CrystalSpace

Any comments about it, speed, stability, etc... any reccomendations on anything better?

Slow as hell, unstable as hell... basically, that's how it's been for the past 5-6 years. I've kept tabs on it and, frankly, they've been trying to improve it but it's dying slowly and painfully.

If you want an open source do-it-all engine, look at Nebula 1 and 2.

I tried Nebula2 and it was pretty cool. My only grumble about it is the lack of tutorials, but the maintainer Bruce was nice and offered help whenever He could.

Its sad that CrystalSpace sucks so much, converting it from a software engine to a 3d engine really screwed them over. They're sponsered by ATi so I dunno why progress in cleaning up the engine is so slow.

Are they still displaying those screenshots of that game that was being made with it years ago?

*Edit*

Looks like they've got some new, nicer looking ones there too

Didn't touch it for years... too slow in comparsion to today's engines, as to open source ones, Irrlicht seems to be far more powerful than it.

..take look at Kjapi 3D game engine...

Links people... links!!!

well the kjapi site hasn't been updated since july 2005, which makes it a bit dead looking to me

Irrlicht and Ogre3D rule CrystalSpace out without a problem.
If you need one for an MMO like environment, search for GDK, an Ogre based "engine" specially made for MMO

yap ogre has make a big step into future

Dreamora: That's 'Realmforge', not 'GDK'. 'GDK' is just an acronym for 'game development kit'. The problem with Realmforge is that it does not (technically) use Ogre, but Axiom. Axiom is a C# rewrite of Ogre which is unfinished and still highly unstable. Same applies to Realmforge. They're both too early on to really be considered for use.

I think the funny part is that they've both been in the works for so long and neither is really worth using yet.

The Realmforge GDK project took over the Axiom engine some time ago. Thats why Axiom is no longer updated. Realmforge now develops it as part of their kit.
