I was downloading Windows Vista Feb CTP last night, went away, came back, have 5mb to go and MSDN is down for maintenance!!!!! 2.8GB is the total - can you believe it!!!!!!
Vista Download
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Vista Download wow - you can download vista?
Yep, have an MSDN subscription at work. I just cant believe that it probably another minute tops.
Large.
Let us know what it is like.
Feel free to pop into IRC and give us a running commentary.

There's nothing worse! :)
Dabz
I'll let everyone know how Blitz runs under Vista next week. I'll use Mark Incitti's GridWars as the test.
The only thing I don't currently have is a DX9 video card so I can't do the fancy aero stuff.

I want to know now - can you not webcam feed your screen to us? I want to observe.

Puki, your a sick man brother!
I've not bothered with the newer release of vista- Beta 1 ran blitz stuff fine, :)
heh, you think thats bad, my mate had to reinstall OSX on his mac, and missed a couple of options. Ended up with a 3GB install. A large chunk of which was printer drivers!!!!!!
Just wait till you find out that MSDN is down because they're updating the Vista install so you need to restart :)

Man, why would you want too? 2.8GB?!?
Does it have a pre-rendered intro sequence or something?

meh bloated...probably 80% drivers..
backdoors for the next 10 years, that's a lot of data.
2.8gb? and they use the name "Micro"Soft? that's does't make sense they should call them GigoSoft ;)
Wow, thats a lot of pointless icons, encryption, and drivers...
I look forward to the new answer for the lame SAM files. Hackers are waiting with anticipation.

It needs more space to hold all the DRM shackles.
So it's official then, not only is Pista clearly the next generation of bloatware, but it will probably have to be distributed on a DVD! Man that is so bad :)
I wonder if it has a pre-rendered ending sequence (for the blue screen of death)

Vista has been released?????
I hope not... I'm still on 98SE! :/
This version is feature complete and contains the full enterprise version (basically the whole shedload).
I've finally downloaded it - had to start again for some reason. Just about to install!

Sounds good, look forward to seeing some reviews of the latest version. Wonder if they will have a public RC before it ships.
And don't forget the best thing of running a pre-release operating system: any critical security bugs are the lowest priority of all OSes, since its not in use by the general population... meaning you're longer at risk than everyone else.
I'd ever think XP is bloated enough, now we have a new winner :p
How on bloody earth did they manage to blow an OS up above one CD -THAT- much!!! I can't imagine drivers being the answer... unless MS have started distributing the garbage programs companies shove in their drivers, for like... every single product ever released ever. I mean, XP had an intro anim and it still fit on a CD, so that couldn't even be it.
If its anything like mine (OEM) then its probably packed with shovelware like AOL, Napster, and the likes.
2.8GB is significantly OTT..
* The more code you have the more bugs you'll have
* Installation time will no doubt be 6 days
* I dread to think how much space is used AFTER unpacking
Look on the bright side though - At least you get a 3D notepad. Yes, I too cannot imagine how I coped without that.
I wonder if MS are giving the user a menu option upon installation? This would be nice but I'm not holding my breath ...
===================================
Install Options:
o Minimum installation
o Typical
o Bloated with 3rd party addons
o Hurt me plenty
User Experience:
o Whats a PC?
o Give me 600 popups warning me I'm gonna screw up
o I've been around the block so I don't want you holding my hand

"Hurt me plenty" LOL!
well OSX comes on a DVD with 2GB of drivers, and windows is compatible with much more than OSX. Most of the Max drivers are printer drivers.
I wonder why Networking makes up around 60% of Windows memory usage.
Ok, been having a little play the last couple of days. I must admit it does take a little getting used to - but that's no different trying Linux or OSX I guess.
The installation was very straight forward - not a lot of user interaction compared to previous releases - is quite slow though. I need to check out the 'other' install mode that uses some sort of image, apparently much faster.
The sidebar - don't really like it so far (too big). I think those who have a wide screen view will probably get some use from it, but doesn't really fit with the standard screen sizes.
To answer some other questions, the base load is around 8GB, but remember this release contains the kitchen sink, so other releases may be smaller?
From a BlitzMax point of view, it all seems to work as expected. Of course, the OpenGL side of things are very slow (using Mark Incitti's GridWars as an example). But re-compiling it under DX - great stuff! It seems to run faster than under WinXP. The GUI stuff seems to be pretty standard - the IDE works as expected.
Will add some further info once I've had a better play. My brother has a laptop with a DX9 compatable video card and rekons the 3d aero stuff is very impressive. Looking forward to seeing it.
Also, Paul Thurrot @ http://winsupersite.com will be writing a review which will be available in the next couple of days.
No flaming you OSX zealots!

Does anybody know what the realistic minimum specs are going to be to run Vista?

yeah- 8gb? Where the feck did that come from?
Even getting XP, 64-bitting it, and upgrading its features to max it out, wouldnt hit even half that.

Gee... Those of us that were saying how bad a move to OGL was are thus far vindicated in our concerns.

Nah, you simply have another reason to switch to Linux.
there are 6 versions of vista. Ultimate gives you the whole kaboodle. Theres a base version just for web browsing, email and office type tasks, and no bells and whistles, through to multimedia version, gaming, business, advanced business and server. plus ultimate that gives you everything.
Something like that anyway, too lazy to look it up.

My understanding of the vista opengl situation is that Microsoft provides a generic opengl driver, just like they do now. Except it now sits on top of directx( and should at least be better than the current crap ms one ). Its still up to the videocard vendors to provide the optimized gl drivers.
I could be wrong, but thats what I took from it last I read.

Ever tried OGL on a WinXP machine outofthebox (no gfx card driver installs)? It's not pretty either. There is no difference yet as far as I can tell.
As long as they don't throw OpenGL out entirely or make it stupidly slow. Almost all 3D and CAD software use it.
The six version thing I just find stupid. They say they want to make the user experience simpler, that is if the user can figure out what version to get. :/ Couldn't they just have stuck with server and normal (with normal having Idiot mode and Geek mode).
