I think all that will come with Max3D module..thats why they ignoring this requests for Blitz3D...I cant see any other reason for silence..
But i don't like Bmax :o) I've tried it and i don't like the OO approach. Please odn't reply with why OO is great and such, i'd just like an answer for this. Just a one word NO, or YES :o)
hehe..I do agree.. :))
Probably No unless there's a new version of Blitz3D, but in the mean time Max3D should be BRL's primary work, as well as the BMax langauge standarization.
If you're convinced using B3D, how about pick the DX SDK and a compiler to make what you want?

have you tried emailing blitz support?

As easy as that eh? LOL

No
As learning C(not even C++) takes me a full school year, I use Blitz coz of the easiness to achieve something that should take 10x lines of code that C have to spend.
BMax is, actually, a steep thing for me coz I have to learn OO from ground, maybe this is why some users don't like it.
Since you're the developer, your decision makes sense, as long as you start, it's never too late.

i think everyone who still has a game in progress would find dxtc handy. i would love a yes or no too. ive heard people say its just a case of a few lines of code but if its that easy i would have thought it would be in there now?
This isn't a, make your case for it being added thread. Not to be rude, but i'm only looking for an answer from anyone at BRL. I don't care about BMAX :o)
Please please please add DXTC support!
If you only ever add one more feature again, please make it this one :)

I think you'd better mail BRL directly then have a answer, none can decide it for you except Mark....
We stopped developing our game, And the lack of compressed textures did play a big factor, next to portability.
We've been looking for a suitable alternative for months, looked at torque but aren't satisfied with that.
Bmax3D is too far away, so were currently considering Ogre with Bmax or c++, and looking with interest into what Simonh comes up with in MiniB3D, and Sweenie does with his Ogre addon.
Not sure if either of them intend to make theirs publicly avaliable. So were going to make a start at covering the same ground ourselves.
For those happy to make fairly simple casual games with B3D, DXTC would be a fantastic addition. I've waited too long, and think its time to move on now.
Our racing game squeezed into 32mb of Vram at 640x480 16bit fullscreen. But has so many concessions made in the texturing department, it wasn't funny.
Anyway, despit the fact that we no longer use B3D, it really is the single most useful missing feature for anyone wanting to make a competitive modern looking 3D indie game.

Yep, i think it would be the single biggest thing holding people back. Tis in my case. I'm going to maybe have to have loading screens, or attempting to stream in textures, instead of the free roaming world i had in mind.
I should add "gimme DXTC and Tangent Space Normalmaps" to sig... :) Been asking those for years now and so far no answer. I'm sure that they will ignore this thread too just like all the previous ones.

Since you're the developer, your decision makes sense, as long as you start, it's never too late.
Though, people spend a lot of time and effort in learning a language, sometimes, it's not feasible to just throw all that experience away and re-learn... Learning C++ is bad enough on it's own, never mind DirectX!
Now, since your still at school, you obviously dont pay rent/bills etc... Which is fair do's :)
But step into someone elses shoes that do pay rent, pay bills, buy food and typically support a family. Time becomes money, and re-learning doesnt pay the rent, it doesnt buy the kids new airmax or a XBOX 360!! :D
It's took me (on and off) about 2 years to learn C++ (And I still probably dont know half of it), now, I've moved on to DirectX beginners books, which, I've been at it for a fair few months now, and I can safely say that I probably still cannot achieve anything like I can in Blitz3D (Though, my modelling is bloody terrible)!
So nearly two and a half years later, I'm still learning!!!
So suggesting to just grab a DirectX SDK and a (cough) £80 compiler to do what you want just doesnt cut!
Sorry yoxola, but that's a fact! ;)

Anything yet? please...
Hi Dabz,
Did you read "Tricks of the Windows Game Progamming Gurus" series (book1 for 2D and Book2 for 3D)? I thought it could help you.

if i was a thinking man i would guess that the answer is no.
this is because blitz3d is at a very late stage of development, so adding something major like this is probably a very difficult task.
i think requests like these are very much like buying an old car and then going back to the garage and asking if they could put in some power steering. it's just not worth the job.

It's not a major addition though. I assume it's not, due to the fact Tom Speed got it working by using that .dll
@Dabz:
Well, I have a job at hospital(being a doctor you can assume I'm busy), I paid all my bill and outcome myself, I learn C on weekend school and remote classroom, and I can do things mostly I need(so I'm not smart, I only do things I need).
There's NO excuse to sya you're on-and-off or something, I'm not fulltime coder either, however I belongs to a team that co-wroks together to make what we want(and I am part of the team maintain the IT system in the hospital, so I have to "squeeze out" time by myself).
So, It ONLY personal "fact", doesn't apply to others, I don't know how much hours you learnt C++(and this is not the factor to care), I learn something to use/manage it, not tend to wait till everything is ready.

It depends... IMO there's nothing wrong in "pimping the B3D ride"! Blitz3D has a lot of mileage left, and I like the way it handles and takes corners... BMAX might be new, but although it has more powerful engine it still lacks some vital components like windows, doors and such. And it has more faults and manufacturing bugs.
Wht is the main attraction of DXTC if the main engine is not upgraded to dx9. To me Blitz3D has a lot of power as it is, and is a great tool for the independant developer, pound for pound,as it stands.
People cant expect a developer to support and upgrade a product for ever, we all need to make a living.
That said, a new version that isnt OO based and used the latest technoliegies would be a very good thing although it should be released as a seperate product and charged as such.

i'd like to have dxtc too. blitz3d in its current state is fine. a little step for mark, a huge for the community.

I've never read them Happy Sammy mate, but I'll put them on my shopping list! :)
I'm 'nearly' finished 'SAMS Teach yourself game programming in DirectX', half decent book, but full of 'I remember when...' distractions (And the usual unfunny 'funnies'), it shows you you how to make 2D games using Direct3D! Pretty handy to know! :)
I've just recently bought a new book called 'Introduction to 3D Game Programming with DirectX 9' from WaterStones (Well, I had to order it through them), anyway, a quick scan (on the throne) reveals a very indepth book about the theory behind 3D programming, as well as C++ programming with the DirectX 9 SDK. So once the SAMS one is sussed, I'll move onto that! :)
------------------------------------------------------
Hiya yoxola, listen mate, I wasnt having a go or anything, and when I read your post I just assumed you where at school! :)
Though, I still stand by with what I said... I do still respect your view (believe it or not ;) ), that's the point of a disussion forum... to discuss! :D
If the world was only filled with people that agreed on everything, you'd have no-one to treat on a Fri/Sat night! ;)
Anyway, my apologizes
:)

I don't give a @#!* about blitz3d, it's a poor language when you sit it next to Blitzmax.
I think Mark and Simon should concentrate on making a solid next gen engine, which has a DX9 and opengl Pipeline. Something done properly.
Blitz3D, with respect people, is not gonna benefit from texture compression. Maybe 3 years ago you would have been right.
Not today, for that particular old engine.

B3d will benefit from it though, just not from a business stand-point, as it's main-selling-life has pretty much passed by.
Athough on the other hand people are still producing commercial titles with it, and every little bit of vid. memory saved helps for those crappy lower-end systems with integrated gfx cards.

I disagree with you. With the audiences people using blitz3d are aiming at, texture compression would be wonderful. Shareware titles say at 10 MB or less might only need say a GF 2 or summit, but the VRAM requirements are like 64 MB+. So, you'd really need a better card with more VRAM to run it properly, without all the swapping going on.
You don't give a @#!* about it maybe, but other people do. :o) Hows it going these days anyway mate?

What woul.d be the point of that? Any DX9 compliant card would have such rediculous ammounts of RAM anyway, as to make Texture Compression a moot exercise. I don't give a @#!* about blitz3d, it's a poor language when you sit it next to Blitzmax.
I find myself agreeing with Rob. Disturbing. It might be a poor language, but poor souls such as myself enjoy programming in it, and that's the most important thing ;o). I'll consider bmax when the bug list goes down and the 3d engine gets released.
I agree, that is a good reason.. we want it. :)
I use B3D over bmax right now as well. I can use bmax just fine, but I dont want to use a third party 3d lib when BRL will have one made, if history dictates the future im sure the BRL 3d module will be worth the wait, However I bought bmax, and its collecting dust..
While I wait for it to be fixed up, and the 3d module. More features for B3D would be fantastic, especially DXTC. In fact, if there was just one more feature to go in, I would prefer DXTC.

Apologize to Dabz for my rude words, it's my life, and that's what I choose to do(I can make my life easier if I throw everything about my programming/learning/coding, and concentrate on work, and I still have enough income to fullfill my life)
It's all, excuse me for that.
As to this thread:
Bacause Mark've been here since this thread exist (he locked some topics about someone, didn't he?)
But Mark choosed to keep silent..... who knows he's just ignoring this thread or "trying to do something before announcement", coz he didn't reply to it, might have been busy with Max3D.

As far as I'm concerned, Rob is correct here as far as Blitz3D's benefits go. It is not likely to increase or decrease sales or even affect things in the long run. While it is a nice engine (yes, folks, Blitz3D is an engine [with a language wrapped around it]), this change would not benefit BRL but rather only you.
As far as the long term goes, development of BlitzMax would benefit them far more.
Keep in mind that I'm not opposed to adding texture compression, I'm just stating this from a business perspective. Out with the old, in with the new.
..well..I find Blitz3D very interesting development tool for China market, since 90% of PC's over there is running under GF2 up to Gf4 cards..
Once again, BRL isn't selling to the Chinese, you are. Unless somehow they acquire a percentage of the profit you make from the Chinese market, it's of no benefit to them.
So, to reiterate, just because you make money does not mean they make money.
So, to reiterate, just because you make money does not mean they make money.
yup..thats fine...I'm just saying that this is the reason why I'm going to do some pretty interesting projects for China soon with Blitz3D...I send few compiled shader related stuff done with PR6 over there and they just reject stuff since most of the computers over there cant deal with it properly at all..once I did sample level with Blitz3D (there is also your Lotus involved), they are so happy becouse stuff working very fast on every machine they try it..and thats it..but I do agree..new stuff will come with Bmax3D module and thats the way it is..
One point is China is the biggest software pirating base(and thanks to the confusing government, software pirating is legal there). That introduces to poor software selling benefit....
However that's true, most Chinese have lower standard PCs, so Blitz3D will work pretty great, the only drawback is B3D doesn't support double-byte fonts, a game with local language is easier to get into the local market.

..well..game I'm talking about should be on english (Hong Kong investor want that) and its base on their No1. comic book in China..so, as I wrote already, I sent few 'test' levels done in PR6, but they dont want it since on some machines it use to work on some very slow and on some cant start...when i did similar things with Blitz3D (their test level), everything was so great on all machines that me and my crew almost got job..we will see anyway..
--And in any case simple yes/no would be nice to get... that would stop us asking and talking about it.

I wouldn't be so sure....
If you check out the @Blitzsupport thread, probably now on Page 2, Skid commented very briefly on it, saying he would need to do some research. I'm not saying that means they are now looking into it, but it's nice that someone from BRL has commented on it.
I wouldn't be so sure....
My thoughts exactly. People don't actually read BRLs comments on this board objectively. They read them from their own point of reference. ....hhhmmmmmm, all this reminds me of an old movie.

Lookie here FlameDuck:
Already seen it. That wasn't quite what I meant tho', and it was certainly not intended as a jab at you. What I meant was in a broader sense, not just specificly regarding DXTC in B3D. If it does turn out that Blitz3D does get DXTC, then I'm happy for you. Yeah, it's cool. Just wasn't sure if you'd sen it. Sorry for the bump, been away for a couple days.
