World Jump Day

sounds all well and good... except..

A jump produces an average of 500 lbs of force on the ground, 600,000,000 people would produce 300,000,000,000 lbs of force, the earth has a mass of 600,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 KG or 1,322,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 lbs... that means that the jump will exhert a percentage force of less than .000,000,000,001 % of the total mass of the earth... which is like a single atom striking your body and expecting you to notice.

additionally. The force acting on an equal mass would produce a change in orbit of less than the diameter of the earth, which is 100s of thousands of times smaller than the variance in the earth's orbit as it goes around the sun. A variance that is nearly undetectable, infact, the summer in the northern hemisphere coincides with being the farthest from the sun and the winter being closest to the sun. Since the angle the earth is facing during those times is far more important.

To see any effect, the earth would have to travel millions of miles into a deeper orbit, placing us nearer to jupiter and the asteroid belt, causeing the earth to be pelted with thousands of objects ultimately slowed orbit due to jupiter's massive gravity, and the final destruction of earth as it falls into the sun over a period of 10 million years.

lol

Absolutely crackers.

Mr tricks.... do you mean the site? or my anal reasoning as to how ridiculous the site is?

That's godda pop up on a pub quiz! :D

Dabz

Wouldn't the gravitational pull between the Earth and millions of suspended humans pull the two back together with the same force that they were separated with, when everyone jumped?

17 hours until we crash into the sun!

That site is still up? Haha.

I know that it's a gag site, but it still bugs to to know that
there are probably many dumb schmoes who believe it.

what sheer idiocy... LOL...

ahhhh waht the heck... lets send this big ball hurtling towards the sun... everybody jump!!!!

LOL :)

That's exactly what I was thinking. It's kind-of like installing a big fan on a boat, pointing it at the sail, and expecting it to push you along.

John J....

Actually... doing just that would work... not very well.. but it would produce movement... although.. it would likely be in reverse. HAHAHA

the power that drives the fan would produce force on the boat, if you could capture all the air from the fan in the sail, it would cancel itself out, but you can't catch it all.. and therefor you will move with the fan

2 marbles in space, you toss one into the other, and the energy would transfer and the other marble would move.

If people jumping did produce enough force to equal that of the earth's mass, and the mass of the earth and the jumpers could retain their shape under such forces, the earth wouldn't move very far... and it would have to to cause a noticable effect... it would have to move the earth far enough to be effected by jupiter's gravity, which would slow the orbit of the earth down, causeing it to fall into the sun.... (or at least to break up into the asteroid belt and no longer be a planet... or mabe to fall into jupiter) Either way, it wouldn't be good ^^

besides... if you took all the people on earth at one time, their mass wouldn't even be measurable when compared to the mass of the planet...

now i don't know this for a fact, but it stands to reason, if we were that massive, the planets gravity wouldn't affect us as it does...

... right... huh... well, it sounded good when i was thinking of it...

as for that boat/fan/sail idea... i'm gonna try it on a lil model sailboat :)

@drew - about 470 million dumb people believing it....

This all ignores the fact that there may not be 600,000,000 people living in the areas that should be jumping based on their diagram....

" @drew - about 470 million dumb people believing it...."

I'll bet you $20 that the actual number is in the low thousands
and that the site creator pulled that number out of his ass!

Haha.

Drew... it is more likely that it is a hit counter... with a fudged number to begin with

i signed up and when i clicked send, the number upped, not when i refreshed, so it is not a hit counter, but that number is definitly made up. That guy either has a lot of friends or a lot of crack, hard to tell but i am participating anyway. Woo Hoo! Were all gonna die

well... he could have just changed the number in the code.... started at 400k...

and I think most people that join up are playing along with the joke (like yourself)

thats what i was saying

That guy either has a lot of friends or a lot of crack

I thought you meant that he had his friends join a hundred thousand times or he is on crack and did it himself.... rather than just changing it in the code.

lol
