3D modelling tools
Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/3D modelling tools
Hi,
I want to be able to do 3D stuff by the time Max3D comes out but am a bit lost to which tools are good to use. Normally when it comes to tools I would go for the free ones, but I tried the free ones and didn't really like them that much. I tried the 3D world studio demo and decided I would probably buy that when I have the money. But that still leaves something to model characters and stuff with. So are there any (not toooo expensive) tools that anyone could recommend?
Thanks,
Matt
Have you tried Blender?
If you're on a budget but can still afford tools: Silo for modelling and Blender or Fragmotion for animation.
If you're a cheap git who can't afford anything: Wings 3D and Blender.
This should go under Content Creation, by the way.
Hi,
I've the same problem. So my opinion is : Blender is the best Modeller but there may be problems by exporting, so the best solution for me is Anim8or thogeter with the AN8TOB3D converter.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Yeah, I kinda forgot that one existed.

Yeah I was having trouble with that when I tried it. I was using the Eliza mod for BMax and I was getting memory errors when I tried to use a model I made in one of the Eliza tutorials.

You cannot beat MilkShape for ease of use... I'm a bit of a 3D modelling newbie, and MilkShape is a breathe of fresh air!
If you get MilkShape, try and hunt down 'Mikes MilkShape Guide For Bloody Newbs' (It might not be called that, but its close)... I found this guide invaluable when I was starting!
Never tried Blender yet, though, when I get a little better, I might give it a pop!

MilkShape was good back in the days of HL1 (well, it was OK for the price), but now it's really lacking with the many alternatives that do the same thing and better (Silo, Wings 3D, Blender, FragMotion, etc.).
You can't even select vertices in the perspective viewport. It's pathetic.
Sure, In easy use and export/import Milkshape is the best. But I had some problems with animate. After all u can use it specialy good as a great converter thx to the export/import possibilitys.
Yeah, I have to agree there. If there's one thing Milkshape is good for, it's converting models. However, given a robust art pipeline (i.e., mine), it's useless to have a converter.

Yes, you can.
I agree with the rest of of your post though. ;o)
If you first start out, use MilkShape... If you know the score with 3D, use a more powerful modeller... No point jumping in at the deep end if you cannot swim is there?
That's my point of view anyway!
