Apparently Sony are experiencing a 'technical problem' with the 'blue ray' drive!?

They're experiencing an "oh no... what the hell have we been thinking for the last 3 years?!" problem.
Selling the system at a loss of $100 is dangerous -- they would have to either charge massive amounts of money for games, or rely on every single PS3 owner to buy a lot of games. (Or simply give less money to the developers, which is probably what will happen).


Interesting that they're claiming to be running Linux on the thing... it's becoming a very popular OS to put in these sorts of devices!
I wonder if they did that recently to lower the price, or if it's been happening all along...

heh well thats bad news for any of those developers that were counting on shipping their titles in the spring. That many months, I wouldn't be surprised to see PS3 developers go under or port to 360 to avoid bankruptcy.

Things get pretty tough with commercial games particularly when there are deadlines budgeted for.

Yeah, that's about as likely as Windows Vista becoming a stable OS. People will stick with Sony because the Playstation is pretty untouchable these days, PS2 was delayed too, that didn't seem to hurt its success.

I heard that one too... I also read that holographic discs are on the up, I just wonder if Sony think they are supporting a media that may be the next betamax?

Which means that their 'Blu-ray' tech might not send the public in a frenzy, thus, less sales?

Yah, I know there's more to it than that.

So... who else is sick of Sony's constant attempts to make the next media storage format?
I think this is one of the first times that their new & amazing gimmicky format (which you may notice they do with almost every console they make) has had some chance of success due to it potentially being used by more than just Sony's products.

UMD, for example, has gotten nowhere, and I rarely see devices that use Memory Stick as opposed to Transflash, SD cards, or CF cards.

I notice, looking at Blu-Ray.com, that there will be 100 Blu-Ray titles for the Blu-Ray launch!!
This sounds very much like how movie studios are occasionally churning out UMD format stuff as well as their DVD release (Sold seperately!) with their blockbuster films.

The Blu-Ray format itself has a chance of success, since it's more than just Sony supporting it, but the fact that Sony is toting it like toddlers on Christmas (again!) is a very bad omen.

More time to save your pennies to buy the over-expensive ps3.... no thanks, I'll just stick to my 360 and then revolution.

I'd have thought that if Sony used Blu-Ray that it was MORE likely to become a standard.

there's been some good news on the blu-ray front though... Sony has announced that the movies from Sony themselves will NOT have the restriction flag set that will downgrade the video if they are played on a non-HDCP capable HDTV. Which means that older HDTV's will play them at full resolution. Now if the other media makers follow suit, I'll be first in line for a blu-ray player.

AND HD-DVD has been delayed again.

As far as I can tell sony have delayed only because they can't effectively compete with xbox, not because of any other excuse they give.

The big deal today is to have an all-in-one system, like xbox360, play cds,dvds,voicechat,even videochat. sony don't have all that, so i think the delay is totally because of what xbox360 has. it's their only real competitor, unless you know something about Nintendo that i don't.

What that tells you is that they're getting desperate, and will try anything to win in the upcoming format-wars.

I'm sure they'll rescind on that immediately if they 'win' over HD-DVD.

Red lasers have a larger wavelength than the blue ones. Blue lasers can therefore reach smaller gaps and therefore the gaps on a DVD can me made smaller, and read with a blue laser. hence Blue-Ray. However, Blue-ray itself is likely way more than just a shrunk DVD... :)

I'm a bit sick of Sony full stop. In part because of there uncouth methods of trying to get media attention.

They actually pay Graffiti artists to paint PSP ad's on buildings in US City walls overnight.

As well as dodgt ad's in the UK, like the ones in the underground asking people to jump here on the rails and what have you.

Thats before you get to the rootkit stuff last year, they are actually getting sued for breaking a licencing agreement and stealing the code.. Talk about double standards.

And if the rootkit wasn't enough, you have the blueray business that will tie everyone to their hardwarem plus PS3 is getting an itunes like digital media distribution service selling feature films and commercial music tied to their electonic devices.

They also over charge for their home electronics stuff, relying on a reputation they earned about a decade ago.

I'm surprised that a lot of you seem to hate Sony so much.
Compared with Microsoft, and from monopoly performance tactics, Microsoft hasn't got that much right in its career, certainly not within Windows and the original X-Box.

From their current history I don't see how the X-Box 360 will ever be the most popular. I mean, X-Box 360 is out already and I don't see that much to be impressed about.

Enay, I don't think anything made by microsoft would impress you, even if they gave you your own portable holodeck. Just the way you are :)

I never disliked sony till I worked on a PS2 game, and discovered how crap their dev kits and test kits were. And how painful the experience was, being an artist my experienced mostly came from cheap shoddy expensive hardware.

Towards the end we were lucky that sony ran out of test kits, and couldn't guarantee us one within 3 months of our game shipping so we ended up resorting to buying an extra 2 modded retail PS2's for 1/5 the price.

In the Bay area where I worked, most of the developers were developing their cross platform games on xbox first, only doing final testing on PS2.

On PS2 you were forced to run your games over a 10mbit network connection, whilst the xbox had the luxury of direct xbox HD access over a 100mbit connection, so you just copied files to the xbox hd and restarted the level from Xbox debug kit. no messing with a PC and rebooting PS2 to connect to the network, then booting your game other ethernet each time you wanted to test new assets in games.

2-3 minutes (PS2) v's 5-10 seconds (xbox) to check art assets meant you could develop PS2 games faster on xbox, so long as your engine was cross platform.

Yeah I'll give you that, it is certainly the easiest console to develop for. :)

When NRev and PS3 are out, MS will get the position it deserves: Last ;-)

PS3 with its redesigned controller (more like Dual Shock) will make first for quite sure while the NRev with its price and concepts will be most likely become the choice for second console or for more "fun oriented" users.

At least if Sony will ever realize that using regular DVD and an USB based BlueRay at a later date are more than enough.
But hey, they really needed a good excuse, and the BlueRay was one that most believe (although first BlueRay burner already passed testlabs at anandtech and tomshardware and that although they were only prototype)

I would bet, that it is more because the actual production price for the cell is too expensive (analyst guessed something around the final price of the PS3 that was mentioned (400$) only for the chip on its own) until they shrink the production process to 65nm somewhen this year.
Beside the rumors, that the GPU is still not finalized (NVidia just shrinked their die size as well and thus could deliver even more power which is needed after most Devs for PS3 say the same: None of the stuff from last years E3 could be done in realtime)

It's interesting that, everytime the next generation of consoles are released, hardcore game fans say that ninteno will take first/second place in terms of popularity. I guess it's just wishful thinking. Regardless of the cost, PS3 will be the most poular console this round, followed by Xbox 360 and the Nintendo Revolution a distant third.
