Favourite Arcade Game?

I was up a mates and he was playing Pac-land on his PC (MAME), anyway, I used to love playing this and when he give me a blast, I was hooked again! :)

I don't know what it is about Pac-land... It's pretty simple, and pretty tough, and above all, it's a joy to play! :D

I havent played on an arcade since, well, SNES era, but my 3 faves that spring to mind are:-

1) Pac-land
2) Snow Brothers
3) Spy Hunter

god there's so many. I did love Gauntlett and also Golden Axe oh and Tekken amongst a zillion others.

The arcade games with fondest memories for me has to be school dinner times spent down the local swimming baths playing Moon Cresta and then progressing to Track & Field in the pub during dinner times.

alien vs predator is a goodun, xmen! (side scrolling 4 player beatumup), errrrr super side kicks

CENTIPEDE

Hey! Pacland was so cool!!! I was never too good at it, though, but I used to watch people getting so far and knowing all the little secrets (pushable cactii and stuff!)

As mentioned up there somehwhere Golden Axe! That was awesome, completed it a couple of times.
Space Harrier, Gauntlet and Gauntlet 2

I also loevd the 4-player TMNTurtles game based on the cartoon. I prayed that it would get ported onto home platforms but it never did.

Chase HQ, Outrun and Star Wars were other favourites, along with Starblade Alpha. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter ate lots of pocket money too...

2-Player Ikari Warriors, R-Type (come on! RTYPE YAY!!!), blimey... Id nearly forgotten half of these....

There was a sideways scrolling ALIENS game, where you played RIpley and there were a couple of levels where the scrolling would go INTO the screen when you were in a vehicle! Hell that game was LONG took me a good few 10p's to beat that one.

It greatly depends what era we're talking. I mean, right back in the day, Space Invaders used to be in your local chippy, all black and white and 10p a go :D Loved it... couldnt get enough of it hehe

I remember Space Invaders.. lol, I had to stand on a chair to play it, because I couldnt see the screen! :)

I was kind of lucky in that my friends dad owned a coin op repair and leasing company. So we all got to play the games free of charge.

The one that I remember most fondly was the Donkey Kong Junior @#!*tail table that Mark had in his living room one winter.

Other than that, the first that really blew me away was the old starwars cabinet, which was one of the first to use sampled sound. That was really cool for a kid like me. Prior to 1981 I lived in Egypt where there wasn't an arcade to be seen anywhere.

My first go at playing an arcade game was on a holiday in Sciathos in the late 70's. where they had space invaders. That was about the same time I got my first electronic game, without any graphics just red dots, with the largest brighter one being your ship.

I remember seeing TMNT for the first time in arcades. I was amazed by it. It had an animated intro, and the screen was huge, and the characters big, and there was cooperative play, and they had all the original voices... It was great.

But you're wrong. It DID get ported to the consoles. There was a version for the Genesis and the SNES. There may even have been a version for the NES, but I'm not positive about that. I do know though that there was a TMNT game on the NES which was side scrolling and you had to drive the turtle van around to different manholes in an overhead section to advance through the levels.

There was this old game by atari I think(?), where you drove a car with guns on it. Kind of like a pole position but with guns and upgrades you could pick up( and better gfx ). I can't think of the name though... someone help?

House of the Dead and Mortal Kombat. Those're the only arcade games I've played and enjoyed.

Incidentally coin ops used to vost 10p a go (£1 now by god!) what did they cost in the US a Dime or Quarter?

Oh yeah I'd better add shome shooting games to my list like Virtua Cop, Time Crisis, House of the Dead, Vampire Night etc.

The standard fee in the late seventies / early eighties was a quarter.

Yeah I guess a quarter is around 14p now, depends on $ to £ rates then I spose.

-brief note: we used to get to play most of these for free during my final year of high school as one of the smaller independent video game arcades had piles and piles of '1 free game' vouchers for another rival video game arcade which they let people just come and take...strange business practice I guess

Bombjack is a great game. I even used to make (pocket)money playing the arcade version. :)

The game gets insanely fast/hard on later levels. You can give up any thoughts of collecting the bombs in order, then. :P
