This isn't just a normal speed run though, it's two people competing with a crowd cheering them on. You won't believe how it ends!

Er, did they finish at exactly the same time, or something? How come big Mario can walk right over gaps in the floor?

I'm not familiar with Mario on the NES, but it seems small Mario can go faster than big Mario? That doesn't seem right.

Mario has always been able to run over one block wide gaps. I'm not sure if small Mario can do it. And I think small Mario moves faster. Or at least, accelerates quicker.

I'm not sure if they finished at the same time or not. If you look at the screen on the left, and pause it, the walkway appears to have retracted just slightly more than the screen on the right. But when Mario walks over to peach, the text appears on the right screen first. This could however be explained by exactly where Mario landed on the axe, and it appears the guy on the left screen landed on the left side of the axe whereas the guy on the right screen landed on the right.

Determinining who won may come down to deciding what contitutes finishing the game. Is it who touched the axe and defeated bowser first? Or who reaches Peach first? :-)

Seen in before, I think 'Mario' won by a split second.

They got further in 2 minutes I did in two years.

I was about 7 at the time though.

I don't think I ever beat the game myself. I'm pretty sure I got to the last world with the help of the Warp zones, but I don't think I ever made it past the level just before you go underground to beat Bowser.

Heh, whatever the outcome, they were pretty evenly matched. :)

I'm still wondering why are people so excited about the orignal mario speedrun? It's very esay to do. I can't do it exactly like that but I can beat the game in under 8 minutes. And it's not like I play it everyday! So with proper traning you can be able to do the same. Super Mario Bros. is not that hard of the game!

You try playing it against someone else, with an audience! :P

I always died at the part with the huge bullets that fire... that used to make me cry so bad

Playing through the game normally, I always got stuck on those two castles which have the "maze" section inbetween while playing through the game without using warp pipes, always ran out of time because I had no clue it was a maze as a young-un, kept on running through the same section over & over because it loops.

I'm sure that I can give it a shot, just give me enough time to practice.

Yep! Man i loved playing with the GG. On the nes there was little enough memory for you to find your own cheats.

I even found my own cheats on the PS!

...Lets hope they dressed for the occasion, and that isn't their normal streetwear. (Anyone noticed at the end that the players wore Mario & Luigi outfits?)
