Unsolicited junk mail from World of Textures?

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Unsolicited junk mail from World of Textures?

Has anyone else here received some spam from someone pimping "World Of Textures"?

Got it over the weekend and while most spam usually only mentions the 'dsh' username part of my email, this one referred to me as 'Darren Hebden' leading me to believe it had probably been harvested from a forum.

I'd like to think most of the users on the Blitz forums are trustworthy and wouldn't pull @#!* like this but the site name rang a bell.

Yes, I was going to post regarding this. If we can find the culprit I would hope this is a bannable offense.

I haven't received anything that I know of, although my spam filter might be picking it up. I'll let you know if I get anything. I know Tom mentioned something about this.

Same here - referred to me by my full name too.

I got this too.

Hmmm....

http://www.blitzbasic.com/Account/showuser.php?id=4443

Hehe... Wolrd of Textures :D

I got one of those emails myself. I thought they got the address from CGTalk, but that's pretty damning evidence there about that StarForce guy.

Just rude to do stuff like that.

I don't remember getting this spam. I feel vaguely insulted. :P

I got this too.

Now I wish I got it, 'cause that website sucks and so do the textures :/

I got one too... To the email address that I only have listed on the Blitz forums, so it definitely got harvested from here.

good god...

Welcome to filter hell. Next stop? Not my wallet.

He's got himself a copy of Texturemaker - I recognise one or two of the patterns.

http://texturemaker.com/

Even I could do better than those textures and I suck at art.

I also recognize a few of the golgotha textures on there

Yeh I replied with REMOVE. But my addy was fished from here, he spelt my full name the way I spelt it on here only. =]

Yeah I got it too. I thought it was actually nice getting some SPAM that didn't ridicule my manhood, financial aptitude or the time spent working on a degree for once.

Oh and feel free to mock his stuff. I'm not going too, as I doubt I could do better myself.

Oh, and Toby? Never reply to SPAM, you encourage them.

You know, you're becoming something of a bore with your un-asked for advice Flameduck.

Oh no!
You've really asked for it now, Jack...

You know, you're becoming something of a bore with your un-asked for advice Flameduck.
Oh the irony.

Is this where old textures go when they die?

Well indeed.

And my irony is sharper than yours Mr Flameduck.

So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

And my irony is sharper than yours Mr Flameduck.
That's not the only thing.

Dude, mine's bigger.

'Dude, mine's bigger. '

In your dreams.

Not to mention you've been banned from a number of forums just for actually turning up haven't you Mr Cower? General insensitivity was the charge I believe?

Cough. Still, Flameduck has become a frightful bore. He always has to be right about everything. I might agree with what he genrally has to say and I am using his GUI code in one of my games, but still. let's face it; he needs a good ass-kicking.

Almost makes me wistful for the return of the Off-Topic and the Weibo.

For god's sake.

Does anyone recognize the name?

Not to mention you've been banned from a number of forums just for actually turning up haven't you Mr Cower? General insensitivity was the charge I believe?

Nope, just one: Coders Workshop. It seems that people like to make the number bigger each time they tell it. O_o I'm not sure why, but I suppose that's up to all ye who obsess over me.

As for CW, I was banned for 1) posting content that was in 'competition' with products sold on the site, and 2) for calling seth's administration 'lackluster,' which it was (and still is, by the look of things).

I don't see anything wrong with FlameDuck's post..

There isn't anything wrong with it, Lars, FlameDuck just happens to rub MadJack the wrong way. Not sure why, but I have no reason to hate anyone at the moment (other than my father, anyways).

We should write a community DOS revenge tool, a bandwidth bill would be ample justice for the offense. There's a telephone ring tone site I wouldn't mind getting rid of too...

If only we would lower ourselves to that level...

I'd call his ISP and inform them that he's been harvesting e-mail addresses and spamming them. Simple and typically works.

Attack of the Blitzers!

Surely this guy should be banned. Who knows where else he'll sign our email addys to.

Both the website itself and the IP that the spam originated on is 66.235.212.145, which is owned by ipowerweb.com, a californian hosting company...

yes same here, from the email.

There are over 2000 seamless professional textures to choose from, all available at a very low cost per texture.

maybe not!

kev

I've had this one too, very unimpressed that a Blitzer would resort to spamming other members.

Darkheart

Hello.

Yeah, I got it too. I've not lost too much sleep over it.

However, Ivor Cutler has died, which is more important and not something I can create a topic about.

Goodbye.

Hey I never got anything from them.

I've not had that email but have had one unsolicited from a studio offering motion capture...

Hi there,

It's our pleasure to introduce our new motion capture studio - 'xxxxxxxx' to the world of entertainment people. We are centrally located in the Asian country - Malaysia. Anyone want some Agvair?

HEY! What a great idea!! I never thought about getting everybody's email addresses from here. Expect some GREAT and EXCITING offers in your inboxes soon puppies!!!

(I assume everybody who does not change their email address is interested in getting my MANY and GREAT offers until they die.)

Flameduck has become a frightful bore. He always has to be right about everything. I might agree with what he genrally has to say and I am using his GUI code in one of my games, but still
Any URL for the GUI code? (I am a GUI code junkie)

I got it too, recognised some texturemaker stuff (I just bought version 3). Never really thought much more about it, some folks may even find it useful.. It DID make a change from Manhood Resising and Raising Spam that I used to get.

To be honest here I thought I may have invited the email as I visit a lot of graphics websites and have to log in with one of my email addresses.

Maybe the guy thought it was a good marketing ploy, who knows.

I am not going to get upset over though.

Cheers

Garion

He does seem to be learning emailing too...

The rodent never emailed me - I take that as a bit offensive. I am clearly the most important and interesting Blitzer to have ever lived - yet the rodent seems to be scoffing me. Where does he live?

Assuming that's what I think it's for, he's also made a spam bot.

That _Skully! So VERY helpful with those email code archives entries! :-)

Oh dear.

It's scary how easy it would be to do this using blitz.

I won't describe it- to stop the newbies from trying- but I'm sure you can all see...

Expect sales flyers for new XXXXXXL pants in your inboxes.

Any URL for the GUI code? (I am a GUI code junkie)
Just to clarify, it isn't mine. My GUI code isn't done (read: doesn't work properly yet), and is very specific to my current project, so probably not something of any great general interest to anyone (even junkies). I don't believe I've ever made a GUI that would be generally available so MadJack must have me confused with someone else.

@SoggyP:
Thanks for the sad news about Ivor Cutler. When I read that I was beside myself with grief...

... so I just moved over a bit and then it was all OK.

If the land tips, you should run South, everyone said.

The land tipped - and I ran North - for not only did the land tip the wrong way... but nobody tells me what to do.

'so MadJack must have me confused with someone else.'

Argh, I confused Sswift with FD.

In my defence it's probably because I've been here at work 9 days straight without a day off.

the rodent seems to be scoffing me. Where does he live?

Maltby,
Rotherham.

Everyone grab a flaming torch and pitchfork and let's head round there. I bet he lives in a big castle, on top of a moutain...

We might have pitchforks, but he'll have bats.

Rotheram - Mmm.

Nice houses - here is number 9:

Just waiting for sswift to make a comment like "Is that a house or a bunny hutch ?" :)

Hehe. I bet that entire house is smaller than my garage, including almost the entire vertical height too. No kidding.

*yawn*

That's just the front. The house actually extends out from the back for 6 miles.

I am very sorry for the emails

I will make the site free to bb users.

Sorry again

While the email harvesting was definitely uncool, owning up to it and apologizing was the right thing to do, StarForce (now Lessons Learnt) - well done.

I have a suggestion that would help stop this happening again as I can now see and I should have seen that not everyone like’s this kind of email. I hope that this in some way will help.

Suggestion 1) That the forum should only show email address when some one is logged in.
Suggestion 2) that email a backwards and are turned around using style sheets, that would make it harder for bots to get at.
Suggestion 3) have a good Joke at the bad spelling at www.world-of-texture.com and the fact that it has made less than $10 in it’s life time. At that rate I will be a Millionaire in about 500,000 years.

I will be making the site free for bb users this weekend.

Please forgive me!

Suggestion 1) That the forum should only show email address when some one is logged in.
I never log out!

Suggestion 1) That the forum should only show email address when some one is logged in.
It does.

I got one too !

suggestion 4) if you pimp a site, make sure you can't be connected to it!

It's good of you to apologise, StarForce (I hate StarForce too, btw!).

wasn't starforce those toys like the little ones that wore little spacesuits and all. I remember them from when I was young. :)

Apologies are good, but does he really deserve forgiveness?

good god. i'm gonna shove a bomb up your "learnt" ass if your spam use again. now bugger off.

Everyone makes mistakes, Noel.

I can't believe you guys are really doing this.

He didn't have bad intentions, so why are you treating him as such. Also it is a little stalker-ish to look up his address and take a picture of his house. weird in my opinion.

Um, that wasn't a picture of his house. And looking up his address isn't even close to stalker-ish, considering I could get yours with zero trouble.

Everyone makes mistakes, Noel.

He knew what he was doing, so why should he be forgiven?

what do you mean forgiven? isn't it enough that he has been shamed? ;)

Hell no.

and why not, Sir Noel? :)

Because he knew what he was doing. There is no way in hell he did not know what spamming was in this day and age. He knew what it was, knew what he was doing, and still did it.

Why should people who willingly choose to do what is wrong be forgiven?

because he apologised?

No.

Think of it this way: if you catch a child doing something bad, they'll apologize to avoid trouble. But what are the chances of them being truly sorry for their actions?

This person only apologized after he was found to be the spammer, and this was only to avoid more trouble. What are the chances he's genuinely sorry?

think of it this way:

if you caught a child doing something bad, say you knew this child... would you forgive him/her? assuming you don't know if they are "really" sorry but they apologised... why would you not want to let it go? wouldn't it be best to give the child the "benefit of the doubt"... like they do in a court of law?

No. I wouldn't forgive them until I knew they were sorry for doing what they did.

So much for the benefit of doubt...

What doubt is there here that he did this, FlameDuck? The benefit of the doubt only applies to guilt, not whether or not someone is sorry.

lol @ Flameduck. :)

@ Noel C, there is no doubt that Starforce did this, since he has admitted to it. but that's not what i meant. when i said "benefit of the doubt" i was referring to his being sorry, not about being guilty. I probably shouldn't have added the "in a court of law bit" :)

starforce, if your ass is really "learnt", then noel will need a picture of it for proof.

There had better be whip marks.

Noel is king! ;)

The correct term is 'dictator.'

Thankyou Noel.

Noel is dictator!

well, if hes not sorry, then im sure he doesnt give a damn if noel forgives him either, so whas the point in discussing it in depth

there is no point.

Noel started it Sir. :)

I am sorry and have now made the site free

Just click on the thumbnail and get the full size image free.

Jesus. I think the whole point of his email exercise was to make people check out his own personal website and to offer to sell them some textures. It sure as hell wasn't done to sell all your email addresses. It is blatantly obvious that he meant no harm to anyone.

He has no need to be forgiven by anyone of you... seeing as apart from a slighty bad judgment call, no harm was done. IMHO, it's no worse than the rest of you pimping your wares in your Sig's. And yes, I got one of those emails. I can't say I was particularly bothered by receiving an email that, at least, was related to programming and not some penis enlargement or erection potion :) So much for me not posting on this forum again eh?

So much for me not posting on this forum again eh?

Yeah, what the hell are you doing back here? Get out! :P

Lucifer - Sending out unsolicited spam is a naff thing to do. Taking advantage of a forum you frequent and harvesting the email addresses is a naff thing to do.

Like you say, people can and do advertise in their .sigs and if Mr. Trigg wanted to reach Blitz forum goers, then that was an option. Instead, he decided to spam people without their permission and as Noel mentioned, _no-one_ is unaware in this day and age that unsolicited spam is unwelcome.

I don't put much weight in Mr. Trigg's apology either - as the saying goes "It's easier to ask forgiveness than it is to ask for permission.".

You guys really need to go and whine somewhere else, like in the Max3D threads or something.

Darren, I'm not condoning the action, but I'm just, Oh I dunno... trying to be nice which is VERY unusual for me :) I just think he's just a young lad who acted first, thought afterwards. We've ALL been there :)

Oh and Toby... Why the hell would I want to winge about Max3D when I use PB? :)

oh and Noel, I'm not here... you are imagining it :)

Lucifer: Oh sure, and I suppose pigs fly too. You know what, we need a new joke for that, 'cause a pig just flew through my window.

really! I just saw pink elephants :)

Sending out unsolicited spam is a naff thing to do.
It is also illegal. Many states here in the USA have very strict anti-spam laws. The laws are effective and they carry a stiff sentence. The Federal laws are even more severe.

It is also a violation of the TOS he agreed to when he signed up with his ISP. They should be contacted and hopefully do what they are legally obligated to do and terminate his account.

It does.
As has been pointed out numerous times in other posts, these forums are not even remotely secure and the email addresses in user accounts are readily available to people who are not members of the forums and search/spam bots.

At least this guy realizes his mistake and is trying to make amends.

/me shakes his head and walks away... yet another unusual thing for me. Hasta la bisto gravy ;)

This thread still going?

The guy's probably died of old age by now, anyways. :P

It is also illegal.
No it isn't.

Many states here in the USA have very strict anti-spam laws.
US states don't have international juristiction.

The laws are effective and they carry a stiff sentence.
No they're not. If they where, we wouldn't even be having this conversation.

Thinking about it, I got this e-mail too, few weeks ago now, but it still wasn't a match for the delete button which took all of 3 seconds along with all my other days worth of spam to delete.

I don't see what's the big problem?

That's around 20 minutes a year spent removing someone else's crap from your 'personal' computer that you never asked for;)

I guess it's just another job we have to do. Only we're not getting paid for it....

fer chrissake skids... delete this. You delete much less troubling posts. Just a bunch of people beating dead horses here now.

Many states here in the USA have very strict anti-spam laws.

Which unfortunately all got superceded by the federal CAN-SPAM law, which is much more lenient...

but even though spamming may be legal (if following a bunch of rules and guide-lines like no deceptive subjects, no forged headers and working unsubscribe), it's still not moral.

but even though spamming may be legal (if following a bunch of rules and guide-lines like no deceptive subjects, no forged headers and working unsubscribe), it's still not moral.
Is that like the 11th commandment then? Thou shalt not send unsolicited commercial e-mail!

The way this thread has been carried out it almost appears that the guy who makes himself known needs more punishment than the ones who use spoofed mail headers and hide themselves. The ones that actually know they're doing the wrong thing. One guy, probably young, makes a mistake, apologises for it several times and you guys rip him a vagina. I mean seriously.
