That's just laced with humor.

See what I did there?

Seen it before, seems to be only good for one shot :/

>See what I did there?
Nope.

It's a boot. It has laces. Thus I punned. It's not rocket science.

Man, I just found this today too!

However, they really have got xp/vista to boot, partially. As noel said though, its only good for a single boot.

Dual boot?

Since you can get a Mac emulator for windows, it probably seems quite feasible that you can get a windows emulator for Mac.

this is blasphemy. :P

In what way? That a Mac can run a bloaty OS? If it worked well, it would be useful for people wanting to use non versions of Blitzmax on Mac. (Blitz2D/3D etc)

Enay, OSX is a bloaty one too. If your not careful and don't pay attention when installing Tiger, OSX will take up 3GB of HD space. OSX isn't very responsive compared to XP even on a dual G5. And XP runs better with 256mb of ram than a max mini running OSX does. You can barely multitask between simple desktop apps without 512mb in OSX

why do they build macs anyway when people are running XP on it? It's like using a vw-golf engine in a Rolls Royce. BTW are the vulnerabilities crossplatform portable too?
Don't get me wrong, I don't really care about it, but this is kind of funny in a grotesque way.

Why? Simple. Games.

Then switch back over to a nice and shinny OS for simple stuff.

Why do they build Mac's anyway when people are running XP on it?

Because Apple is a hardware company, not a software company. They have stated that while they aren't actively going to prevent people from booting XP, they also won't be supporting it. If you can make it work, more power to you.
Apple makes their money on the hardware, so a windows user buying a mac to run XP is still making them money.

Now, from a Blitzmax point of view it would be very intersting to have a machine run both OSX and XP at the same time, since you can use a single machine for developing & testing (at native hardware speeds, unlike software emulation)

Of course, it will only be a matter of time before there will be virtualization layers like VMWare, VirtualPC, etc. which can do the same. If the underlaying architecture is the same you don't actually have to emulate a CPU/chiopset, but can run them in native mode directly on the CPU, just like another task... Meaning 'emulation' at near 100% of the speed.

Macs are becoming more and more like off the shelf PC's anyway. Looking at the intel macmini it could just as well be any cheap SSF PC.

At the moment if your lucky you will get a 5400 rpm HD, if your unlucky you will get a 4200rpm HD. radeon 9200 or intel chipset, regular ram.

The larger macs seem to share a lot in common with run of the mill nforce motherboards. At the end of the day you really do pay for arguably elegant if sterile case design, and a pretified OS thats as bloated as XP that you have to upgrade anualy for about $130 if you want to keep it up to date.

It still has a lot of potential exploits that are patched on a regular basis, many of which stay around a lot longer than their windows equivalent.

I think the best reason to buy an intel Mac would be so that you could run windows, and port to OSX should you want to.

fact is, the number of viruses on macs is only a fraction of those several hundred thousand viruses on PCs.

Fact is, although apple is not a software company, they have their OS, developed over a long time, while the 100% softwarecompany microsoft killed most homepc hardware companies on the run (atari, amiga, acorn etc.) and apple only survived so far because their death would be bad for microsofts image as a killer monopole, so apple is the flowers at windows windows, so to say.

I agree, the hardware of macs are more and more some kind of customized intel architecture.

Yeah, but I think that has more to do with the fact that Windows is BY FAR the biggest target for malicious software, rather than it being inherently less secure an OS than Apple's.

Just check out the march first patch for OSX to get an idea of how unsafe OSX is.

one update last year had 43 opportunities to compromise someones system and run malicious code. I posted about it here sometime last year.

Why anyone who would run XP over OSX is beyond me.

XP boots on this machine, does not mean that it does anything useful.

I havent used a Mac for a long time, but I do remember a post from Mr Sibly stating that writting code on a Mac was an absolute joy! :)

After that, I thought about buying one... But alas, not enough pennys to make a nice pile of pounds! :(

why anyone would favor a platform with a tenth of the software available to it mystifies me.

It all boils down to: Different people, different tastes.

Personally I can't stand the way many of the things on the Mac work. Sure, it looks pretty, but I waste way too much time trying to find the applications that I lost running in the background, and more...

I prefer the more minimalistic classic windows mode over all the apple eyecandy.

If the Mac lets you do everything you would want out of a computer -- great! More power to you, have fun... Just don't expect everyone else to switch any time soon.

And nothing at all to do with the fact that the world largest Apple software development house is ... Microsoft.

I run both, I find XP is far more responsive and more versatile, OSX on the other hand is much easier to maintain and keep running smoothly. It's also safer browsing the web on OSX - although Safari is hideously unresponsive compared to Avante on XP, despite Safari being multi-threaded for dual cpu support (my work machine is dual cpu, it's still sluggish).

At the end of the day the G5 has just a SATA-1 interface (1.5gb/sec) versus my PC's SATA-2 interface (3gb/sec - although i've RAID0'd mine for 6). It has 533Mhz FSB, compared to my PC's 880Mhz. Sadly since OSX Mac software has become just as bloated as Windows software and in some cases really is just as slow as it's bloated relative.

OSX sits atop Unix, meaning that it's a bugger to fix properly. I've ended up reinstalling some Mac's at work when they go wrong, under OS9 I never had to do that. Under XP it's still quite rare for me to re-install, but now I gotta learn Unix aswell as OSX to repair machines in place without reinstalling... :(
