Mario 64 beaten in 16 minutes, with only 16 stars collected.

Sure, it's done with an emulator so he can reload from just before he makes a mistake... But still... Impressive!

The jumps the guy pulls off in many circumstances are amazing, even with an emulator to help him out, and he uses all these crazy exploits I didn't know existed to skip whole portions of the game!

Bonus:
Real life Katamari Damacy!

This I gotta see. I once sat down one day and 12 hours later, and 70 stars later, beat the game.

Later...
Simply amazing. I mean, I know that you could do all of those moves, but I just never thought to try them in the spots that he did (nor would I have succeeded...).

And I definitely didn't know you could do that trick with the stairwells.

I can't see it here, but tell me- Did he jump up the castle walls? on the outside? :)

I found a video claiming to be this a few weeks back but it turned out to be fake.

Cyg:
No, he doesn't. I was hoping he would. I've heard for a long time Yoshi is on top of the castle, but I was never able to come even close to making it that far up the wall. I think though that in another Mario game which has the same castle they put Yoshi on top though and made it so you could get there. I seem to remember a picture of that.

Yoshi IS on top. I've been there. He gives you a 100 credits for speaking to him.

I tried a long time ago to 'climb' the castle walls by jumping up the side but I could never do it. I eventually got to the top using the cannon that opens up after the 120th star is collected. (Note that you CAN climb up the steeple part of the castle though, simply by running up it.)

I've met yoshi on top of the castle :) there are a pile of 1-ups before you reach him, then he gives you a ton more.

Hate how they fixed that in Mario64 DS, and yeah, Yoshi is on top of the castle. (well, only in the original N64 version)

Saw that vid quite awhile ago, loved the butt-sliding exploit up the ramps.

I remember getting 119 stars (without cheating) and not being able to figure out where the 120th one was. Out of frustration I turned to the net, to find out I needed to do the ice slide TWICE... doh! You got a star each time you beat the guy to the finish (was it a huge penguin you raced?).

I still, at least 7 years later, regret cheating to find the last star.

yeah, it was a huge penguin, A huge penguin who hated it when you cheated too ^.^

That's what I love about the 3D Mario games. Using the assortment of acrobatics to get Mario to crazy places. My imagination just runs wild with that stuff.

That vid is wild. I watched about half of it.

Do you think they played the game in slowmo, somehow, on an emulator? I don't see how this could be done, otherwise. The speed and accuracy of the jumps/movement is unbelievable!

Some of that stuff can't be done. I'd have to go back and test it but I really don't think a lot of it could be done. For example how he defeats the second boss. I don't remember being able to jump up directly through him. You had to jump around his side otherwise you couldn't hit him. I could be wrong though ... I just don't remember having that ability.

I am able to beat hmi like that by diving under his legs, both in 64 and DS- seems a bit iffy in DS though.

yeah that's crazy! I love all the jumps in the sky! I alsway wanted to play that game but never got a Nintendo 64. In the end years later I payer Mario Sunshine on gamecube which was pretty good.

I feel sorry for ya Grey, Sunshine just doesn't compare to Mario64, back when Mario64 came out, there was nothing like it, it was a graphical feast for the eyes (at that time), and was a playground of fun for all platforming enthusiasts, mainly because the level design was great, and the controls were so damn tight, along with all the acrobatic moves Mario has.

Sunshine is good in its own right, but it just somehow lacks that feel I got from the N64 rendition of the franchise.

I can recall diving between Bowsers legs as well here, but unsure about the actually method as to how that player did it.

big10p, it was a tool assisted recording via means of an emulator & macro-editor, the person likely had access to a panel with functions like rewind and such to perfect all the exploits & uber jumping maneuvers, then played back the final macro recording and saved it to a video file for public viewing.

one of Sunshines moves was just a bitch too pull off, rotate the stick in 360 degrees and jump in the direction you want extra high spinning, it was just WAY too hard to do easly on.

"That vid is wild. I watched about half of it."

IMO the second half of the vid is even more wild. Like when he runs up steps backwards by hopping, at 50mph.

"For example how he defeats the second boss"

I don't know about all the crazy stuff he does, but I don't think any of it is faked. The running up the stairs backwards at high speed might be really hard or impossible to pull off without slowing the game down, but I suspect that it too is a trick people have managed to do. I'm pretty sure I have heard about that boss trick, and I seem to remember the trick at the start with the bomb to get through the fence. Also jumping through the ceiling in some parts I seem to recall is possible.

Yeah. I remember when I first played Mario 64 I was like a minute into it at the store thinking "Holy crap. This is how all platform games are going to be soon, and it is going to be awesome."

As for Mario Sunshine, I own it and I have not finished it. I have heard nothing but bad things about it. "You'll love it, until you hate it." they say. Ie, it seems good at the start, and then gets boring, or frustrating. So I just haven't been in the mood to get back into it.

Speaing of fun, I played that Mario soccer game today at the store. That seemed like it could be a lot of fun with two players.

"Holy crap. This is how all platform games are going to be soon, and it is going to be awesome."

Too bad next to all of the current platformers nowhere meet the "acrobaticness" of Mario64 that made it what it is, all I see are platformers with guns, action games pretending to be platformers, and platforming using the same damn wall-based maneuvers over & over & over & over...(I'm looking at you Prince of Persia:SoT)

I think one of the main problems with Sunshine was that the old setup used in Mario64 just didnt work, having to repeatedly get sent back to the town hub each time you collect a shine is retarded, even though the levels are setup differently depending on the shine objective you select to grab.

Here's to hoping the "New Super Mario Bros." for the DS does well, as it's really shaping up from the videos I've seen.
(2d platforming using 3d graphics & nice use of a physics)

[EDIT] As for the butt sliding up to the last bowser stage, I believe that is actually doable on the real system if you got a 3rd party controller with a turbo button installed.

I actually like Sunshine better than 64. Mario 64 gets a bit boring at times compared to Sunshine for me. People complained about the challenge of Sunshine but i welcomed it. Of course I love that water pack/jet flying mechanic in case you couldn't tell.

yeah the jetpack and rocket was cool. I did actually finish sunshine, cos I played it with my 2-3 year old (at the time, he's 4 now). It was v.hard at first then I got used to it, but some of those sub-levels in the sky with rollers on etc were REALLY hard, for me anyway. It was pretty good but I did get @#!*ed off with it a lot actually. The water effect is amazing btw.

I never got into playing Mario64 but I absolutely loved Mario Sunshine - apart from the lame ending. To begin with, I hated the 'void' levels because I thought they were just too hard. I soon changed my mind and loved them when I realized how well they were constructed, and that you can always find an extra life near the beginning somewhere, so you basically get a free go at trying the level. And God, did they get the adrenalin pumping, or what?!

Ive got my GC set up by my new 32" TV.

I know, to all you from across the pond, that "isnt that big" but best ive had was a teeny portable till now :P

Might go play with Sunshine later.

Got a broken thumb? :P I can do that easily :)
BTW, finished the proto.

yeah, esp when you died BEFORE getting the extra life!!! They were great, but hard, and annoying, but great = full circle man!

Got a broken thumb? :P I can do that easily :)
splutter!!!

Well, a majority of the void levels had an extra life a very short and easy distance away from the start. A few didn't, though, if I remember correctly. Some levels did get a bit annoyingly frustrating, but that just made the feat of completing them all the sweeter! ;)

I found the void levels average in difficulty, now, what I found near impossible, is doing the 2nd take through them where yer timed to run through them again, "while" collecting 8 red coins.....I gave up trying to collect all the shines sprites (beat the game itself long ago) because of the extreme difficulty of some of them.

I loved doing that jump-spinny move when riding a Yoshi, while also making Yoshi spit out the juice stuff at the same time....

Oh yeah, I had forgotten about that, TBH. However, I'm not usually great at playing Mario platformers, but I managed to do 'em all, eventually. That increasing tick-tock of the clock didn't help much, though - bloody nerve-shredding. :P

now that's what I remember as bitchin' the red coins on the level with the sand blocks that fade away ARG!!!

I still, at least 7 years later, regret cheating to find the last star.
Especially since you could have figured it out on your own. Every level has 6 stars plus 1 more for acquiring 100+ coins on that level. If you didn't acquire 6+1 on that level, then you knew what level you would have to search to find it. That is unless that star was one of the 15 secret stars...I don't remember if that was a secret star or not.

Wow, nice video!

I forgot how much the DS version improved upon the N64 version...

I like how he actually solved the mystery of the infinite staircase instead of just waiting for some arbitrary timed solution :P

Is the DS version as good or even better than the N64 version? This video is freaky.... I remember spending hours and hours just playing to get another star, and he just freaking beats the game like that!

The DS version is decent, but it lost a bit of the tactile feedback only a true analogue joystick can provide. Not to mention having to start the game off as Yoshi for the first hour was a bit of a turnoff for me.
(you had to swap between the 4 characters later on in the game to collect specific starts, not to mention they changed some sections of the game to suit their means better)
