Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/From Around The World Of Indie 3D

in my travels through the world of cyberspace (yes i do take these trips) outside of the Blitz Continuum, i every now and then, run into things of interest... here's what i've seen lately...

i'm trying to make this sound like one of those news reports you see on the tube... you know, dateline WashingtonDC... etc..etc.. this is Red Ocktober reporting...

from the GameCreators universe... specifically from FPSC land, i ran up on this lil piece that was done by one of the guys... now it's nothing fantastic, but for a so called 'click together' game maker, this sorta stuck out from the rest, as it showed the potential of what could be done with fpsc (a package that is mostly ridiculed and not taken seriously)... anyway, if you have a free minute or two, you might find this... well, cute --> http://www.savefile.com/files.php?fid=1149304

and now from the land of... well, you try and guess what indie dev tool this screenshot was taken from...

decent eh...

until next time, this is Red Ocktober... your roving 3D news reporter, signing off...

Well this is great....

BTW, When do us can see your submarine in action?

just a sec... i'll upload a short video clip...

ok, here's a lil something... the vid was captured with fraps, and is not great quality, but you should get a good idea of how far i've managed to get...

vid 1 - the sub dynamics all done, ocean and environement done

--> http://home.att.net/~subbase1/ProgRept28.wmv

vid 2 - final model of WWII sub for first version done (ready for texturing) and test of fire effect (night)

--> http://home.att.net/~subbase1/ProgRept29.wmv

none of this is really ready to be shown, but hey, you've worse stuff from me, so :)

btw, what vid capture program do you guys/gals use?
i need to get rid of the jerkiness and maybe a slightly better quality... is the licensed version any better at this...

Oh my..... the water is fantastic, wondering what type it will be in the final game.

I'm using fraps too, if I have time I may go store for a hardware capture card, it should be much more slick recording a video via the second computer.

thx yox... most of the credit for the water goes to Fredborg... my water is based on his code, but it has been modded extensively to get rid of the particle clipping for the wakes, and to allow selective reflections, different textures have been added, and few other differences...

after i'm done going over some code that has been generously offered by Cygnus, i may have to do a lil more modding to it to implement Cyg's clipping planes algorithm... THX CYG!!!

hehe, no prob! And I myself must say thanks to Big10P for the clip-plane demo I turned into an include module and Tom for his DX7 dll stuff. I may use that code for a demo soon for you all. My spare time's up for now though. Besides, I recon Red's stuff will look amazing with it!

Cheers Cygnus. Just glad to have written something of use. :P At the time I wrote it, I didn't really have an idea of possible uses, other than for some kind of spawning effect.

Red: the sea does look very nice ideed. I can't really see how you could improve on it. Good job.

Big10p, I used it in that dragon demo me and Paulo did a while back too, the one with the really nice, reflective, non-cubemapped water :) It's more useful than people seem to think!

BTW, I can't see your vid yet, but does anyone agree that cubemapped water tends to look....plastic?

Ah, yeah. I remember that Dragon demo, now - very nice too. ;)

Love the openening shot on the first vid. Water looks great

thx Muz... i hope that when i texture everything, add some piers and a few buildings at the sub bases, it'll look as good as the water, and that it matches the water...

this thing might finally sail after all :)
