Free FTP programs

Does anyone know of any good freeware ftp programs ?

Avoid SmartFTP, it has (always had) issues with reliability of transfers.

Just use the FlashFXP demo... you may find you want to register it after a while (I did).

For Windows, get FileZilla.

Windows has it built in too ...

* Go into My Network Places
* Double-Click 'Add Network Place'
* [Next]
* Enter ftp details:

ftp://username:password@...

* [Next]
* Give the network shortcut a name
* [Finish]

A shortcut will now appear in My Network Places
Double-Click this and (all being well) a folder-like window will open. Now you can drag/copy/delete/rename files just as though they were on your hard drive.

Or you can simply use Internet Explorer:

ftp://username@...
will pop up a password request box, or you can bypass that as well by using:
ftp://username:password@...

Simply drag & drop like you would with any folder on your own computer...

For Windows? Um, dunno; it's been a while since I've done any FTP'ing on a PC.

WS_FTP

I use CoreFTP lite.

Then switch to FileZilla.

I used to use WS_Ftp and it's good stuff. I now use Ace FTP, which is even better. I tried FileZilla after a few people recommended it, but it crashed a few times, overwrote the wrong files once, and deleted a file in a completely different folder once, which none of the other FTP programs I've used ever had, so I binned it.

Not free, but very nice: WebDrive.

It will map an FTP site as a network drive, so you can read/write directly to your FTP site from within any program on your computer. You can map multiple drive letters to multiple sites, etc.

Uploading a file becomes as easy as saving or copying it to your F:\ drive or something.

What I like about WS_FTP, is you load it up and it prompts you immediately to pick a profile (I have quite a lot) and then just connects. Plus I've saved the source and destination folders so no navigation is needed then I simply get on with the transfer. So quick and easy.
