Any good for games with a 3500 cpu and 1024 MB DDR 400???

Hmmm 7300GS sounds lower than 7800, but maybe I'm outta touch here.

It may be the same chip but different manufacturers make a huge difference in it's usability so make sure you arent buying a made-in-my-garage 7300. It doesnt come close to a 5200.

£50 sounds like it ISNT very good, simply based on price. Maybe it's all RAM and now power. At the end of the day 256MBis pretty darn good on a gfx card if the card is damn fast and has "fancy" shaders etc. But only for the latest games and you don't even have COD 2 et ;-p

I had a 6700GL in a dual core PC, after much digging about I discovered it was just a 6600GT on a PCI express card with DDR2 ram. Trouble is Nvidia dont support it in the drivers and after a couple months trying all sorts to get drivers to work I gave up cos it spent most of the time not drawing half the poly's and the other half running so hot I could turn the heating off ;)
I recommend looking on Nvida's site to see if they officially support the chipset before buying it, but £50 makes it sound a bit cheap and cheerful imho.

I ended up buying a cheap ATI X1300 with 512megs of DDR2 to replace it, while it's not as fast at chucking polys around at least it draws all of them :)

Yes - should have said it is for my daughter's friend not for me. I have no money to spend on a new pc. This is the card which comes with a Mesh plc.

I'd go for a 6800 over a 7300 if speed was the main factor. Of course, a 7800GT would be nicer, a 7800GTX nicer than that and a 512MB 7800GTX drool-worthy.

Skip nVidia alltogether and go ATi

At the top end don't touch ATI, go with nVidia (more bang for your buck, and at the very top end ATI dont match nVidia's performance).

At the budget end go with the wallet.

And yes i'm sticking my money where my mouth is, I just bought a pair of 7800's.

Nah, skip ATI and nVidia - buy yourself a puppy - you'll love it more than any graphics card.

I've still got an old ATI 9800XT which rocks. Was the nads once.

Nvidia have become very disappointing with their drivers - shan't buy one until that changes.

never had a problem with Nvidia drivers, except for my old GF2 which isn't supported anymore. If your on a budget the 6600GT is still a good card, even after all this time. had o problems so far.

The only problems that come from Nvidia are when you try their Beta drivers, Usualy one or two released a week.

Sometimes nVidia take flak for their drivers because we forget that we're trying to run them on a graphics card made by somebody else - it's the manufacturer who should really provide the drivers but often they are Mr Jhong Chow for the 3rd village on the left.

That's the one downside of nVidia. They're still better than ATI for support though, ATI where responsible for almost as many graphics card calls as Hauppage for me when I was a PC techie - and Hauppage really where bad. Perhaps worse than that, awefully bad maybe.

the amount of memory doesn't always tell a whole lot -- The Radeon 9600 series is/was available in both a 128MB and 256MB edition, but realistically you'll run out of power long before you'll run out of the 128MB... Games that needed more were unlikely to run smoothly on a card of that generation anyway. I ended up picking the 128MB 9600Pro card over the 256MB 9600 at the time, they were pretty much the same price.

Just because a feature looks better doesn't always mean it actually gets used... Being able to 'trick' more people into buying it can be reason enough to slap some extra memory on there, no matter if it makes sense to do so from a technical point of view.
