Outlook Express Poop
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Outlook Express Poop
Gah, I just exited Outlook Express and it did it's customary compact thing. Then I went back in and discovered it deleted all my sent box items since Dec 20th. For God's sake M$ can't you get anything right?! These emails were quite important as they contained legal proof of various discussion with developers and publishers etc. Tried some recovery software but it couldn't find the missing emails.
Luckily I backed up last wednesday, ahh :-) But still missing 5 days worth, oh well ... And I was thinking about doing a backup earlier!
Next time it asks to compact, I'm going to leave the dialog on-screen and go into the folder and back the files up and then check they are all there afterwards! I read on the Internet it asks every 100 times and this can be set to 0 so it never asks.
Well Outlook Express doesn't smell so bad but poop is generally more useful !
I rid of Outcrap Express ages ago, been using Mozilla Thunderbird since, never regretted it.
hmmm, it's just I'm so used to Outlook Expletive.
Anyone else prefer Thunderbird?
No harm in just trying Thunderbird, it works alongside Outlook with no problems, so if you want to give it a trial run there's no harm in doing so, it also works alot like Outlook so there shouldn't be any problems adapting to its setup and taking advantage of its features.
sounds cool.
Thunderbird is the way to go. All my systems have it and it's not failed us yet. It also stores stuff on disk in a very sensible manner meaning it's @#!* easy to restore individual messages from archive if needed.
so another Tunderbird vote. Seems like I should ditch M$ and go Mozilla all the way.
It could be worse...you could be using Lotus Notes. Trust me on this one!
I do have Lotus Notes installed and being an ex-IBM'er I still reckon it's the best collaborative software out there!
Notes Rocks!!! (and it runs igLoader)
Another vote for Thunderbird here. Never failed me. Also give Firefox a try if your not already using it.
Jason.
Lotus Notes lol, that was a bundle package right? I trained an old lady on it on her IBM Activa once, remember those?
I only use Firefox for PrOn, oh and igLoader testing of course ;-)
Anyone else prefer Thunderbird?
Yes.
Thunderbird here, all the way. Big advantage is I know where it stores my email (ie, in a clever and obviously useful place).
If I want to make sure I keep an email, I forward it to my gmail account. All my software reg codes go there. All the sourcecode gets backed up to gmail (passworded RARs) as well as other places.
If you 100% need to keep your emails for legal type stuff then you should invest in a small mailserver machine on your LAN with RAID1 or RAID5 storage. Not expensive these days. All you need really is a low power computer with 2x80GB drives and a recent-ish Linux distro.
thanks vp, but that's not really needed for me. I just back them up and store special emails in my company folder which gets backed up all the time and burnt onto DVD every so often as well.
Thunderbird for me too
You can get those emails back - windows won't delete them. look through your microsoft identities folders (system unhide first) - they'll be in the outlook folder maybe as a DBX file I can't remember, but you you can simply re-import them...I have the exact procedure somewhere. I'll take a look.

Hujiklo: Thanks I already know about the dbx files, the problem was outlook compressed the files and screwed up the index and deleted some emails. I tried some demos of dbx repair software but it didn't find the missing ones.
Great Censorship!
lol, only just noticed that.
