my faith that maybe bethesda wont defile the Fallout franchise..;)
Sam
GO ahead and sleep Zmatrix... you'll get the msgs when you sit still too long too ;)
Got away with it this time, went to the temple in Bruma and prayed and it removed all efflictions, now I no longer get the dream.
By that time I had Wither also..lol
But from what you say I eventually want to do that quest anyway ;)
Next time it happens I will.
Also over in the East (on silverfish river) I found a group of people Paralyzed in front of the statue of a dragon, But it said I need to be 10th level to do the quest. (only 5th)
so anyone thats 10th level might go check it out.
Sam
I never thought of going to the altar to pray.
Yep, it seems unavoidable. It looks as though, if the vampire bite is random (which it may not be), it is decided prior to you going to sleep for some reason. (Which is a bit weird, since it should change based on where I'm sleeping).
god.. 10th level... its'll be hour 80 before I get there it seems... hahaha... awesome
I've turned my attention to the Oblivion.ini file.
One of the things I wanted to do was to increase the draw distance of the grass/ground level foliage, as I hate the draw in. So far I have been unable to see any difference by changing the values for the grass.
If anyone can increase it - let me know.
Puki-
I can see a difference, All i do is go to the video options. :P
Yeh, but I already set it to max via the video options - I want 'SUPER MAX' to go with my 'GOD MODE'.
Puki, make sure you are editing the Oblivion.ini in My Documents/Games/Oblivion. The one in the install folder doesn't change anything.
Finally got my collectors edition in, got through the tutorial cave in a short while, currently playing around outside in the open....all I can say is, so far so good.
Just wish I could right-click/escape my way out of menus, Morrowind had this same prob, hate when I'm forced to move my mouse to click a button to close a menu...
Anyhow, the game is currently killing my 2.21ghz AMD64/256mb GF6800 GT for some reason, especially in the outdoor areas, averaging around 8FPS with near all settings cranked.
(majority of the sliders make no FPS, only one that does make a diff is the distant lands one, and I *gotta* keep that on, game looks dated without). Med texture helped some at least...dont know if it runs choppy due to my processor speed just barely making the minimum required, or my card.
Anyhow, now off to spend a bit tweaking my ini file....and defrag my HD so the intro movie doesnt "get behind" on itself while playing.
(for instance, 2/3rds of the movie plays fine while the last 1/3 at the bottom plays "follow the leader" in a tiled-looking fashion, pretty weird)
Sorry to say, Genexi, but distant lands is definietly the most problematic setting for most people.
You may want to turn that off... or at least turn off the sub options distant trees and/or distant buildings.
You'll get used to it eventually, and then a few years from now when you get a new video card you'll be excited to try out Oblivion with EVERYTHING cranked up to full. (Only to realize how dated it then looks compared to stuff foreshadowed by CryoEngine2).
In my opinion, they did a really silly and lazy job with the distant lands stuff. (Judging by the massive increase in polygon count and the mudy look that they often have).
Here's to hoping then that the first dress will adress the common AI quirks I've read about, along with increasing game performance, as they did with Morrowind.
(well, sorta, Morrowind still has random crashes on my PC >.>)
Thing about distant lands I hate is that is makes the max viewing distance without it look so small, if I could boost that viewing distance maybe triple its current setting so I can actually "see" into the distance may I turn off the actual distant land option.
Just glad the Khajit race doesn't look retarded this time around, although I am a bit ticked off that they resorted to using retextured human hands & feet this time around, rather then their unique properties in the previous game.
(that being claws {they got fingernails in Obliv, wtf, doesn't look good with red/orange fur}, and digitigrade feet, which prohibited them from wearing common foot-wear.
What took me as a surprise though is that the entire game is voiced, when I saw the previews and all I was thinking only NPCs relating to the primary mission would speak, but nope, we got 1.8gb of compressed voice files for everyone, wonder if every NPC is unique, or if they recycle them throughout the journey.....
Hit lvl2 though, and currently getting my ass kicked by the Daedric warriors in the 1st Oblivion Portal you come across in the games main story passage, fun fun fun....now to find out where the hell my AI buddy ran off to near the start.
[EDIT] Actually haven't tried out the sub-options for the distant lands yet because it required a game restart (...)....will try that right after this harddrive defragmenter finishes itself up. I can live without objects in the far far distance, but I need that far land viewable for immersion purposes.
Im level 18 and I have problems killing things in groups (although 1 on 1 I can usually do it). Its kinda ruining the game for me =/ (I'm a Combat Nord)
I have this urge to restart and make a new character but I put 20 hours into this one.
Its always fun though to walk down dark paths and see what happens.
Ed Asner (Lou Grant from the Marry Tylor Moore show... at least.. it sounds like him) does about 50 voices for the game... each NPC has a unique set of them... but... they all sound like him haahaha.
Reg K.... just trun the difficulty down... it doesn't make you a pussy if it makes the game more fun/reasonable... its in the gameplay settings... slide it down to 1/4 and just fiddle with it till it matches your talents...
also Make sure you use the Hard attacks(hold down the mouse button) as much as you can.
Its a slower attack...but can hit multiple enemys.
Im using a claymore and I send smaller enemies flying 25 feet or so. ( they looks like Rubber creatures flipping though the air) heh
in caves and buildings they just smash against the wall.
"Buros"? can teach ya more...if you kept him alive.
I have the dificulty slider about 1/4th also
all the way down...is way too easy.
Sam
i bought it, but it was too much for my computer so i had to return it. :(
Ed Asner (Lou Grant from the Marry Tylor Moore show... at least.. it sounds like him) does about 50 voices for the game...
That was probably a joke, but...
I did recognize Patrick Stewart immediately as Lord Septim. I was not aware however that Lynda Carter did voices and Terrance Stamp did Daedric Lord Dagon's voice. Sean Bean did the voice for Brother Martin as well. I didn't recognize the rest of the cast of voice actors.
great game finished it once (21 hours, but did only the main quest), and I have another char around 40 hours which has just gotten Martin to Cloud Ruler Temple
fantastic game, about time a good RPG came out that didnt have a 12 year old with spike hair destroying everything with a sword 20 times taller then he is
Just became the Grey Fox myself, now working on a few side quests such as the vampire hunter and what not.
The Grey Fox cowl is pretty cool, allows you to detect life for 120 ft, feather, and agility improvements.
Also a member of the Blade Brotherhood, and a Knight of Chorral (I believe its Chorral). All that AND a master theif... Suckers....... They'll never see me robbing them blind!
Grey Fox, Listener for the Black Hand (brotherhood) and I beat the game, also a knight of chorral and a vampire hunter complete... just have the mages and fighters guilds left I believe... 90+ hours
You nitwits!
Spoilers!!
HAX!!! HAX!!!
The Grey Fox cowl is pretty cool, allows you to detect life for 120 ft, feather, and agility improvements.
It's quite cooler for the fact that when you have it equipped, it's like you're playing on another character....just using your current guy still, everyone recognizes you as the Grey Fox, whatever you do with the cowl on will be in the name of Grey Fox, close an Oblivion gate as Grey Fox, and it shall be remembered in his name, not yours. Need to kill someone but dont need a penatly? Don the cowl, kill someone, then take it off. It's that cool.
OK. Got Oblivion. Looks Ok. Plays OK. It's aaalmooost perfect from an RPG design point of view but ...
I hate that everything goes up in level when you level up. I like feeling like I can start kicking but the higher I take my character.
The graphics are OK. Not awesome. I still think Far Cry is way, way better. Why didn't Bethesda license it? I can play it at 40FPS at 1280x1024 on ultra settings and it looks freakin fantastic. Oblivion, on the other hand, is an exercise in compromises to get the best performance/eye candy.
I hope the upcoming patch clarifys a lot of the graphics options and settings. The Oblivion.ini file is huge and there is no gui for it or explanation on what any of the settings do. You are left on your own, pouring over tweak guides etc ... and trial and error. Painful. Again, Far Cry got it right with their very easy config tool.
That said, gameplay is very good at keeping you "in" the world.
I'd really like to see it on an Xbox360 for comparisons sake.
The old $400.00 console VS $400.00 video card dilemma rears it's ugly head again :)

The old $400.00 console VS $400.00 video card dilemma rears it's ugly head again :)
Sorry, my GF7800 GT OC was only 302 from TigerDirect about 2 months ago. Definatly beats a 400 dollar console!
90+ hours
No wonder your that far bud, I am level 7, with only about 20 some hours logged. I dont have a ton of time to play a game (developing is more important, and work, and the family, etc). not trying to offend you, just making an excuse for my poor level ;-)
@Genexi2: I didnt know that, thanks for the tip. I did wear it through the market district by accident, the bounty goes up instantly when they see you :-)
[Anti-Graphics-Rant]
I hate that everything goes up in level when you level up. I like feeling like I can start kicking but the higher I take my character.
Not sure what you mean here.... Perhaps you have developed a better system.
I hope the upcoming patch ...........Painful. Again, Far Cry got it right with their very easy config tool.
Sorry, I didnt buy it to configure it.. I bought it to play it.

Perhaps they know that gameplay is more immportant than stellar graphics??
A Single player FPS gets boring, quick! Farcry was a nice novelty, but got boring really quick. Once you saw the physics work, the lush enviroment, and the interesting AI, you took it for granted from that point on because it was the same old "shoot and ask questions later" game..
Farcry was the house hold name for the first 2 weeks of its release, and then it faded from everyones computers.... Every LAN I went to back then was playing UT, Quake, CS, C&C Generals, Warcraft, etc. But the funny thing is that no one was playing Far Cry tournaments, why is that?
Most of your points are made on Graphics, when in reality, thats missing the whole point of the game. If they wanted to give you a graphics demo, they wouldnt have went to all that work to put a story or self-sustained npc world in there for you...
[/Anti-Graphics-Rant]
I agree with DH, gameplay is king, graphics are a treat.
But graphics gets your attention, gameplay keeps you playing it.
I'm not wasting my money on THAT kind of time-waster!!
Spend like what? 60 bucks so I can be non-productive? Nahh, no thanks...
Bought it and I'm barely into it. At the moment I'm still running around with the guards killing goblins. It's quite difficult actually, I've died soooooooo many times.
by the way... if your system is having a hard time running Oblivion, visit www.oldblivion.com :)
You know.. I've never once been interested in buying a game because the graphics looked nice. Sure, I've marveled at graphics in games in mags or online, but most games never enter my home. I only buy games I know will last me a long time and which I know have great gameplay to keep me interested. Honestly, even the best games start to bore me fast. I need games with lots of variety.
Right now, I'm playing Kingdom Hearts 2, and BOY are there a lot of mini games, and so far they are all great (sept for the Tron Light Cycle game which isn't all that great... compared to the old tron game, which it is nothing at all like)
Games like Oblivion offer me variety in what the gameplay lets you accomplish, and that is the ultimate goal for me... To have a system that's fun just to move around and interact with, yet, is used to allow you to do anything or almost anything you desire to do...
yawn...
Hmmm. Since when did commenting on a games graphics neccessitate a "gameplay VS graphics" argument. For me an RPG should engender a certain amount of verisimilitude. Graphics, Physics and Sound definitely count.
As far as the leveling. If I am a level 20 fighter, goblins that I could kill at level 1 should be easy to kill. In this game they get harder to kill. There are a lot of other RPG's that balance the game by introducing newer harder to kill things rather than making it harder to kill the things you've killed countless times already.
It's strange. It's like I called somebody's baby ugly or something. It's a video game and in that regard everyones comments and critcisms are valid since it comes down to personal preference. Far Cry is beautiful to look at and marginally fun to play. Oblivion is OK to look at and incredibly fun to play. I just wish it looked and ran as good as Far Cry and in "my" perfect world it would and I would shut up :)

Personally, I like that things get harder as I play through the game, I only wish the dev. had realized that you would have to level up to make them stronger, had they made them stronger as you gained the points required to level up, it would have been great, since then people couldn't make the game super easy by staying at level 1 the whole way. or, perhaps, if they had made leveling up not require sleep this time, since it breaks the whole concept of getting HARDER as you play. Most traditional RPGs get easier as you play while making things themselves harder to compensate. This is backwards to how a game should be, however generates a sense of accomplishment, which gets clouded in Oblivion, not longer is being a higher level the goal, having better moves, and being stronger, are. In other words, when you hit master in security, opening chests becomes easier, while fighting monsters got harder and harder, but you are rewarded with GETTING to fight monsters that you never saw before. There must be some way to combine these in a way that an RPG will make leveling both a gain in strength, but a ramp in difficulty over time.
Perhaps.
It is time to retire growth in stats, or significant growth in stats over time, and instead, rely on growth of skills. after all, a swordsman might be able to bench 100 lbs at the begining of a game and only be able to bench 400 by the end, which is realistic and super elevated, perhaps, a max growth to 1000 is fantasy realist. Therefore, if you begin a game with a str of 100 and numbers increase effect at a constant non-exponential rate, by the end of the game a str of 1000 could be gained, a 10 fold only increase.
While enemies don't gain new skills, only gain higher base stats, and even then, not nearly as quickly as you. Perhaps, they won't gain them at all, and the fact that they are small numbers in growth to begin with, means that the first enemy you face off with will still be a challenge if you don't use any skills later on at the end of the game if you meet them in a group of say 5, which isn't a rediculous thing to consider.
After all, when you get down to it, a world isn't really devided into such wildly huge strength differences. In reality, 1 average person with a sword could take out a bear, 1 average bear with a suit of armor could take out 100s of unarmed people. It isn't the strength that determins who wins, it is what they have to use that will really make the difference.
Even in the shallow and broken implimentation of this concept in Oblivion, you see that it isn't how many levels you are, but how well you can counter what the enemy has to attack you with. Which is why you don't face off against mages with spells that can immobilize you completely until it is rational to assume you might be able to resist or counter it in some way. A well balanced character will be able to, and it is that balance that you as a player strive to achive. No longer is just leveling up 10 levels going to solve your poor ability to apply strategy, only getting the right potions, spells, resistances, or advantages will see you through.
Levels become a plot device, and a way to give the player more to do and look at, rather than a way to balance difficulty.
Agree with Mr Damp.
Things seemed to be going well until about level 15 or so, when I suddenly started getting severely smacked about by bears. And mountain lions. Couldn't move without getting smacked by a mountain lion. Or a bear. I move? Here's a bear for you. Really pissed me off.
But it has forced me to start using more varied tactics and spells in battles. And battles can still be pitched affairs, so on the whole I think they've tried something new and it mostly works.
I really like the way that Oblivion manages to be soley skill-oriented, so I actually think the whole concept of leveling up should have been removed and replaced with something else.
Rather than the same dumb bad guys getting smarter as you get smarter, it should have an explanation: As you become more powerful, the weaker NPCs stay out of your way, and the much stronger ones see no reason to bother fighting with you. (Except the bozos, who you just avoid; adding another element to the game which seems to be rarely achieved: You Are Not God).
Since Oblivion isn't entirely demons from hell (a welcome change from lots of other games these days), such intelligence being portrayed by the NPCs makes perfect sense.
So, since they don't really work that way and it's silly to make players think they do, I think Levels should have been completely removed from the game. They could have based things around an overall character skill calculation... or how famous the character is.
I, for one, think that having levels in an RPG is a sign that the developers are making yet another cliché game that follows the same old formula of killing monsters, leveling up, and killing the big bad guy who wants to take over the world.
In other words, it doesn't necessarily mean anything bad, but the very mention of the word "level" can change someone's opinion on how the game operates; it makes people assume that the game will follow the same rules as every other RPG.
I think Oblivion sucks.

Yeah, if I didn't want in the industry really bad, I would shun it as well ;-)
How did you even get into a game producing language anyway, knitting interests?

Strange thing is, my 16 year old bro-n-law still plays CronoTrigger from time to time.... Its no where near oblivian or 'farcry' in gfx, but he still enjoys playing it after already have beaten it a few times......... He also plays FinalFantasy Online... True rpg fans (not me mind you) never compare gfx as a main point of argument, they always talk about the story and gameplay FIRST (something I've noticed in RPG players).
It's strange. It's like I called somebody's baby ugly or something. It's a......in "my" perfect world it would and I would shut up
Nah, just tired of the old "the gfx dont look all that good" comments on decent games. Its very hard for a developer to get good gameplay when they have to listen to gfx debates on games out of the gates.. It eventually makes you believe that you NEED AAA gfx just to get someone to play it....
I think Oblivion sucks.
That's cause you cheated on your first try at it... Remind me to put a catch in my engine to search the HDD of the user for any PUKI refference, and instantly enable 'super extremely hard mode" ;-P
