a card dedicated to doing away with lag.

yeh

There is lag even on excellent connections.

Likely because the person yer connecting too isn't on an excellent connection....

Anyhow, how that company plans to do away with lag, I'd like to know, as I currently cant find anything on their site regarding a possible solution.

go here: http://money.cnn.com/2005/11/02/news/midcaps/bizplan_fsb_1105/index.htm

scroll down to "Third place: Bigfoot Networks". quote:

'A chip architect at Intel until 2004, Beverly developed a computer card that communicates with servers, downloading some of the processes that they perform online and allowing them to run faster, thus speeding up online games. Enrolled at McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, Beverly teamed with classmates Michael Cubbage and Bob Grim to form Bigfoot Networks. Their gaming accelerator card, called NetBlazer, eliminates disruptions caused by server lags. If Bigfoot can raise more money, it hopes to begin selling NetBlazer by July for $300.'

OK Great-

But how is it going to stop people trying to play WOW with a 28.8?

hopefully it'll only work with high speed connections

For something like that to work though wouldn't the server & clients all require the card? Could get costly.

Server, client, and every possible connection in between.

this part cracks me up. how many times have you heard someone whining about lag when in reality, their skills = pants?

'Harlan Beverly has won his share of tournaments in online games, but as a hard-core gamer for the past 15 years he has also suffered the agony of losing. "And it's not my fault," he groans. The culprit, he says, is a technical lag that slows many games when the servers that they are running on bog down with traffic. In online baseball, for instance, this might cause a delay when a batter swings.'

You can't really stop lag though... The physical time it takes one signal to get somewhere, can't be speed up.

maybe he's planning on precaching data?

Sounds to me that it only needs to be on the client side... But the server would have to be written to allow some of the work to be done on the client end. Which... to me... sounds like a hacker's paradise for cheaters in the games.

whatever the case, i don't think they should be calling his company "The Next Google".
