google planning total storage

well we've discussed it a few times and it can't be too far away. The ultimate backup I guess. Wonder what they'll charge.

There is no way i'd let a big corporate have my data, not unless the purchased it :D

Besides by the time it uploaded it would be out of date anyway.

And frankly, what does a 200GB HD cost these days.. peanuts I'd say.. no way I'll outsource my backups. :P

Yeah, but there are benefits to having an offsite backup - if you have a fire, or are burgled, for example.

However, I really wouldn't be happy having my data held by someone else. And the bandwidth issue - yeah, that's something of a deal breaker. :P

They will search through every file that you store with their service and show you text ads that relate to the contents you are storing with them?

I'd never try to back up large amounts of data with them, but I use gmail for all my important stuff now. IE: serial numbers and download links to purchased software.

You can always use something like TureCrypt to encrypt your data before uploading it. That way Google won't have a clue what you store and your data will be safe.

I'd use it. Not for anything large, but it would be useful nonetheless.

Now If I could use the space to host files, I'd be in heaven!

Of course you can always encrypt your files before backing them up...
